De gerund is zelfstandig naamwoord, onderwerp van de zin of 
volgt op een voorzetsel of een aantal specifieke werkwoorden…
De gerund is een werkwoord met –ing erachter geschreven. Vaak 
als onderwerp van een zin: 
Smoking is not allowed. Roken is verboden. 
Watching tv is all I do. Tv-kijken is alles wat ik doe.
Als regel komt de gerund ook na de werkwoorden: 
to avoid, to enjoy, to fancy, to finish, to give, to go on, to keep, 
to mind, to quit en to suggest. 
Would you mind telling me what’s happening? (to tell) 
Do you fancy going to the cinema tonight? (to go) 
Meestal ook na de werkwoorden: to stop, to like, to love en to 
hate. 
I love doing my homework in the weekend. (to do) 
She stopped studying when she had her first baby (to study)
 He left without paying. Hij vertrok zonder te betalen. 
 I see no point in investing. Ik zie geen nut in investeren. 
 She is good at giving presentations

De gerund wordt ook gebruikt na de uitdrukkingen: 
It’s no good… =Het heeft geen zin… 
It’s no use… =Het heeft geen zin… 
Can’t/couldn’t help… =moeten… 
Can’t/couldn’t stand… =kan er niet tegen… 
It’s no good complaining. 
It’s no use waiting for it to happen. 
We can’t help laughing about it. 
They couldn’t stand seeing us celebrate our victory.
