- Open Source Software is everywhere, and in lots of different devices – BR players, applications like LibreOffice/OpenOffice, GIMP, Firefox, Chrome, most all e-readers, navigation units, Stanley & LHC at CERN. Smartphones running Android. Google Yahoo Wikipedia all run Linux Roughly 92% of the WORLD'S Supercomputers run Linux & OSS
- Hardware can get expensive quickly, especially in a niche industry. $15,000,000 machine replacement vs. keeping 25-year-old tech running! Linux and other open source software often runs very well on old 486 PCs. Security by obscurity is not a valid argument since most viruses now target application flaws. Lots of European & Asian governments have switched to open source, as well as NASA, the EPA and HUD http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/60780
- I can only speak to Integrated Library Systems Software (ILS) as that's what I do daily. I would suspect that the pricing models are similar across many industries.
