To Whom It May Concern,
It is with pleasure that I write this letter of reference for Geoffrey Campbell. As Geoff’s immediate
supervisor during his 2007 Summer Internship at The Hotspot Community Resource Centre, I
had a significant amount of time to observe his character, work ethic and leadership qualities
which made him one of the most hard working and responsible interns we have ever had.
I first met Geoff as a client of our Community Resource Centre when he came in to inquire about
local volunteer opportunities. He had a particular interest in volunteering for the Community
Police Station because he wanted to contribute to the local community while gaining new
experience and skills. My first impression was that he was a very genuine, level-headed youth
who was eager to learn and had much to offer. I immediately encouraged him to apply for our
next round of internships at our Community Resource Centre. The following summer, he started
his internship and instantly confirmed my impressions and quickly began to exceed my
expectations.
I was very impressed with Geoff’s natural leadership ability. During his internship, part of his
duties was to facilitate weeklong computer camps in which he taught children and youth multi-
media software applications. The role of a facilitator and leader seem to come very easily to him.
I particularly noticed that the children responded well to his friendly, jovial and patient demeanour
and they clearly looked up to him. He also demonstrated his leadership qualities by taking
initiative to advocate Internet Safety to the camp’s participants. He believed that it was an
important issue for young generations to be aware of so, upon receiving my permission, he found
resources about Internet Safety and put together a presentation which he did at the beginning of
each computer camp to make sure that the kids knew the importance of Internet safety, and how
to be safe online.
This desire to make a difference and show of initiative is just one example of Geoff’s admirable
work ethic. In addition to having a strong sense of responsibility, Geoff cares deeply about the
work he undertakes and consistently puts forward his maximum strengths and capabilities in
every task. At the same time, his desire to learn and improve is ever present. He responds
remarkably well to feedback and makes a conscious effort to develop his skills. Early in his
internship Geoff quickly demonstrated that he could be trusted with important projects and set an
unprecedented example to the other Youth Interns by being so honestly dedicated to his work and
consistently staying on task. Geoff even took initiative to delegate tasks to his co-interns, and
also assisted them by sharing his skills and knowledge as needed. The fact that these co-interns
received him well and happily followed his advice and suggestions also attest to his inherent
leadership qualities.
There is more that I could say about Geoff but I think I summarized my impressions well in his
final evaluation, in which I wrote:
“Geoff is one of the best interns we’ve ever had. His passion for the work, dedication to tasks,
desire to learn, eagerness to take initiative, quality of work and desire to do well are exceptional.
We hope that he got as much out of the Internship as we got out of him.”
Please contact me if you have any questions regarding Geoff and his experience with us here at
The Hotspot. I would be very happy to answer questions and share more of my thoughts and
impressions of his admirable character.
