MISSION STATEMENT
The LGBT Resource Center at UCSF, a division of the Office of Diversity and
Outreach, provides information, education, support, and advocacy services to our
campus community. We work toward creating and maintaining a safe, inclusive, and
equitable environment for LGBTQQI students, staff, faculty, post-docs, residents,
fellows, alumni and patients. The Center aims to sustain visibility and a sense of
community throughout the campus and medical center. We are committed to
building workplace equity, promoting student and staff leadership, and providing
high quality, culturally sensitive care to our patients.

2. STUDYING AND WORKING ABROAD
Many students, staff, faculty, and trainees regard
working and studying abroad as one of the most
rewarding experiences of their professional
careers. However, there is great variance in cultural
attitudes towards people who are LGBT, or
perceived to be LGBT. In collaboration with UCSF
Global Health Sciences, The LGBT Resource
Center provides this guide with web links to help
you navigate through the process. As each
individual’s needs are unique, we encourage you to
talk to your school, department, or program
regarding specific policies related to international
travel.
As we know, attitudes toward lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender issues vary from country to
country, and even within the United States.
Because of this, it is important to be aware of the
issues related to sexuality and gender in other
countries. Take the time to learn:
-Support resources and emergency contacts in
your host country, as well as support back at
home.
-Current laws of the host country and how this may
impact “coming out”.
-Local attitudes toward Americans, tourists, sexual
orientations and gender identities.
-Gender roles and social expectations in the host
country. How may this impact my gender identity/
expression?
All traveler’s on behalf of UCSF should register for the free travel
health insurance and extraction service, providing 24 hour access to
help worldwide.
