The Advertising Standards Authority [ASA] has censured national radio station
'Talksport' for posting fake blogs on football internet sites to promote listening
to the station.
The blogs started: "Fellas, Have you heard what talksport radio are doing this
season. They are recruiting a fan from every club in the premiership and
football league, 92 fans in total who will become the voice for their club on their
station…..”
A reader complained to the ASA that it was unclear that the blog was an
advertisement placed by the station. In its defence, Talksport claimed that a
member of staff had acted independently of the radio station in placing the
postings. It apologised, but the ASA concluded that Talksport had breached
two relevant advertising codes and reminded the station that “marketing
communications should be designed and presented in such a way that it was
clear that they were marketing communications.”
