1. Goal of Slide: Highlight top cloud barriers and how NetApp can help.Key Points:When planning the move to cloud computing, there are many business and technology challenges. These are just a few of the top barriers that we hear from our customers:Cloud Barriers: Over time, many organizations end up with multiple hardware architectures for various reasons, such as organic growth, mergers, and acquisitions. This makes it difficult to make changes and implement advanced or new technologies without ripping and replacing entire infrastructures. Multiple hardware architectures typically lead to multiple management interfaces and a lack of one single pane of glass for managing IT resources, making management extremely complex.Almost every IT department has multiple vendor products for storage, servers, etc. That is the reality. But what many vendors would like you to believe is that they can provide you with a full-stack, end-to-end cloud solution. But behind that claim, the truth is that no single vendor can realistically provide the best-of-the-best technologies throughout the stack for the cloud.Cloud computing has very quickly moved from industry hype to a top IT initiative for CIOs. What hasn’t caught up is the availability of real cloud solutions from some vendors who are still just talking about cloud but not providing practical ways to achieve the transition to cloud computing. We think that NetApp is uniquely positioned to help companies overcome these barriers to evolve their virtualized shared IT infrastructure to a cloud computing model. Why NetApp: Single future-ready architecture. We offer a comprehensive set of capabilities for storage and data management all within one Unified Storage Architecture, based on the Data ONTAP operating environment. With our industry-leading unified architecture you can evolve your IT infrastructure to an IT as a service model, you don’t have to rip and replace. Management. NetApp offers a suite of management products for automated, consistent, repeatable NetApp storage provisioning and management. We have adopted an open management strategy that supports third-party integrations with NetApp management tools, enabling you to manage your storage from the same console and tools used to manage your other devices and providing a true end-to-end cloud management solution. Partner ecosystem. We’ve cultivated a vendor-neutral approach and a global ecosystem of best-of-breed partners to help you on your path to the cloud, including cloud management, cloud infrastructure, cloud system integrators, and cloud services providers. Field-proven, practical implementations. We’ve helped many industry-leading enterprises and service providers evolve to a service delivery model using our storage solutions as the foundation for their clouds. Based on our experience, we’ve identified four fundamental elements that should be incorporated in a private cloud solution: service catalog, service analytics, automation, and self-service.
2. Already, more than 1 billion consumers receive cloud services built on a NetApp foundation. If you add up the number of people using cloud services that are running on NetApp today, the number exceeds a billion users:Yahoo! e-mail:300 million active accountsLeading music download service:100-200 million usersWorld’s fastest-growing social media site: 200 million active usersNavitaire:290 million reservations/monthPhotobucket :46 million usersFrance Telecom:1.3 million e-mail accountsAnd we’re not even counting users of:SAP by design Oracle on DemandIntuit Quickbase RackspaceIntuit apps Azaleos“Music” backup” Iron Mtn DigitalCSC Perot Systems BackupEDS Connected T-SystemsBT Joyent AT&TCSC IBM HostingUnisys Telstra* on their internal private cloudSprint* and their internal private cloud BMW* internal private cloudSiemens* internal private cloudOracle on Demand
3. Goal of Slide: Make the point that IT leaders are exploring private and public cloud options, and NetApp can help with both. Key Points:CIOs across the board are being asked to embrace the service provider model or transform their own operations to match the responsiveness and the economics of external cloud services. We believe that organizations that make the decision to fundamentally rethink and re-architect their business systems infrastructure and approach will be tomorrow’s winners because of the competitive advantage they’ll gain. They will think and choose differently today, making future-looking decisions using future-ready criteria rather than continue the approaches from the past. For many IT organizations around the world the question is not “If they’re going to move to cloud computing,” it’s “how?” NetApp can help enterprises wanting to build a private cloud, utilize cloud services from service providers, or both. With a portfolio of private and public cloud solutions and a partner ecosystem, enterprises can depend on NetApp to provide a best of breed solution.
4. Goal of Slide: Discuss the transition happening in the industry from App Silos to Cloud Computing. Key Points:What's dominant in our discussions with IT organizations today is the application silo model on the left hand side. This has been the primary provisioning model for servers and storage, up until the last few years. The application-based design approach started with the application and a dedicated infrastructure under it: services and storage carved out just for that application and its users. Typically these silos are independent of each other; many times there were separate choices made about servers and storage between the different silos. Specialized skills were required for each silo, and often organizations were set up around each tier of service, with dedicated SAN teams, or NAS teams, or Tier 1, tier 2, etc. To get a new application rolled out, the first step was to purchase and stand up new hardware and infrastructure, and it would often take months just to get the infrastructure ready to put a new application into production. Once rolled out, it was hard to share resources. Stranded excess capacity and horsepower in one silo couldn’t be reallocated to another application that was growing, or repurposed to roll out a new application. But server virtualization is changing that and paving the way for a completely different architecture where a single pool of resources can be shared across multiple clients. Server virtualization has a compelling value proposition, and a profound implication. The value proposition is simple: most servers are underutilized. If you could run multiple apps on the same server, you can reduce your server footprint, drive up utilization, and save a lot of money and manpower. Virtualization allowed a decoupling of the application from the hardware. Applications became mobile and can moved from server to server for load balancing, moved from data center to data center for disaster recovery, and moved into the cloud and back out of the cloud for capacity bursting, flexibility, and cost. IT organizations can build a broad, homogeneous, horizontal server infrastructure that's capable of running multiple applications simultaneously. And server virtualization broke the cycle of having to stand up new hardware in order to deploy new applications. You can flow the resources to the demand. You have tremendous flexibility to move your applications around and you can drive a degree of standardization. Now as customers are moving towards higher degrees of virtualization the reality of maximizing the sharing across a common infrastructure and adding automation as well as Self-Service lends itself to what is now called Cloud. Be it a Private Cloud built by an enterprise to run their ITaaS, or leveraging Public Cloud offerings to complement standard and/or modernized IT infrastructure the goal is the same…lowering IT costs and gaining operational efficiencies that allow IT to respond to the business with a flexible IT infrastructure. Hybrid Cloud is also a goal of the future with some early adopters already linking their Private Clouds to Public Cloud services. We believe these models will coexist for years, but the bottom line is, the application-based silos are ultimately going to get relegated to legacy applications that will never be migrated, or the small set of key applications in the data center that people believe still warrant their own dedicated infrastructure. The vast majority of the storage and the vast majority of the applications are going to move to the shared infrastructure over time.
5. Goal of Slide: Highlight that a cloud computing strategy must start with evaluating your applications.Key Points: This 2 by 2 model illustrates NetApp’s methodology to define your Data Center strategy to be inclusive of all aspects of your workloads or IT applications. This would range from Application Silos, Zones of Virtualization, and both Private and Public Cloud. The main point is that your strategy should be based on the lifecycle of the workloads and your goals for those workloads (the goals may change over time). On the X axis we are illustrating the strategic value of applications, where the further out they are the more strategic they are. Usually the more strategic they are the more likely they’d be kept in-house. On the Y axis we are illustrating operational flexibility, where the further up they are the more flexibility is desired; which would lend itself to more use of Cloud on the top, by definition Cloud providing the maximum flexibility.Lower strategic value, higher flexibility would be likely candidates for Public Cloud, but this is not a steadfast rule. Some SaaS applications are highly strategic.Lower strategic value, lower flexibility is a high candidate for virtualization and is what started the initial popularity of virtualizing all infrastructure apps.Higher strategic value, higher flexibility would potentially make an argument for building a Private Cloud to keep in house and obtain all the benefits of Cloud.Higher strategic value, lower flexibility is likely more of a discussion around keeping something as-is (silo?), or perhaps a candidate for virtualization, but no need for a Cloud if it does not require the flexibility. These are guidelines and not steadfast rules. Different customers will feel differently about various workloads. And, different workloads may have an evolution over time where they move to virtualization in one phase and then become a candidate for Cloud later in life.
6. Goal of Slide: Point out that where you move your applications will be based on business needs.Key Points: These are some typical examples of what may be in the different areas of the 2 x 2 model. CRM is a very popular workload offered by Public Cloud providers, Dev/Test is quite often used in Private Clouds if IT is electing to build a Cloud (often a Public Cloud if no such Private Cloud is built). IT Applications of various levels of criticality are often virtualized, initially infrastructure applications and increasingly mission critical applications. Finally, custom applications either based on legacy architecture that are of high strategic value or newer applications with specific requirements that are unique to the silo are often found as silos. Each category has some characterizations that are prevalent, but again, each customer may have their own view that slightly differs and these should be considered generalities.
7. Goal of Slide: Transition to a discussion on how NetApp can help customers build a private cloud.Key Points:
8. Goal of Slide: Make the point of NetApp’s unique technologies that provide the storage foundation for the cloud.Key Points:A service-oriented infrastructure pools all resources (storage, network, and compute) to create a shared IT infrastructure that is elastic, efficient, and dynamic. It is the architectural design that is needed to deliver IT as a service. NetApp’s storage and data management technology capabilities are built on the Data ONTAP platform, which is the foundation of the NetApp Unified Storage Architecture and provides these key capabilities that are critical to private cloud computing: Storage efficiency through a single unified storage architecture and management interface that supports multiple protocols and multi-vendor arrays with our technologies that are inherent in the NetApp Data ONTAP operating system for improving storage efficiency, such as thin provisioning, deduplication, cloning, and Snapshot copies. Scale up and scale out means having the elastic scalability to scale up, out or down to meet the dynamic demand of a shared IT infrastructure that is delivering IT as a service Non-stop operations so you can move data to balance workloads or other requirements because planned timedown is impossible in a shared infrastructure. Data Motion allows you to easily and quickly migrate and move data across multiple storage systems without disrupting users or applications that are accessing that data. Maintenance, hardware, and software upgrades and technology refreshes can be conveniently performed by moving all data off a storage sysem, performing the desired activity, and then moving the data back. Secure multi tenancy to cost-effectively and securely partition a single NetApp system to support multiple tenants with MultiStore, combined in an SMT architecture with Cisco and Vmware to segment, isolate, and deliver shared server, storage, and network resources to different users, groups, departments or applications. Service automation and analytics for automated storage provisioning, comprehensive visibility, monitoring, and proactive alerts of availability, performance and policy compliance.
9. Goal of Slide: Establish NetApp’s approach for enabling the path to private cloud. Key Points: This slide has a number of important points. First, the foundation on the bottom right is the shared IT infrastructure that NetApp has built upon for quite some time…all the points about ONTAP, our unified storage, our story around virtualization could all be leveraged in a longer presentation. But how do you get from a heavily virtualized environment to that of a Private Cloud? Even an 80% virtualized environment is not yet a Cloud. This is NetApp’s approach to get there, with practical guidance and experience. There are requirements in making your IT services-based, which is what separates a Cloud from virtualization. While these are not literal steps one must do in order, or that one would have to do all four, we’d start with the need to define the services that will actually exist in the Cloud. Optimizing your service delivery is all about the ability to monitor, manage, chargeback (or show-back) and deliver the service levels required by your end-users. You want to rapidly deploy and redeploy services, rapidly responding to the business. Finally, the end goal would be to empower IT to focus on strategic issues (not end-user tactical requests) and empower end-users to immediately use the infrastructure they require. These match up 1:1 with the build. The Service Catalog is how services IT creates are expressed to the end-users. Service Analytics allows the optimization of service delivery. Automation is the means for rapid and reliable deployment. Self-Service is what empowers both IT and the end-users, should an enterprise take their Private Cloud this far. This also is a forward reference to how our OnCommand software provides Cloud management capabilities and also integrates with other partners to complete the stack.
10. This slide and the next 3 highlight how OnCommand delivers on the 4 fundamental elements we have defined in building Clouds. Each slide describes the element on the right, explains OnCommand key differentiation on the top left and gives a customer proof point on the bottom left.Goal of Slide: Highlight how defining a service catalog is key to optimizing service delivery.Key Points: The new OnCommand unified manager integrates provisioning, protection, and services cataloq into a single integrated tool that is included with the purchase of all NetApp storage systems (OnCommand unified manager is part of Data ONTAP Essentials).Moving to a services model is more than introduction of technology. It requires that you understand your customer requirements and define a set of services that can meet them. You should think of defining your services in terms of the quality of service each provides. The OnCommand services catalog allows you to specify service policy attributes such as efficiency with the application of thin provisioning and deduplication, performance tier attributes, availability by type of RAID and protection policies for frequency of back-ups and DR .Service Catalog represents a key NetApp differentiator that enables integration of storage provisioning policies, data protection policies, and storage resource pools into a single service offering that administrators can choose when provisioning storage. This not only automates much of the provisioning process but also automates a variety of storage management tasks associated with the policies. One of the most important reasons for moving to a services model is that it sets the framework for enabling automation. Automation reduces errors often introduced with manual processes and reduces the time it takes to provision and protect your data. As illustrated, a government service provider was able to reduce provisioning times from 6 months to a day greatly improving uptime. These types of saving are quite common among customers that adopt a services model.
11. Goal of Slide: Highlight how service analytics plays a role in optimizing service delivery. Key Points: Featured in the Cloud launch is NetApp’s new analytic capability OnCommand Insight. OnCommand Insight combines SANscreen and AkorriBalancePoint into a single offering within the OnCommand product family.Service analytics are essential to implementing a services model and private Cloud. You need to have visibility into your end to end infrastructure in order to understand how you are delivering on your services and to diagnose performance and capacity problems. Virtualization, the foundation for moving to private cloud, offers the flexibility to easily create new application instances and provision storage but that flexibility also introduces considerable complexity in keeping track of how your resources are deployed and where and why performance bottlenecks are occurring. Without good analytics it can take hour s and even days to pin point the real cause.Additionally analytics provide the insight into how your infrastructure is being used in order to inform the users of your service the costs they are incurring. Even if you don’t implement a full chargeback system giving your users insight into the services they use and the associated cost (show back) can dramatically change behaviors such a choosing lower level, less costly services when appropriate.Only OnCommand Insight offers actionable knowledge through the use of sophisticated analytics to enable you to optimize your shared IT infrastructure. A large multinational wireless carrier was able to realize multimillion annual capex and opex savings and 1,500% increase in operational efficiency. OnCommand Insight analytics allow you to:Optimize your existing resources Identify misused, underused or orphaned assetsDefine policies and establish best practices Avoid problems and meet service levelsMake better decisions based on real-time data•Resolve problems faster•Accurately plan future purchases•Avoid overspending and defer capital expenditures Accelerate IT initiatives•Better understand virtual environments•Validate changes to facilitate migration and consolidation•Manage risks, minimize downtime and speed cloud deployment
12. Goal of Slide: Highlight how automation is key to rapidly deploying services. Key Points:This fundamental element is supported by NetApp’sOnCommand unified manager. This new product integrates the functions of Provisioning Manager, Protection Manager, Operations Manager, SMVI and SMHV.The user sees a single view, and experiences management with integrated system elements, a unified back-end architecture, and a common configuration repository. OnCommand integrates storage across the IT environment and enables automation for provisioning and protection.OnCommand supports integrations with popular management platforms and with the SnapManager family of products empowers admins to manage and automate the provisioning and protection of their data.OnCommand’s policy based services catalog allow you to move virtual machines within the cloud and automatically have all the policy attributes remain in place for the data.Automation can dramatically reduce the time it takes to provision and protect your data. This gives you much greater flexibility to introduce new services that have substantial business impact as was the case with a leading liability insurer who was able to reduce provisioning times from weeks to minutes and introduce new capabilities within hours.
13. Goal of Slide: Highlight how self-service enables you to empower IT and your end users. Key Points:The simplicity of OnCommand’s API supports integration with applications that can easily provide self-service functionality to end-users. This allows customers to integrate the request for services directly into user workflows. For example, the request to create new mailboxes can automatically provision storage and enable protection based on the level of services defined. This frees up critical IT resources for more critical strategic activities and means that admins can mange more storage without additional resources. As an example, a Disaster Recovery service provider found their implementation of a self-service portal reduced their error rate and customer support resources by 40%.
14. Purpose of the slide: Highlight NetApp partnerships with industry-leading cloud management software providers.Key points: NetApp has an open management strategy that encourages and supports the integration of third-party management products and in-house management tools with NetApp OnCommand™ management software to enable end-to-end cloud management. 18. Purpose of the slide: Transition to how NetApp helps enterprises augment their private cloud with public cloud services.Key points:
19. Purpose of the slide: Highlight NetApp service provider customer examples. Key points:Many companies are already realizing the enhanced flexibility and efficiency of cloud computing by working with NetApp service provider partners. Navallier (a brokerage), Loughborough University and BMW are each using NetApp based cloud services from NetApp partners to drive a range of improvements including: infrastructure and administrative cost savings, faster scalability and better data protection. Loughborough is actually coupling an internal private cloud with infrastructure and dr cloud services from Logicalis. This is an example of hybrid cloud.Navallier – QuestNavellier & Associates is a premier provider of individual and institutional asset management. In a volatile industry where financial services organizations face intense pressure to reduce costs, companies like Navellier put renewed focus on maximizing the returns on capital and operating investments. The company looked to its IT environment for opportunities to reduce costs. Quest deployed a NetApp FAS2020 storage system at Navellier’s headquarters for delivering its Desktop Virtualization service through a cloud-based VMware virtual desktop environment. The system is replicated nightly to a dedicated NetApp FAS3170 storage environment at Quest’s Sacramento disaster recovery site. The company eliminated 26 of 28 physical servers by virtualizing with Quest and NetApp. Since running its onsite and remote virtual desktops on NetApp storage, Navellier applications are running faster and smoother. The customer is also now benefitting from affordable high availability enabled by Quest’s NetApp based data protection services.“Disaster recovery and high availability are expensive propositions for companies such as Navellier,” says President and CEO of Quest Tim Burke. “NetApp SnapMirror and Snapshot technologies allow us to provide data storage, replication, and restoration that cost 60% to 70% less than most alternatives. We can pass along those savings to customers like Navellier.”Loughborough – LogicalisLoughborough University deploys Logicalis’ Cooperative Cloud to cost-effectively meet the long-term capacity demands of its growing research, teaching and enterprise services. As part of a strategic IT partnership, Logicalis will design and build an on-site, bespoke private cloud fully integrated with an off-site, cooperative hosted cloud. This single, scalable architecture will provide unlimited scope for future capacity provisioning and is set to save the University over 640 metric tonnes of CO² per annum and significant cost-savings. Dr Phil Richards, Director of IT at Loughborough University, comments, “Our data centre was built and designed 40 years ago. It has served us well, but is showing its age through a poor PUE (Power Utilisation Efficiency) rating and limited capacity. We were open to innovation from the IT sector to bring us the most cost-effective and creative ways to build a more holistic and scalable IT architecture that would grow with us for the long-term. Loughborough’s on-site cloud is built on enterprise class technology from Cisco, NetApp and CA to create a self-contained, highly virtualised and extremely compact environment. This provides enough compute, storage and network capacity to meet immediate local demand, while long-term future capacity, on-demand burst capacity and disaster recovery capability is provided by the Logicalis Hosted Cloud (Built on NetApp) http://www.uk.logicalis.com/news-and-events/news/loughborough-university.aspxBMW – InteractiveInteractive multi-platform Disaster Recovery Services offer a choice of multi-subscriber or dedicated solutions to support critical systems. Interactive disaster recovery centers offer multiple, fully equipped recovery suites that are available within a maximum of six hours.
