The demand for more work flexibility

Technology
Trends
Workforce trends

Employees report that they are more productive and more engaged in
their work when there are able to balance the demands of work with
other aspects of their lives.

Description :
This trend is most pronounced in technology companies, the sector that has
historically led the way in adoption of new technology and workstyles. This trend
doesn’t impact the workplace directly but have more to do with affecting how we
work.
The physical workplace is far more than just furnishings and real estate, it’s also
about how people work and are managed .
(e.g remote management, telecommuting, proximity center, open spaces, flexitime…)

"Flexibility is about an employee and an employer making changes to when, where and how a person will
work to better meet individual and business needs. Flexibility enables both individual and business needs
to be met through making changes to the time (when), location (where) and manner (how) in which an
employee works. Flexibility should be mutually beneficial to both the employer and employee and result in
superior outcomes."

Keeping employee engaged and motivated is a concern from the
organization’s perspective but also for employees as well. People identify
themselves by their work and network, and still want to engage with others, to
meet and catch up on each others’lives and families.
The question is how and where they will experiment this as more workers work
remotely and rarely meet each others face-to-face.

Generation Y are becoming more career savvy, they know
what they want, they believe they can achieve it and they
are actively planning to do just this. They are optimistic

their confidence slightly they don’t intend on letting it keep
them down. Employers need to consider how they can

Managing work/life and work/family relationships has become an
increasingly important diversity and productivity challenge for
employers. The blurring boundaries between work and personal
life due to technology (e.g., cell phones, the Internet, etc.), the
accessibility of work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and an
increase in the caregiving demands of employees have
contributed to the challenge of balancing work/life demands.

Gamification is about taking the essence of games
– fun, play and passion – and applying it to realworld, non-game situations. In a business
setting, that means designing solutions or
processes using gaming principles in everything
from back-office tasks and training to sales
management and career counseling. This technique
has become increasingly valuable for understanding
which behaviors will drive business outcomes..
80% of current gamified enterprise applications will fail to meet their
objectives, due largely to poor design (Gartner)

Informal Learning : Learning beyond the classroom
A few statistics from Bersin By Deloitte :

Informal learning can be defined as a particular way of
learning which arises from the activities and interests of
individuals and groups. After having identified and selected
interests expressed by learners, informal-learning activities
(discussion, talks or presentations, webcasts, free online
education, information) are carried out in a flexible and informal
way, in informal community locations...

Virtual Workplace

―Some employees no longer see a corporate office at all – those
working in a corporate office at least once a week fell from 100% in
2010 to 89% in 2012, according to Forrester’s 2012 Workforce
Employee Survey. Employees working at home at least once a week
rose from 18% in 2010 to 27% in 2012, while those working in a public
site reached 12% in 2012, up from 5% in 2010.‖

For many employers the virtual workplace, in which employees operate
remotely from each other and from managers, is a reality now, and all
indications are that it will become even more prevalent in the future. In
and of itself, this represents an important change in how we work, and it
presents new challenges...
It saves time, travel expenses, and eliminates lack of access to experts ,
but balancing e-mail, voice mail, video conferencing, and face-to-face
communications is becoming crucial to succeed in this environment.

A Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is an online course
aiming at large-scale interactive participation and open
access via the web. In addition to traditional course
materials such as videos, readings, and problem
sets, MOOCs provide interactive user forums that help build
a community for the students, professors, and teaching
assistants. While SPOC is Small Private Online Course…

Harvard, one of the world's most influential universities, is moving on to Spocs - which stands for small private online
courses. MOOCs seem to be being superceded by SPOCs (Small Private Online Courses). The MOOC approach is
fine but has a very high attrition rate - very few students complete the course. The idea behind the SPOC is that it
uses the same technology approaches to delivery but because it is more focussed (targetted) the attrition rate is much
lower and so more effective at delivering the end result.

Crowdsourcing is a term meaning work being done by a
"crowd" of people, with the crowd generally being the public at

In essence, crowdsourcing is any sort of outsourcing that
involves a large group of people actively participating in a
project. Generally, this is the public, but a business might also
utilize crowdsourcing techniques to develop an internal
application or fix a business issue.

MOOCs seem to be being superceded by SPOCs (Small Private Online Courses). The MOOC approach is fine but has a very high attrition rate - very few students complete the course. The idea behind the SPOC is that it uses the same technology approaches to delivery but because it is more focussed (targetted) the attrition rate is much lower and so more effective at delivering the end result. 28 © 2013 Talent Observatory - Creative Commons Attribution Licence.
