1. What kind of Media
Institutions might
distribute your media
product and why?
The media institution that might distribute my
media product can be Film4. This is because it
doesn’t only work with new talents, it has also
been responsible for supporting a large number if
films made in the United Kingdom. Our film is
very like to be classed as a ‘British Film’, so Film4
can be the best choice.
The best example of a film succeeding is Marc Price’s ‘Colin’ film. His
film was screened at the Abertoir horror film festival in Wales, and was
taken to Cannes. Later on, a distribution deal was made for the film to
be released nationwide.
There are other ways to market a film such as advertising the film itself
using the media (such as TV, social networking, posters)
2. In what way does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions
of real media products?
The title itself demonstrates a horrific genre. “The halls have eyes” was
inspired from the film “The hills have eyes” because eyes can be a very scary
feature, it can be scary seeing something, or even scarier not to see something.
The music for the opening titles is parallel because it goes along well with the
music and increases the mysterious atmosphere, leaving the audience confused.
The main colours used are dull, other than red white and black. White is
usually associated with pureness and fine. Black on the other hand is seen to be
wicked and scary. In addition, red is most associated with danger, and these
colours conflict with each other causing a clash within them.
The influential film openings
were mainly “To kill a
mockingbird” because of its
mysteriousness. We analysed
different films that were based on
the horror-genre, and a couple
that were not.
3. Inspirational films
“Psycho”
“Psycho” is a well-known
horror film.
- The film and the music is
parallel, and so is ours.
- The director is also well-
known, so has priority in the
film, and therefore can be seen
as a big pleasure for the
audience. Our film is more
independent and can be seen as a
new and established talent.
- “Psycho” has less camera
shooting, and more titles, for
example cast starring and roles.
4. How does your media
product represent particular
social groups?
Our group represents the young adults, or
teenagers as dangerous. We tried to show
that teenagers throughout years have
always had a bad impression. The way in
which our group shows this in the film is
because 100 years ago there were also cult
members who exist at the present time. On
the other hand, our film also challenges the
stereotypical gender roles within society as
the cult members all females. Men are seen
as more dominant and more powerful, but
that contrasts with our film. Although
now men and women have equal rights, our
film show women as more superior. This
also confronts the genre of the film, horror
because women are not ‘meant’ to be scary,
instead as they are stereotypically
emotionally weak, they have usually been
portrayed as victims.
