2. WHAT IS RESEARCH?
Research is the act of collecting information about a certain topic to find
out more about it and to use the information in things such as
presentations, book and films among other informative pieces.
Researching can vary from using anonymous surveys to interviewing
various people or even searching the internet.
3. HOW TO CONDUCT RESEARCH.
There are various ways to carry out research. These can include
looking through books, searching the internet, watching
documentaries relating to the subject being researched or asking
the different people through either surveys or interviewing.
4. QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
Quantitative Research is numerical research using figures and
diagrams such as graphs and charts. The data collected via
Quantitative Research is typically put into categories, rank order
or measurements.
5. QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
Qualitative Research is written research that is usually based on
interviewing people and recording their opinions. Qualitative
Research can be carried out via interviews, surveys or focus
groups.
6. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY
RESEARCH
Primary Research is conducting research of your own via
Qualitative Research such as interviews/surveys and Quantitative
Research such as collecting data and putting in graphs or
figures.
Secondary Research is using someone else’s work to add to your
own such as borrowing information from books, the internet or
documentaries.
7. BIBLIOGRAPHY
A Bibliography is a list of documents used in the research being
conducted. These can include Books, Websites and
documentaries or films, etc. In a bibliography you have to
include the book/webpage title, author and the year it was
published.
8. FILM SURVEY
What is your preferred genre of film?
Who are your favourite actors?
Any preferred directors?
How long do the films you watch usually tend to last?
How often do you go to the cinema?
9. QUESTIONS
What is meant by technical codes? The way text, camera angles,
etc are constructed.
Why is representation an important part of factual programming?
It provides information on the programme.
Define ‘genre’. Different categories of film and other forms of
media.
What is ideology? The ideas and manners of a social group or
culture.
10. ONLINE RESEARCH OR BOOKS?
Internet research is quicker, more efficient and you can
generalise your search to get more results.
Print research tends to take longer, however it is more reliable
than the internet where anyone has access to publishing things.
Printed documents are usually written by an expert on the
subject where as with online, pretty much anyone is able to
publish information.
A more reliable source of information would be printed research
due to the fact that you are guaranteed to know who wrote it
and there will always be some information on when and who the
book was published by.
11. RESEARCH PROPOSAL
For my research proposal, I am going to use qualitative research as I feel printed research is more
insightful and useful than quantitative research. This is because numerical figures don’t tell you as
much as written text information. Things such diary accounts or open ended questionnaires tend to
be more helpful than surveys, as you can get the opinion of the person you’re interviewing in depth.
The types of primary research I would use would be to visit a cinema and interview a small number of
people about their opinions on films they have just seen, and what they usually like to see in the films
they watch. An example of a few questions I would ask would be:
What is your preferred genre of film?
Who are your favourite actors?
Any preferred directors?
How long do the films you watch usually tend to last?
How often do you go to the cinema?
Focus groups would be ideal, as you can get a group of people together and ask them what their
opinions on a film or films in an open discussion, meaning the participants are completely entitled to
voice their own opinion freely.
12. USING PRIMARY RESEARCH
A way in which I will be using primary research is creating a
questionnaire asking people various questions about their
opinions of different aspects of films such as preferred genres,
actors and directors
13. QUESTIONNAIRE FOR PRIMARY
RESEARCH

For my primary research, I will make a questionnaire asking for people’s:
14. SECONDARY RESEARCH
From visiting IMDB, I discovered that the 10 most popular films this year so far are:
1. This Is The End
2. Insidious: Chapter 2
3. Rush
4. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
5. Riddick
6. Prisoners
7. Now You See Me
8. World War Z
9. Don Jon
10. Star Trek: Into Darkness
Two Sci-Fi films (Riddick and Star Trek) and three thrillers (Prisoners, Rush and Now
You See Me) are on the list of the Top 10 most popular films, this is beneficial as I
am making a Sci-Fi/Thriller with a Post Apocalyptic vibe ( much like Riddick)
15. PITCH
I’ll be making a Sci-Fi film as it came up as the most popular. It will be directed by James
Cameron as he is an extremely popular director and is experienced at making Sci-Fi films.
The name of my film is ‘Hourglass’ as it represents time running out, which relates to the plot
of my film.
The film will cast Leonardo Dicaprio ( Who has worked with Tarantino in last year’s
blockbuster, Django Unchained) and Robert Downey Junior as they are household names
and will draw people to see the film. The film will also cast Emma Stone and Judy Dench
with Whoopi Goldberg as a cameo for humorous effect.
The budget will be $200 million so it can meet the CGI demands of a Sci-Fi film and to meet
the salary of the high profile cast.
The budget of Dicaprio’s last film (Django Unchained) was estimated to be around
$100,000,000 and grossed $162,804,648. The budget of Downey Jr’s last film (Iron Man 3)
was $200,000,000 and it grossed $408,992,272.
16. PITCH CONTINUED
‘Hourglass’ is scheduled to be released in January 2015, as there is
very little competition in that month.
Only three other films are being released in January (SpongeBob
Squarepants 2, The Longest Ride and The Wedding Ringer). None of
which attract the same target audience as my film as two of them
are Romantic comedies (The Longest Ride and The Wedding Ringer),
while SpongeBob Squarepants 2 is a children’s film.
The certificate of ‘Hourglass’ will probably be a 15 or 18 due to
scenes that may be considered too violent for younger audiences
and slightly more mature and adult themes than your average 12a
rated film.
‘Hourglass’ is likely to be 2 hours in length to fit in both the backstory
and Action-heavy scenes.
17. PITCH CONTINUED (PLOT)
‘Hourglass’ will be set 100 years in the future with natural resources
running out due to climate change. Militant gangs take control of
San Francisco and fight for resources. Leonardo Dicaprio plays the
mayor of San Francisco and is trying to get the city back on track
after a recent earthquake while the barbaric gangs that are plaguing
dystopian America unleash havoc. Robert Downey plays a nihilistic,
drug addicted ex cop who makes the decision to join one of the
militant groups For his own safety (and thirst for power) and goes up
against the mayor in a intense battle for control of San Francisco. The
Mayor organises an elite SWAT team to flush out the opposition using
high tech weaponry and advanced military tactics. Judy Dench
plays the tactical adviser for the mayor but has emotional barriers
due to the recent death of her husband and her daughter’s (played
by Emma Stone) job as a prostitute, not to mention the chaos and
post apocalyptic atmosphere of the city she is living in.
18. SOCIAL NETWORKING
I will use Social Media as a marketing tool as it is extremely
effective and is a current trend in the entertainment industry .
An increasing number of people create Twitter accounts
everyday and the use of ‘Hashtags’ enable things to trend
worldwide. An official Twitter account will be made for the film
and will tweet updates release dates, cast, related media such
as video games and film soundtrack among other details relating
to the film.
An official YouTube account will also be used to upload Trailers,
interviews and other videos related to the film to generate
interest in the film.
