Theme: Possess the land
Sermon: Authority for possessing
Text: Luke 10:19 (NIV)
‘“I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.”’
Introduction
Authority is needed for legitimate possessing. Taking possession of something without legitimate authority is called ‘stealing’.
Believers in Christ need to know that they have authentic authority.
I trust God will use this message to help you know your true authority in order to possess all of His promises.
In the same way Jesus assured His disciples of their authority, He wants us to be confident in ours.
Main points
The basis of godly authority
True godly authority comes through position and by delegation.
As believers in Christ we are positioned in heavenly places. This is our basis for authority.
‘… and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus …’
Ephesians 2:6 (NKJV)
We have access to our Father’s throne of grace.
‘Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.’
Hebrews 4:16 (NKJV)
He has qualified us to have ownership (Colossians 1:12) and given us land to possess (Deuteronomy 1:8)
The foundation of our authority is the knowledge that God is our Father and that we have been adopted as His own children. To be able to say ‘Our Father ...’ is an immense statement and confirmation of godly authority. Becoming a true believer puts you in a position of spiritual authority.
‘Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God …’
John 1:12 (NIV)
It is clear from Scripture that spiritual authority is delegated to the believer:
‘Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go …”’
Matthew 28:18-19 (NIV)
All authority in heaven and earth was given to Jesus, and He can legitimately give it to believers. He sends you on an assignment to possess by His authority.
Don’t doubt – believe!
Authority is delegated by and through the Name of Jesus. There is great power and authority in His Name and He gives believers the right to use it.
‘Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.’
Philippians 2:9-11 (NIV)
No name is more powerful. Demons and the devil tremble at His Name when spoken in faith by even the most timid little believer!
2. The use of spiritual authority
The authority God gives must be exercised whenever spiritual power or His promises are disputed.
In other words, where enemy activity or evil is present. It is also used in disputes over claims of possession. Godly authority is required to deal with circumstances contradicting or endangering God’s purposes. Jesus calming the storm on the Sea of Galilee is a good example.
It is further given to deal with the threat and destructive power of the enemy.
Don’t use your badge, blue lights and siren (signs of authority) to show off or take advantage. Rather use your authority as God’s ambassador for the purpose of advancing His Kingdom in this world.
Godly authority is for the purpose of edification (building up) not for destruction (breaking down).
3. How to use it
Make sure you understand the difference between power and authority (think of drivers yielding to a traffic officer because of his authority and not his physical power).
Think of drivers yielding to a traffic officer because of his authority and not his physical power.
Faith in Christ’s authority is required to release it through us. Faith and authority work closely together. The account where Jesus heals the Roman centurion’s servant clearly illustrates this:
‘Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him, saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented.” And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.” The centurion answered and said, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel! And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed that same hour.’ (Emphasis added)
Matthew 8:5-13 (NKJV)
Let’s use our spiritual authority by using the Name of Jesus (showing of badge) in faith. To carry power, this must be backed by a Kingdom lifestyle!
We should know the level of our spiritual authority.
Think of a young cock crowing for the first time. In the spiritual realm, authority has to do with the level of maturity and character in the spirit.
We should stay and operate within our sphere of authority. Casualties arise when people attempt to operate outside of their God-given authority.
Authority in the spirit is based in humility. It is not based on paper, but in a relationship with Jesus.
Discernment is crucial in using our spiritual authority and is subject to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Let the Holy Spirit lead you to choose your battles. Soldiers and police officials are rarely given carte blanche (do as you wish) when it comes to exercising authority. It is limited and directed by the constitution and laws of the country as well as their superiors. The same applies to believers in Christ. Using our spiritual authority can never look like a scene from a cowboy movie. It should be used under the direction of the Holy Spirit who gives the discernment for its application.
The vital parts of authentic spiritual authority are:
The Name of Jesus Christ
Faith in Christ’s authority
Humility
A personal connection with Jesus
Discernment
4. The power of God’s authority
From our position of humility, God wants us to be confident and bold when it comes to using the authority He gives us. God’s authority releases awesome power!
Take note of the authority in the lives of the following Bible characters:
The prophet Jeremiah’s God-given authority over nations.
‘“See, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms,
To root out and to pull down,
To destroy and to throw down,
To build and to plant.”’
Jeremiah 1:10 (NKJV)
David’s confidence in God’s authority when he faced the giant, Goliath.
‘Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.”’
1 Samuel 17:45-47 (NKJV)
Application
Don’t just look at godly authority and marvel about it – take it up and use it!
It is the same as becoming a skilled sword fighter – the more you use it, the better you will get at it.
If you want to possess, take up your God-given authority.
When facing intimidation or threat from the enemy, fear or contradicting circumstances, take up your authority and say, ‘Peace!’
Deal with the snakes and scorpions of danger and threat by God’s authority. Deal with enemy opposition to your possessing by God’s authority. Overcome to possess the land by God’s authority. He says to you, ‘I have given you My authority.’
