  • 3. Letter from the Minister Dear Friends What a joy to be celebrating Christmas again. The time when we remind ourselves of the wonder of that Christmas morning so many years ago, as the birth of our Saviour hit the ‘headlines’ of the evening skies to those shepherds expecting nothing more than yet another night of bleating sheep! You can quite understand the disbelief of those who heard the shepherds’ story that night, wondering if perhaps a little strong drink had aided or befuddled their memories. But, as always, there was more than one shepherd, more than one witness to the events, more than one to tell the story – and so the event is recorded. Nowadays we would want photographic evidence, a video plus soundtrack, a ‘U Tube’ download at the very least, and still we would presume someone was pulling our legs… How jaded we have become. We have lost our awe and wonder in this technological age; we seem to have lost the ability to be spiritually moved by the presence and symbol of our God; we are too involved in our own lives and needs and wants to give much time to the God of the Bible, the God of our lives. As we approach the celebration that reminds us of the birth of a small child, one given to change the world, let us try to grasp some of that awe and wonder as we again listen to the Bible stories that explain just how special this small child would be to our world. It is nothing short of miraculous that the birth of one child in the middle of a busy city would be able to change millions of lives over two millennia of time – miraculous that still today we remember not just the child, but what he said and did throughout his life, and how he died for us on that cross that we might have life in all its fullness… So as we begin the celebrations for the birth of a small child, hold on to the wonder of the story, and be awestruck again this Christmas. For our faith is wonderful, it fills us with joy anew, and so it is right we celebrate together. Sue 1

  • 11. 'Renewal of Commitment to Mission' We will delay our mission no longer. We will live in ways that show those around us the good news of God's love in Jesus. We will demonstrate by our actions as well as by our words how much God longs for the healing and wholeness of the world. We will build one another up in love, so that those who encounter our common life will find in our sharing a foretaste of God's kingdom on earth. Amen Wedding Blessing The couple are Matthew and Donniece Smith. They were married in the church on 7th November 2009 and every year around their anniversary they come back for a blessing. They are a lovely, lovely couple. 9

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE put your cards in alphabetical (surname) order and put an elastic band round them before posting. This will help the PMG. CHRISTMAS CHARITIES It was agreed at the September church meeting that the following charities would benefit:: - CHRISTMAS POST. Contributions in lieu of postage will go to the SPINNAKER TRUST who are a Christian organisation which began in 1986 and supports primary schools with their assemblies and RE lessons. We already support them in Pickhurst Primary School. A school commenting on their Spinnaker visitor said "the children always cheer when she comes in. She makes real life and to-day's childhood link so well to the Bible and Christian teaching". CHRISTMAS DAY. HELP FOR HEROES. Regarding the war in Afghanistan, the media is quick to let us know how many of our Servicemen have been killed, but they do NOT mention about those who are wounded or had limbs amputated. The charity came into being on 1 October 2007 and wanted to raise £5 million. It has already raised £100 million and they say "don't stop now!" Tedworth House in Tidworth, Hampshire is being turned into a Recovery Centre for wounded Servicemen and women. By Spring 2012 they will be able to have 50 residents in superb adapted accommodation. We owe it to our wounded heroes to give them our support. 12
  • 15. Christmas in a Workhouse O n 12th January 1861 the Ripon & Richmond Chronicle [Yorkshire] reported: - "Lady Denys of Draycott Hall [Fremington], with her usual liberality gave a treat of roast beef and plum pudding on Christmas Day, to the inmates of Reeth Union Workhouse, for which they were exceedingly thankful." No doubt this was well received as the normal diet in the Reeth Workhouse was not exactly inspiring nor indeed particularly healthy. Christmas Day 1860 fell on a Tuesday so the fare would otherwise have been: Breakfast - 16oz of oatmeal potage with 3/8 pint of milk; dinner - 16oz of suet pudding with sweet sauce. Supper - 1pt of oatmeal boiled with milk and water plus 7oz bread. Breakfast & supper were the same every day; dinner varied a little with 4.5oz of meat with 1.5lb of potatoes twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays. No other vegetables, tea, coffee or anything else which was not on the approved dietary. Information found at The National Archives, and posted on a Genealogy discussion forum. The way things once were From The Nottinghamshire Almanac for December 1841. A Christmas tale should be clear and succinct, The language plain and incidents well linked; Tell not as new, what everybody knows, That old and young still hasten to a close. From The Nottinghamshire Almanac for January 1841. Sweet then the ploughman’s slumbers hale and young, When the last topic dies upon his tongue; Sweet then the bliss his transient dreams inspire, Till chillblains wake him, or the snapping fire. 13
  • 16. The Justice and Peace Group. We wish you all a merry Christmas, and a peaceful New Year, during which we pray for Justice in our world. We, in the J&P Group, are Laurie Hobbs, Barbara Jones, Jim Pearson, Christine Rees, Judith and David Stoner. Women’s Contact Coffee Morning 10.00 am - 12.00 News from the Contact Group. Women's Contact Group have sent £120 to toilet twinning.org (Tearfund). This will provide latrines in Burundi or Cambodia. Since the launch of Toilet Twinning in 2009, more than 1,600 latrines have been built in Burundi - providing safe loos for nearly 10,000 people, which means these people can now go to the loo in a safe, private and hygienic way. For any more information about the charity, please see Barbara or Daphne. We have 2 certificates showing the toilets. To see them, visit the men’s or women’s toilets at church! The Macmillan coffee morning held on Saturday, 8th October raised £120. This was part of the World’s Biggest coffee morning and thanks to all who came. Our next coffee morning will be on the 7th of January. We hope to see you there, and why not bring a friend. Please note that there won’t be a Coffee Morning in December. Barbara Jones The Fairtrade Sunday Stall First of all, may we thank you for your support during 2011. Helping by purchasing Fair Trade goods really does make a difference. In December, there will be a stall on the 11th after the morning service. This will be the last stall for 2011. In 2012, we will be holding a fair trade stall after the morning service on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month. So, for January the stall will be held on the 8th and 22nd. The regular items for sale are food and drink - all of very good quality. Remember that by purchasing Fairtrade goods you are helping to support communities in the poorer countries of the world, and to give those communities a chance to enjoy a better life for their families - standards which we may take for granted here in the UK. Please continue to support your fair trade stall. Thank you. Richard, Barbara and Helen. 14

  • 18. The Lord's Prayer Our Father who art in Heaven Not distant above the earth, but ever present within our Heaven here on earth Hallowed be Thy name May we never lose the reverence Your authority deserves, whilst we bask in the tenderness of Your love. Thy Kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Lord we long to be part of that Place where Your rule is willingly in action by all who dwell there. Give us this day our daily bread. Father Your manifold blessings poured out upon us, constantly remind us that You are sufficient for all our needs. And forgive us our trespasses, Lord, how we need this reassurance as we so often choose what suits us, rather than what we hear Your Spirit telling us is best. As we forgive those who trespass against us. This means totally, unconditionally and without exception or future reference, for this is how You deal with us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Father You know our weaknesses, You've forgiven us so many times; nudge us away from all that will cause us to fall. And if that isn't possible. Lord, pick us up, change us and bring us back to You. For Thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory Everything, everyone, everywhere is Yours. You alone have the right and ability to claim allegiance from us and take the glory Lord; remind us in the birdsong, sunrise and mighty surging sea. For ever and ever. Amen 16

  • 24. Final Thought Joy —The Nativity Mary treasured up all these things and pondered over them - Luke 2:19. Lord, I love the Nativity story. It's all so cosily familiar, like an old sweater or a well-worn pair of slippers. It brings memories of childhood's magic: the smell of fir and the aroma of tangerines. Perhaps, however, it's very familiarity has hidden the sheer wonder of your coming among us, of your joy exploding into the lives of very ordinary people. You remind us, Lord. that ordinary folk are not bypassed by you, and that, no matter how powerless we feel, we have a part in your ongoing story. AMEN.
