3. Letter from the Minister
Dear Friends
What a joy it is to greet you with the words:
Happy Easter!
Through the season of Lent our Bible readings
have covered the Temptations of Jesus, Jesus being warned to
leave an area for His own safety, the story Jesus told of a fig
tree and one of the Prodigal Son, the anointing of Jesus’ feet, the
sharing of the Passover meal and the story of the crucifixion.
Toward the end there was a depth of drama and controversy that
had the whole community of that time aware of what was going on.
We face a very different problem in our culture and time. People
are not looking for or waiting for Jesus and many have become
indifferent to the local Church.
We should not be disheartened but look on this as a time to go
back to the basics of Christianity: mission, service and evangelism.
Jesus took the initiative and “caused” a stir by many of the things
he did. People were surprised, pleased, excited and some became
angry. Jesus upset the status quo by revealing the real nature of
God and showing how foolish ‘religion’ really was.
Being a Christian is all about how we live, each and every day of our
lives. It is about the choices we make, the decisions we reach, and
how we behave with each other and others.
At Easter we celebrate the resurrection, which is the cornerstone
of all that we believe. The events around the life of Jesus were
and are world changing. As a church, we need to be living that
world changing life that tells others there really is something to
celebrate – a life lived in the fullness of God’s love brings joy to us
and to those around us.
Let us all share the joy of Easter!
Sue

DOORS
At last an explanation:
Ever walk into a room with some purpose in mind, only to
completely forget what that purpose was? Turns out, doors
themselves are to blame for these strange memory lapses.
Psychologists at the University of Notre Dame have
discovered that passing through a doorway triggers what's
known as an event boundary in the mind, separating one
set of thoughts and memories from the next. Your brain files
away the thoughts you had in the previous room and
prepares a blank slate for the new locale.
It's not aging, it's the door!

A little girl flying in an aeroplane during a storm said that she is not
frightened because her daddy is the pilot.

8. Absolutely Priceless
UNANSWERED PRAYER
The preacher's 5 year-old daughter noticed that her father always
paused and bowed his head for a moment before starting his
sermon.
One day, she asked him why.
'Well, Honey,' he began, proud that his daughter was so observant
of his messages. 'I'm asking the Lord to help me preach a good
sermon.'
'How come He doesn't answer it?' she asked.

BEING THANKFUL
A Rabbi said to a precocious six-year-old boy, 'So your mother says
your prayers for you each night? That's very commendable. What
does she say?'
The little boy replied, 'Thank God he's in bed!'
________________________________
UNTIMELY ANSWERED PRAYER
During the minister's prayer one Sunday, there was a loud whistle
from one of the back pews.
Tommy's mother was horrified. She pinched him into silence and,
after church, asked, 'Tommy, whatever made you do such a
thing?'
Tommy answered soberly, 'I asked God to teach me to whistle, and
He did!'
________________________________
TIME TO PRAY
A pastor asked a little boy if he said his prayers every night.
'Yes, sir.' the boy replied.
'And, do you always say them in the morning, too?' the pastor
asked.
'No sir,' the boy replied. 'I’m not scared in the daytime.'

10. A way forwards
A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired of his
father as to when they could discuss his use of the car.
His father said he'd make a deal: 'You bring your grades up from a C
to a B average, study your Bible a little, and get your hair cut. Then
we'll talk about the car.'
The boy thought about that for a moment, decided he'd settle for the
offer, and they agreed on it.
After about six weeks his father said. 'Son, you've brought your grades
up and I've observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I'm
disappointed you haven't had your hair cut.’
The boy said, 'You know, Dad, I've been thinking about that, and I've
noticed in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, John the
Baptist had long hair. Moses had long hair ... and there's even strong
evidence that Jesus had long hair.'
You're going to love the Dad's reply: -
His father replied, 'Did you also notice they all walked everywhere
they went?’

A message on a Lincolnshire family history forum
Hi, Missing Lincs,
Now that we are past Valentine's Day, with the commercial emphasis
on cards and candy, I want each of you to reach out to a relative
and give them a hug. It can be an electronic one, a written one, or
a real one. Ask forgiveness for having been out of touch, ask how
they are doing, tell them about your latest family history "find", etc.
But stay in touch.
My mother once went 25 years without speaking to her brother. It
wasn't Sibling rivalry, it was just the routines of daily living. "Not having
anything to say," she once said. I got her a phone card as a present
and told her to call his number, which she did. She cried a lot that
first call. But it started something and they stayed in touch afterward,
even though they lived a world apart.
What will it take to get you to carve out some time to stay in touch
with your family?

11. FINANCIAL SECURITY ACCORDING TO KING DAVID
The money markets of the world are in turmoil. This affects each one of
us - our pensions, our plans, our job. And it affects the church and its
mission. It forces us to ask the question: 'Where is my security?'
In 1923 the eight most powerful financiers in the world met in Chicago.
Their combined wealth was greater than the US treasury. If anyone
knew about financial security it was this group! So what can we learn
from them?
One died penniless, one spent the rest of his life in prison, one became
insolvent, one was pardoned from prison so he could die at home,
and the other three killed themselves.
King David of Israel offers much better financial advice, from a proven
track record. Psalm 16 may be used for personal meditation and
direction:
v1 Keep me safe, 0 God, for in you I take refuge. Where is your
security? Is it in your finances, your job, your family, your health?
Jesus told of a rich man who said he was so secure he could take
his rest. But Jesus said he was a fool.
v2 I said to the Lord, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good
thing.” As you think of your family and your future, dare you say
'Lord, my welfare rests in you alone'?
· Any thing we hold on to for security robs us of true security in God.
v3 As for the saints who are in the land, they are the glorious ones in
whom is all my delight. v4 The sorrows of those will increase who
run after other gods. I will not pour out their libations of blood or
take up their names on my lips. David is comforted to have
friends who take the same approach as himself.
· Where do you look for advice and direction for you and your
children?
v5 Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup: you have
made my lot secure.
v6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I
have a delightful inheritance. Do you realise God cares in detail
about all your needs? The Bible offers 500 verses on prayer; less
than 500 verses on faith, but more than 2,000 verses on money
and possessions. In the Gospels, one in every 10 verses (288 in all)
deals directly with money.
· Do you follow this guidance to find security?

15. THE RAIN
It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80's
arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a
hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am. I took his vital signs and had
him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone
would to able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch and decided,
since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound.
On exam, it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the
needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound.
While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor's
appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry.
The gentleman told me no, but he needed to go to the nursing home
to eat breakfast with his wife.
I enquired as to her health.
He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim
of Alzheimer's Disease.
As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late.
He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not
recognised him in five years now.
I was surprised, and asked him, 'And you still go every morning, even
though she doesn't know who you are?'
He smiled as he patted my hand and said, 'She doesn't know me,
but I still know who she is.'
I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm, and
thought, 'That is the kind of love I want in my life.'
True love is neither physical, nor romantic.
True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be.
The happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything;
they just make the best of everything they have.
'Life isn't about how to survive the storm, But how to dance in the rain.'

Little Jack Horner
It's thought that Jack Horner was actually Thomas Horner a steward to
Richard Whiting, the last abbot of Glastonbury put to death under
King Henry VIII.
The story goes that in a bid to stop his abbey being destroyed the
abbot had sent Horner to the King with a huge Christmas pie, secretly
containing the deeds to 12 manor houses as a sweetener. But Horner
arrived with only 11, taking one for himself.
Whatever the truth, the ploy didn't work. The abbey was torn down
anyway..

17. We did it! Supermarkets watchdog given power to fine
What a victory! We’re celebrating the Government
announcement this week that the supermarkets watchdog
will have the power to fine, from day one.
------------------------------
Announcement dated 6 December 2012
------------------------------
This is a huge success for Traidcraft supporters, who have been
campaigning determinedly for the watchdog to be established with
the powers it needs to stop supermarkets from bullying their suppliers.
Jo Swinson, the Minister charged with setting up the body, has been
deluged with emails, postcards and letters over the last few months
from campaigners calling for a supermarkets watchdog with strong
powers.
And it worked! A statement by the Government acknowledged that
‘the power to fine… would give the Adjudicator more teeth’. Jo
Swinson even sent a tweet saying ‘well done to all who campaigned
for this’.
We couldn’t have done it without you. Here’s how you’ve helped to
bring about a strong watchdog:
• Over 12000 postcards, letters and emails were sent to Jo Swinson
and MP's calling for a supermarkets watchdog with teeth.
• Our very own watchdog visited Westminster to deliver a message
that the watchdog must have strong powers to hold supermarkets
to account.
• In a House of Commons debate, MP's from all political parties
called for the body to be given the power to fine, from day one.
• Minister Jo Swinson praised Traidcraft supporters for ‘their tireless
campaigning’ and even presented the toy ‘toothless’ watchdog,
given to her by Traidcraft, at the House of Commons to
demonstrate the pressure she was under from campaigners.
The perseverance by Traidcraft supporters throughout this campaign
has been phenomenal, and the result is a huge victory in the fight to
prevent farmers and workers in the UK and overseas from being
squeezed by supermarkets. We’re celebrating this impressive
campaigns success, and we hope you will too!

19. Crime Prevention Advice – For April 2013
Dear all,
A particular type of fraud targeting elderly people is on the increase
across London. Our aim is to raise awareness and provide some key
crime prevention messages to the elderly and their circle of support -
friends, family, neighbours etc.
By raising awareness we will decrease the likelihood of people falling
victim.
The average age of the victim is 70 years old. The average loss is £4,000.
The Method
1) The method varies but essentially involves a victim being
telephoned (cold -called) by a suspect who alleges to be someone
of authority (eg, from the police, bank, Serious Fraud Office). The
suspect tells the victim there is a problem with their bank account
(like it has been compromised) and that their bank card must be
collected.
2) If the victim is unconvinced that the call is genuine they are
instructed to hang up and call a genuine number – such as 999 or
the telephone number on the rear of their bank card. However, the
suspect keeps the telephone line open and so the call goes straight
back to the fraudster who then deals with any subsequent call,
convincing the victim of their authenticity.
3) The victim is then content to reveal their bank details, namely the
PIN.
4) An often unwitting courier or taxi driver is sent to collect the victim’s
card. The card is delivered to a second suspect, who then passes it
on to the fraudster. The fraudster then empties the bank account.
Key Messages
Primary: (To potential victims, family, friends) Never give anyone your
PIN or bank card – the police and banks will never ask for them.
Secondary/supporting message(s): (To cabbies/couriers) Beware of
collecting and delivering packages from elderly people as you
may be assisting in a criminal offence.
Reporting offences: If you have been a victim call the police on 101 or
in an emergency by dialling 999. (Generally victims are elderly /
vulnerable and therefore it is NOT appropriate to report this matter to
Action Fraud).

22. The Perfect Minister
The Perfect Minister: The Perfect Minister preaches for exactly
10 minutes. S/he condemns sin roundly but never hurts
anyone’s feelings. S/he works from 8.00 am until midnight
and is also the church janitor.
The Perfect Minister makes £120 a week, wears good clothes,
drives a good car, buys good books and donates £100 a
week to the parish. S/he is 29 years old and has 40 years’
worth of experience. Above all, s/he is handsome/gorgeous.
The Perfect Minister has a burning desire to work with
teenagers, and spends most of his/her time with the senior
citizens. S/he smiles all the time with a straight face because
s/he has a sense of humour that keeps him/her seriously
dedicated to the local church. S/he makes 15 home visits a
day and is always in her office to be handy when needed.
The Perfect Minister always has time for church meetings and
all of its committees. S/he never misses the meeting of any
church organization, and is always busy evangelising the
unchurched.
The Perfect Minister is always in the next district over.
If your minister does not measure up, simply send this notice to
six other districts that are tired of their minister too. Then
bundle up your minister and send him/her to the district at the
top of your list. If everyone co-operates, in one week you will
receive 1,643 ministers. One of them should be perfect.
Have faith in this letter. One church broke the chain and got
its old minister back in less than three months .......

24. Final Thought
FRET NOT – Psalm 37 for present times
Don't get worried when folk are leaving,
Don't keep asking: "What shall we do?"
Keep things in the right perspective:
The Almighty cares for you.
Don't keep staring at the problems,
Knowing they're too big for you.
Nothing is too big for Jesus –
Think of Easter, Calvary too.
Keep on reaching out to others
Just as He reached down to you.
Shut doors, blank looks, cold sneers – maybe;
And a thrill or two.
Don't forget the younger people.
Underneath that strange hair-do
Is someone who could serve the Master
In Southport or Peru.
Don't forget to pray together,
Loving even "you-know-who".
Don't crucify the love you're speaking,
By what you do.
When you're tired and despondent,
Bewildered, bothered , browned off,
blue:
Still He says: "I am with you always"
And it's true.
