Letter from the Minister
Dear Friends,
Summer is here – and it is such a relief to have
some sunshine to make us all smile! We have had
to suffer far too long with overcast skies and clouds – although I am
told we are already in a drought!
All sorts of things cause droughts – a lack of rain, a lack of food, a lack
of faith - a deficiency of anything can be called a drought.
I am often told by people that they lack faith, but what is faith?
Faith is belief with strong conviction; firm belief in something for which
there may be no tangible proof; complete trust in or devotion to. Faith
is the opposite of doubt.
Faith is possibly the single-most important element of the Christian life.
Hebrews 11:6 states, "And without faith it is impossible to please God,
because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that
he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”
The Bible gives this description of faith in Hebrews 11:1: "Now faith is
being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see."
Faith is hard for many, and simple for some; faith requires us to believe
in the evidence we have, and in what we can no longer see or touch or
feel.
Doubting or questioning helps us to firm our faith, to define what our
faith is.
Faith – it takes a leap of faith to have faith!
My prayer is that we don’t stay in drought, but find the plenty that God
gives.

This year, HFH will take place from Monday 5th, to Friday 9th, August.
The times are 10.00 am - 4.00 pm
The venue is Hayes Free Church. However, on Wednesday there will
be an outing. At present, the details are being finalised so for now,
its a mystery tour.
Come & enjoy a week of fun & friendship for £25.00, or £5.00 per day.
If you only want to go on the outing, the cost for this has still to be
confirmed.

Church Meetings
The next Elders’ meeting will be held at 8.00pm in the small hall on
Tuesday 2nd July.
The next Church Meeting will be held in the small hall on Sunday 28th
July at 12.00 noon after the morning service.
v Dr. Clive Timehin is a local preacher who comes from Bromley
Methodist Church. He is a member of the Methodist Council
Medical Committee. He has conducted Sunday worship at HFC
before.
v Mrs. Margaret Smith is a Methodist Lay Preacher. She has led
services at HFC on a number of occasions.
v Rev. Dr. Peter Stevenson is the Minister of Crossways URC Church
at the Elephant and Castle. This Church has a long and rich
history of serving the community for almost 150 years.
v Major Cliff Kent belongs to the Regent Hall Branch of The
Salvation Army (the only church in Oxford Street, London). He
was formerly from the Thornton Heath branch of The Salvation
Army. He has conducted Sunday worship at HFC on many
occasions.
v Jim Holman is a Methodist preacher.

Women's Contact Group
The Contact Group will meet at 8.00pm on Monday the 1st of July at
Janet Moren’s home - 48, Woodlea Drive. The next meeting will take
place on 2nd September at Joan Smith’s home - 18, Hurstdene Avenue.

Men's Group
On Thursday 18th July, at 8.00pm, there will be a BBQ at Mounthurst
Road organised by Andy Luck. We won’t be meeting in August.

Hayes Mothers’ & Toddlers’ Club
We welcome all babies and children under school age, accompanied
by their parents, grandparents or carers, to our club on Friday
afternoons between 2 and 4pm during term time. The fee is £1 per
family – tea, squash and biscuits are provided.
This is a time when adults can meet up, while the children in their care
are busy playing with toys and activities in the company of other
children.
Our last meeting for the Summer term is on July 12th.
We meet again in the Autumn term on September 13th.

Bromley Borough Food Bank
A national collection of food from Tesco customers will take place on
Friday 5th July between 10.00 and 13.00 hours and
Saturday 6th July between 10.00 and 18.00 hours!
Volunteers are needed at the local Tesco stores – Bromley, Orpington
and Sidcup – to distribute lists to customers and ask them to donate
just one/two items; possibly help sort and pack donated food in to
boxes.
Adults and young people needed! Also a van and a driver.
Please pass on the urgent need for helpers to as many as you can.

Stewardship
Recently, we received a communication from the URC reminding us
that Stewardship is not only about money, important though that is:
it suggests that Stewardship is the response to God’s giving in
Jesus Christ. It is about giving, about giving ourselves, without reserve,
to achieve God’s purposes of love and, in acknowledging that all we
have first comes from God, offering answers to the question of how
we respond and use the gifts He has given us.
The suggestions go like this (slightly abridged):
v Worship: God gives all of life completely out of love: our
response is to worship God and grow in prayer and spirituality
and develop our discernment of where God is and what He is
calling us to do.
v Peace: God gives peace such as the world cannot give: our
response is to be active peacemakers, building relationships
across the church and across the world.
v Gospel: God gives the greatest gift of all – Jesus; our response
is to receive this gift for ourselves and to share it with others.
v Creation: God gives us the world; our response is to care for it
and use it responsibly, safeguarding, sustaining and renewing
the life of the Earth.
v Justice: God gives everything to everyone, for God loves
everyone equally: our response is to share what God has given
and treat everyone with respect.
v Body: God gives us intricate and wonderful bodies of such
variety: our response is to treat ourselves and others with respect
and love as an integral part of God’s creation.
v Property: God gives creative abilities and resources to build
private and public property; our response is to care for
property handed on to us in trust and to put it to creative use
in our generation, for example by making our buildings active
in the life of local neighbourhoods.
v People: God gives people to each other, created in his image;
our response is to welcome others equally and help each other
become the people God intends us to be.

Christian Aid Walk 2013
Sunday 19th May saw Mike and I heading for
Hayes station to do our duty as stewards for
the Christian Aid Walk “Circling the City”. We
were at St. Botolph’s without Bishopsgate
church, where we have been before, and
Jeff the caretaker made us very welcome
once again. For almost 900 years a parish
church has stood on this site, and many
thousands have worshipped here from the
reign of Edward I. St. Botolph’s is a city church
and seeks to minister to those who work in, or
visit, the city. The church is there to
supplement, not replace, the ministry people
receive in their home parish church.
St Botolph’s without Bishopsgate survived the
Great Fire of London unscathed, and only lost
one window in the Second World War, but on
24 April 1993 was one of the many buildings to
be damaged by a bomb planted by the IRA which damaged a
large area of the City.
Perhaps you are wondering who St. Botolph was. He was one of the
earliest and most revered of East Anglian saints and became known
as the patron saint of wayfarers. After his death his relics were-
brought to London through various towns and eventually through the
four City gates, Aldersgate, Bishopsgate, Aldgate and Billingsgate.
The Churches at the entrance to these gates were named after him.
The first three remain, but the one at Billingsgate was destroyed in the
Great Fire and never rebuilt. It seems that as his relics were conveyed
from place to place, his name became associated with wayfarers
and travellers. Around 70 Churches are named after him.
We enjoyed our day very
much and hope to do it
again next year.

For those of us who live officially in “West Wickham” and not
Hayes, I read with horror in the WW Residents’ Association
Summer magazine that the Post Office plans to close its
West Wickham branch in October.

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK 12-18 MAY 2013
On behalf of Christian Aid, many thanks to the 15 people who helped
deliver and collect envelopes from 15 roads in the area.
The sum raised was:-
House-to-house collection £647.21
HFC tin £117.18
Coffee morning and Bring & Buy £147.00
Sunday morning coffee £ 20.00
CTH Agape meal £ 33.00
£964.39
Additional funds will be collected from HMRC direct by Christian Aid
from the 23 people who completed the Gift Aid declaration on the
envelopes.
Of the 21 churches in the Bromley District who took part in the house-
to-house collection only 9 churches assisted in the Flag Day collection
in central Bromley, and whilst there were 24 collectors, there was only
one from HFC who raised £19.64. The total raised was £540.26.

The Croydon Symphonic Band
To celebrate its Ruby (40th) Anniversary,
the Croydon Symphonic Band will be giving
a Birthday Concert
at 8.00 pm at the Fairfield Hall, Croydon,
on Wednesday 10th July.
The lively programme will include the Symphonic suite from
“Star Wars” (John Williams), a selection of Gershwin and a Suite
from Prokofieff’s “Romeo and Juliet”.

Virgin London Marathon 2013
Olly Carr successfully ran the 2013 London Marathon in a time of
3 hours 56 minutes to raise money for the Oxford Branch of
Samaritans. He volunteered at this branch for three years, and
it is one of the few remaining 24/7 branches that is open all day,
every day to support callers in distress and despair.
Olly would like to thank everyone from Hayes Free Church who
so kindly donated to this cause. It made a huge difference,
and made all the long training runs seem that bit easier! He has
broken his target of £2000, which will help Samaritans to
continue to support those in need.

Women’s Contact Coffee Morning
We will be holding coffee mornings in the Small Hall
from 10.00am to 12.00 on the 13th of July, 2013,
and on the 10th of August.
We are continuing to raise monies to contribute to disaster relief funds in
different parts of the world.
We hope to see you at the Coffee Mornings, and why not bring a friend.
Please note that the monies raised from the coffee mornings are
separate from those raised through the refreshments trolley after
Sunday morning services.

The Fairtrade Sunday Stall
We hold a fair trade stall after the morning service on the 2nd and 4th
Sunday of each month.
In July the stall will be held on the 28th. (as the service on the 14th is
away from the church, there will not be a stall). In August the stall will
be held on the 11th and 25th
The message is: “Please buy Fairtrade. Every purchase helps in a good
way”.
If there are any lines you would like the stall to carry, please say. :-)

Footnote
You may have read about the disastrous loss of bees in the UK, and the
anticipated increase of the price of honey. We are checking whether
the price of Fairtrade honey, which is imported, will be unaffected. If
Fairtrade honey prices will remain the same, we plan to order
additional honey in September to meet the anticipated demand.
So, do check at the stall or with one of us about the situation.

which is said to have been inspired by a real event when a girl called
Mary Sawyer, living in Sterling, Massachusetts, caused commotion by
taking her pet sheep to school.

Dear Editor
I write to express my concern about the extremely radical
proposals included in the June edition of ‘Catalyst’. There’s the
experiment to hold the evening service of June 23rd at 10.30 in
the morning which is a bit drastic .... . I suggest that the faithful
dozen or so regular evening service attendees .... should be
briefed .... . The effect on the regular morning congregation is
quite problematic; the majority of whom have never been to an
evening service .... And as for poor Pastor Roy Powell, scheduled
to take a service at 6.30 pm that same day, I can envisage him
ending up with just the organist for company....
I’m sure we are all concerned about H.F.C.’s on-going budget
deficit, and maybe were hoping that a good result from the
annual Prayer and Gift Day would help alleviate the situation.
‘Pray then give cheerfully’ might well be an appropriate maxim
for the day. But - wait! I see from page six that this year a subtle
.... change has been introduced - June 15th’s event is to be
called a ‘Payer and Gift Day’. .... It’s a shame about the missing
prayer part, though - perhaps we can leave that to the throng
who regularly attend the Tuesday prayer meetings?
One last small gripe: I see the gift envelopes make mention of
being able to reclaim tax from all our spending on gin. Well, I’m
sorry, but I’m sure I’m not alone in never touching the stuff, so I
shan’t be contributing anything from that source.
By the time this letter appears in print the relevant events will
have already taken place. I just hope the potential disasters I
envisage prove to be less serious than I fear they could be. ......

The idea of having a letters page in Catalyst has been around for a
while. It would be nice. The “Catalyst Needs You” page could be used,
but its preferable to keep that page for creative and artistic submissions.
The following letter, which has been heavily edited, has been recently
received, and has proved to be the Catalyst for launching a Letters
Page. The letters page will be used when there is material.
