5. WHY DID THE FIRST CRUSADE
HAPPEN?
The First Crusade was launched in 1095 by Pope Urban II to
check the advance of the Muslims and regain control of the city of
Jerusalem and the Holy Land.
6. INFORMATION
There have been a number of crusades over history. However, the medieval Crusades originally
started in 1095 with the major goal of recapturing Jerusalem and the Holy Land from Muslim rule, which
had been in place since the 7th century. However, the immediate cause of the first crusade in 1095 was
as a response to a call from the Eastern Orthodox Empire for help against the expansion of the Muslim
Turks into Anatolia (modern day Turkey). The Pope delivered an edict that it was God's will that
Christians fight for the return of the Holy Land and anyone who fought was guaranteed a "do not pass
Go" ticket straight to Heaven (Purgatory still existed then, you see...). Knights, merchants, and ordinary
men, women and children from all over Europe flocked towards the eastern Mediterranean in response
to the Pope's call to action. This was how the first commercial banks were formed, as suddenly large
amounts of people needed to access trading currency a long way from home.
