Classroom Instruction That Works
Marzano and Pickering
Chapter 5
Homework and
Practice
Homework: How’s That Working For You?
Homework: Generalizations from the Research
The of homework assigned to
students should be between
grade levels
 in homework should be kept to
a minimum
The should be identified
and articulated
If homework is assigned, it should be
on
Appropriate Purposes of Homework
For skills and process
Practice: to increase accuracy, fluency,
and, if appropriate, speed
For information and ideas
Preparation: for new learning
Elaboration: to increase understanding
Issues to Consider When Developing
Homework Policies
 What kind of homework is most effective?
 How much homework is appropriate?
 At what age is homework a useful learning
tool?
 Who is responsible for deciding how much
homework to assign?
 Who is responsible for monitoring
homework?
 Is homework a requirement that students
should be held accountable for?
Homework should:
Be meaningful
Consume appropriate
amount of time
Require little or no parent
involvement
Helpful Hints
Begin the assignment in class to
guarantee students are successful
Students learn responsibility- they should
not need parents to complete it!
Don’t send homework every day for every
subject
Differentiate the assignment for the needs
of your students
Helpful Hints
 Homework should not be punitive
1. It should not be graded
2. You could let students work towards a
collective score or personal reward
3. Remember: homework should foster a
positive attitude toward school
 No TAKS passages
It’s Time to Review!
Thumbs Up/
Thumbs Down
Thumbs Up/ Thumbs Down
I sent home 75 multiplication problems
I sent home a few Reading TAKS
passages
We practiced the assignment in class to
check for understanding
I sent home a TAKS writing prompt for the
students to write at home for a grade
My students understand the purpose of
their homework
The students could complete the
homework without parent support
I gave a homework assignment on a skill I
introduced today
I gave prompt feedback on the returned
homework
I gave 18 students zeroes in the
gradebook for not completing homework
I told my students to get their parents to
help them with the homework
My students feel more comfortable after
practicing the skill for 10 minutes
Thumbs up for effective homework!
A Final Thought…
Homework (if done
correctly) increases
achievement by 28%.
