4. RUAN – FAIR OAKS PARTNERSHIP
• Fair Oaks Farms, one the most recognized dairies in the world,
selected Ruan Transportation Management Systems to haul its milk
and manage its compressed natural gas (CNG) fleet in Fair Oaks,
Indiana
• While CNG and liquid natural gas (LNG) have been used to fuel
large fleets of smaller vehicles such as buses or waste collection
trucks, no other project has demonstrated the use of renewable
CNG for a fleet with an 80,000 pound hauling capacity and a range
of almost 650 miles
4
5. WHAT IS CNG?
• CNG is naturally odorless, colorless and tasteless
• It is stored in high-pressure fuel cylinders at 3,000 to 3,600 pounds
per square inch
• The gas costs 15 to 40 percent less than gasoline or diesel. It does
require more frequent fueling
• CNG is non-toxic and burns more cleanly than gasoline, which
means the oil does not have to be changed as often
5
6. THE CNG PROCESS
• Waste is collected from 32,000 Fair Oaks cows
• In a process called anaerobic digestion, microorganisms feed on
manure from 32,000 Fair Oaks cows and excrete methane
• Fair Oaks Farms traps and processes the methane with its on-dairy
methane digester that processes the dairies’ cattle manure into
CNG
• The methane gas is piped directly to a fueling station in Fair
Oaks, Indiana, for compression and distribution

8. RUAN – FAIR OAKS PARTNERSHIP SCOPE
• Ruan began hauling Fair Oaks milk on CNG powered trucks in
August 2011
• The fleet, operated by Ruan, includes 110 professional drivers and
42 milk hauling tractors powered by renewable CNG
• Ruan professional drivers are trained in milk handling and milk
sample testing along with CNG fueling
• Ruan professional drivers fuel in the Fair Oaks fueling location and
in another CNG station in Southern Indiana, providing all the fuel in
the delivery network

9. CNG BENEFITS
• The CNG trucks replace diesel-powered models and the fuel
displaces 1.5 million gallons of diesel annual
• CNG emissions are 60% lower than diesel
• Displacing more than 1.5 million gallons of diesel per year
significantly reduces both direct emissions and the traditional
carbon footprint of energy production
• Fair Oaks Farms/Ruan were able to secure federal and state grants
to help fund the CNG project

10. ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
Ruan strives to continuously examine our processes to ensure that we minimize our
impact on the environment while achieving efficiency, responsiveness and cost savings
for our customers.
• Ruan’s environmental program provides guidelines and measures for:
• Reducing fuel consumption
• Reducing or eliminating materials for disposal
• Preventing pollution
• Effectively addressing unauthorized releases
• Ruan is an official SmartWay Partner
• Ruan received the highest score in its application review
• Ruan is also a part of the Carrier and Shipper Stakeholder leadership group
• Ruan has partnered with the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy
• Ruan co-chairs the organization's Environmentally Sustainable Methods for Achieving
Responsible Transportation (E-SMART) project
• E-SMART is developing dairy-specific transportation guidelines to cut carbon dioxide
emissions by 165,000 metric tons annually, potentially saving 16.5 million gallons of diesel

• Lighter weight equipment and aerodynamics improve fuel consumption
• Collaboration with engine manufacturers to develop lower-emitting and longer-lasting engines
• Low-viscosity lubricants
• Driver training
• Reducing highway speeds
• SMITH System training reduces maintenance and improves safety
• Coordination with national spill response partners
• Consumption footprint
• 99% reduction in paper to communicate among our corporate and field offices since 2007
