Presentation at the 1st International Universal Design for Learning Symposium Learning Together. Maynooth University, June 8th, 2023 There has been a growing interest for Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as a framework for inclusion in both the K-12 and post-secondary sectors over the last decade, and this momentum has been noticeable globally. The body of literature which evidences the pedagogical benefits of UDL implementation for the inclusion of diverse learners is now broad and diversified. There is also growing interest in examining UDL implementation from a leadership and administrative perspective, examining it as a management of change process. Throughout this growth in scholarship and field initiatives, the concepts of student voice and student advocacy have frequently been used and showcased. The literature regarding the learner role in the process of UDL implementation is, however, still limited. Placing learners in the driving seat when it comes to UDL adoption is therefore purely conceptual and abstract at this stage. It will be challenging to genuinely scale-up UDL as a framework, in both the K-12 sector and the post-secondary landscape, until students have considered with care and offered an active leadership role. Students’ perception of UDL and its objectives are key in the success of initiatives that seek to integrate it across organizations. This fully interactive session will examine the various facets of the notion of learner involvement in the process of UDL adoption. First, the session will consider the way UDL must be explicitly discussed with learners within the class, while UDL initiatives are attempted. Failure to explain this process to students, and to actively engage them in it, significantly limits the scope of such efforts. The second part of the session will consider learner voice beyond the class itself, and will discuss ways to involve students as co-advocates for UDL growth, across institutions. This is a rich and complex process of critical empowerment which has unfortunately been so far rushed or ignored. The third part of the session will consider how UDL professional development should be addressed not just to educators but to student groups and student representatives. This section of the presentation will explore how the UDL principles must bee woven into such resources and PD for students and student groups, and how they must inform the design of such initiatives.

Week 3 - Discussion 1 ESE633: Collaborative Relationships & Transition Be a Morale Booster by Being a Leader! This discussion is your opportunity to demonstrate mastery of the objective analyze ways to create a collaborative school culture to promote professional growth and leadership and analyze the value of co-teaching as an inclusion model of instructional delivery . The discussion represents your mastery of the Course Learning Outcomes 1 & 2. Before the reauthorization of IDEA in 2004, schools were implementing inclusion, but it was not necessarily the ‘norm’; instead, children with a disability were educated in a self-contained classroom within the general school population. Included with the most updated changes was a closer alignment with NCLB (No Child Left Behind) requirement for data-based decisions, more rigorous standards and highly qualified teachers (No Child Left Behind, 2013). Teachers new to the field of education are being taught during their coursework how to implement inclusive, co-teaching practices and are therefore unfamiliar with past teaching practices. On the other hand, teachers who have been practicing for more than 10 years have experiences in both education environments. While it is clear that co-teaching is not the most popular method of instructional delivery for all teachers, viewpoints have been made clear and with good reasoning for use of this method. To prepare for this discussion, it is recommended you review Co-Teaching in Inclusive Classrooms: The Pros and Cons , where the author concisely lists each point of view and teaching suggestions related thereto. You will see that co-teaching has many benefits from reviewing that resource in conjunction with your reading of the opening the “Voices from the Field” provided as an introduction to chapter seven in the Murawski and Spencer (2011) textbook for our course. Initial Post - Imagine you are in a Professional Learning Community that promotes inclusive education and co-teaching. Imagine further that your principal has asked your group to talk with the faculty about the inclusive initiative and boosting teacher morale. Using the first initial of your last name as a guide, select a concern below about co-teaching. In your response, explain why the teacher may have felt that way and describe how collaborative efforts between the two teachers could have proceeded differently. If you last name begins with the letters A – M: You will address the concerns of the special educator in the co-teaching environment when you hear statements such as: “Sure, I’ve co-taught before. I hated it. All I did was walk around the room and check that my students had their homework or paid attention. I was a glorified aide, at the mercy of whatever the general education teacher wanted me to do” (Murawski & Spencer, 2011, p. 93). Week 3 - Discussion 2 When to Collaborate and When to Co-Teach? Examined the issues related to delivering service excellence through the lens of 39 graduating school librarians in written assignments for the final course of their certification program, as they focus on what is needed to apply standards to become an effective school library media specialist in the 21st century. Of the 16 issues identified the concern over technology and their role as a technology specialist dominated the ranking. The results reinforce the ongoing need for education program coursework that continues to emphasize the role of technology in the 21st century school learning environment.

To maximize learning value from 1-to-1 programs in schools, computing devices need to be personal, portable and multifunctional. The increased access provided by 1-to-1 devices creates great opportunities for school-librarians to support their school technology directions and to implement 21st century information literacy and reading promotion programs. The key factor in the success of 1-to-1 programs is teacher implementation of appropriate pedagogies. Teacher-librarians have the chance to provide leadership in pedagogies that most effectively utilize these devices to improve learning outcomes.

With the growing use of the Internet, collaboration is being extended to include collaboration between schools, teachers and teacher-librarians that may be geographically disparate. The processes required to undertake this form of collaboration often require a new set of skills, including the skills of communicating using electronic media.
