            eHealth & Biomedical Informa3cs Methods – INFO90001
Overview:
This subject introduces core informa3cs tools and methods as used in eHealth, transla3onal biomedical
research, simula3on & modelling, and biomedical knowledge management.

Timetable
All classes for this course will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6pm-‐9pm between 30th October and
27th November 2012. The physical loca3on is the University of Melbourne Parkville Campus.

Major topics covered in tutorials and hands-‐on computer labs:

1.    How can we manage clinical data? Informa3cs tools & methods for ehealth and broadband-‐enabled
      health, including shareable medical records, telehealth, mobile health; terminologies, coding &
      standards e.g. SNOMED-‐CT, HL7A, secure messaging, medical imaging (DICOM) and lab data (LOINC);
      and clinical decision support systems.
2.    How can we integrate clinical data with molecular, popula3on, environmental and other data
      sources? Informa3cs tools & methods for transla3onal research, including genomic data sources
      (microarray and next genera3on DNA sequencing); data integra3on & analysis plaYorms e.g. BioGrid,
      CaBIG; Gene ontology; and clinical research informa3cs (clinical trials).
3.    How can we use computer models to simulate human biology and disease? Informa3cs tools &
      methods for simula3on & modelling; anatomical ontologies (FMA); VPH and Physiome plaYorm;
      infodemiology tools, systems medicine, virtual environments for clinical prac3ce.
4.    How can we manage health and biomedical knowledge? Informa3cs tools & methods for biomedical
      informa3cs research, including bibliographic and web informa3on; MeSH, and databases; biomedical
      text mining; social and seman3c web for health and life sciences; technology assessment; and
      systema3c reviews and meta-‐analyses.
5.    How can we develop the next genera3on of health and bioinforma3cs tools and methods? Students
      will gain exposure to research trends and advances, including extreme phenotyping, informa3cs for
      personalised, regenera3ve and nano medicine.
