Introduction
This paper defines the strategy for implementing the zEnterprise System as an
integrated, heterogeneous, and virtualized infrastructure, ideal for supporting
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) in cloud computing deployments. A previous paper,
“The Value of IBM zEnterprise for Deploying Heterogeneous Private Clouds,” addresses
the value issue.
This paper categorizes the issues that confront IT professionals in the current business
environment. Among those issues are IT professionals’ perceptions, infrastructure
complexity, divergent technologies, and data center efficiency. It then enumerates the
zEnterprise features and characteristics that address those issues and that make this
infrastructure ideal for supporting IaaS on the cloud.
To support the zEnterprise System implementation strategy IBM has extended and
clarified several cloud concepts. These include:
Expanding the IaaS definition to include hardware infrastructure services comprised
of heterogeneous server platforms.
Identifying key advanced virtualization and virtualization management capabilities
required for IaaS.
Developing “fit-for-purpose,” using a defined-workload metric to determine the
impact of zEnterprise.
Issue Definition
For the purpose of issue definition, the assumption is that readers are familiar with the
cloud computing concepts and solutions, such as on-demand, often self-service, and on-
demand rapid deployment of computing resources1. When looking at implementing a
cloud solution, specifically IaaS, a variety of issues impact the decision process
including:
Perception of how private, public, and hybrid clouds are implemented.
The impact of implementing cloud computing on current infrastructure and the
issue of creeping complexity.

The lack of interaction by divergent technologies used within an organization.
Increasing energy demands and the need to efficiently handle energy requirements.
Perceptions
Cloud computing includes several deployment models including; Public, Private, and
Hybrid–a combination of the two. The IaaS service model can fit all three deployment
models. With IaaS the users control the operating system, storage, deployed applications
and networking components; but not the underlying cloud infrastructure. There is a
perception, fostered by public cloud providers, that the public cloud has performance
and cost advantages when compared to the private cloud deployment model. This
perception misses the understanding that obtaining the best results from moving
workloads to a cloud platform requires selecting an underlying physical infrastructure
fit for the purposes of those workloads. The one-size-fits-all model of the usually
homogeneous underlying platform of public cloud offerings precludes a fit-to-purpose
implementation that can be achieved with a heterogeneous private cloud
implementation.
Creeping Complexity and Current IT Infrastructures
In many cases the current IT infrastructures do not represent an efficient use of
resources. There are 32.6 million servers worldwide, representing 85 percent idle
computing capacity. Fifteen percent of those servers run 24/7 without actually being
actively used on a daily basis. In addition, server acquisition is growing at a rate of six
times annually, storage demand increases 69 percent each year, and virtual machines are
growing by 42 percent yearly. Managing this growth requires a solution that involves a
more efficient use of existing install base and potentially eliminating the need for
additional resources.2
Integrating Divergent Technologies
Over time, IT projects within organizations have made use of a variety of distributed
technologies, resulting in the creation of isolated technology “silos.” These organizations
now need to align end-to-end business processes across these technology boundaries.
They need to replace individual islands of computing (silos) and to reduce complexity,
improve security, and bring applications closer to their data. There is also the need to
make resources from one project available for other projects.

Data Center Energy Efficiency
Data centers have doubled their energy use in the past five years, with an additional 18
percent increase in data center energy costs projected by the end of 2012. IT managers
need an effective approach that addresses power consumption and implements a
redundancy to ensure 24/7 operation.
Solution and Opportunities
The IBM zEnterprise is a family of workload-
optimized, multi-architecture computer
systems. It includes the zEnterprise 196 (z196)
or the zEnterprise 114 (z114) Central
Processing Complex (CPC), the zEnterprise
Unified Resource Manager, and the IBM
zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension (zBX),
with integrated optimizers, IBM blades, or
both. IBM has designed zEnterprise to
address the issues currently impacting the IT
environment.
The zEnterprise family provides a system designed specifically to address IaaS on a
private heterogeneous cloud where the components run on the same architecture, a
single hardware or operating system platform. The private cloud cans be hosted within
the organization or through an external provider. This heterogeneous cloud includes
several hardware and operating system platforms to accommodate workloads running
on different platforms at the same time. zEnterprise has the ability to host many multi-
tier workloads on a set of heterogeneous, virtualized server architectures, managed as a
single, integrated IT infrastructure.
IBM zEnterprise provides the ability to consolidate the hardware infrastructure,
eliminate redundant software and data, improve service delivery, and modernize the
enterprise. The services it supports include automation of administrative tasks, dynamic
scaling, optimization, desktop virtualization, and internet connectivity. They enable the
deployment of an integrated hardware platform, bringing together mainframe and
distributed technologies. The z114 is the next-generation midrange mainframe,
delivering extensive growth options, flexibility, efficiency, and improved price
performance. The z114 scales without adding complexity, to meet growing demands on
the infrastructure.

zEnterprise includes expanded ISV support for enterprise applications, and targeted
applications that interact with mainframe data and transactions. This system unifies and
optimizes multiple architectures to work as a single system, breaking down silos and
enabling the service provider to bring mainframe and distributed technologies together
on an integrated hardware platform, Individual islands of computing and work can be
replaced to reduce complexity, improve security, and bring applications closer to the
data they need.
By implementing a zEnterprise System containing the z114 and its attached zBX
managed by Unified Resource Manager, organizations can treat virtualized resources as
a single resource pool. This creates an integrated system with workload management
across the multisystem, multitier, multi-architecture environment. The virtual-server
lifecycle management enables directed and dynamic virtual server provisioning from a
single, uniform point of control. Thus, creating and deleting servers, and both real and
virtual networking resources, are managed by Unified Resource Manager.
Unified Resource Manager provides centralized management of heterogeneous
resources for simplification and resiliency. Unified Resource Manager incorporates
workload-aware resource optimization that can be used to identify and optimize the
physical and virtual system resources that support an application. It has the ability to
inspect, report, and manage all connected resources (no matter which platform) being
used in the service of a defined workload. Functions of Unified Resource Manager are
grouped into suites of tiered functionality that enable different levels of capability–
Manage, Advanced Management, and Automate–establishing a common management
infrastructure for both mainframe and distributed-systems.
A workload-optimized multi-architecture allows the creation of an integrated
infrastructure that aligns to end-to-end business processes across technology
boundaries. This system unifies and optimizes multiple architectures to work as a single
system, breaking down silos to enable innovation through flexibility. Projects are
provided resources and enabled within days, not weeks.
The zBX provides the hardware infrastructure to support select IBM BladeCenter PS701
Express and IBM BladeCenter HX5 blade servers. The zBX offers hardware redundancy
to improve performance–built in at various levels–power infrastructure, rack mounted
network switches, and power units. There is also redundant networking to the z114 for
data and service management. zBX hardware redundancy improves performance–built

Conclusions
IT managers are looking to cloud computing, specifically IaaS, as a solution to the
challenge of growing demands. They need to identify a strategy that enables them to
address the issues of infrastructure, excess capacity, underutilization of resources, and
efficient use of power.
Modular and integrated business processes, and the applications that support them, are
implemented on a variety of architectures and hosted on heterogeneous IT
infrastructures. Approaches to managing these infrastructures along platform
architecture boundaries must optimize the IT alignment with business objectives. These
approaches must improve responsiveness to change, resource utilization, business
resiliency, and overall cost of ownership. Service providers must offer an approach that
incorporates the ability to manage the IT infrastructure and business application as an
integrated whole.
Implementing the cloud requires an effective strategy that involves hardware
infrastructure services, advanced virtualization, and virtualization management
capability required for IaaS. By implementing automated administrative tasks, dynamic
scaling, optimization, desktop virtualization, and internet connectivity services, they can
achieve a solution to the growing demand problems.
IBM zEnterprise addresses those issues using the heterogeneous cloud to enable a fit-
for-purpose strategy that delivers functions and features that implement infrastructure
hardware as a service. Fit-for-purpose application deployment optimizes the
deployment of workloads by utilizing the best-fit technology for each function and
operating environment. So, workloads run where they run best. The IBM Integrated
Service Management software allows them all to run in the zEnterprise environment
and to be managed from a single point of control. The zEnterprise extends the reach and
strategic role of the mainframe across the enterprise to simplify datacenter management
and to reduce the range of skills necessary to do it. This reduces costs through

Consolidation through virtualization, a first step in improving energy efficiency, offers
the potential for greater efficiencies. Use of the right underlying cloud infrastructure
delivers on that potential.
