Leadership vs. Management
Which of the following best distinguishes “Management” from

A. establishing direction

B. producing results expected by stakeholders
C. communicating the vision of the organization

D. helping people overcome barriers
Leadership vs. Management – Behavioral Aspect
Explain – Before leadership strategies can be used the manager must have
time to execute the work related to the project.
Predict – With the explosive growth of communication and other modern
time distractions, it is difficult to focus on leadership.

Achieve – The project manager has to do it. They have to make time.

A project manager has to think about what they will be doing each day
to demonstrate leadership. Not weekly, but every day!
Leadership
Explain – Leadership can’t be dictated. It is not uncommon for project
managers to totally lack leadership skills.
Predict – Leadership skills will be adopted by those that make time for
them.

Achieve – Leaders become leaders when they recognize the passion that
they have and how they can turn that passion into a successful formula for
the organization.

It’s All About Data
Explain – Without proper project data, it’s difficult to relax and lead an
organization
Predict – Company project management information systems (PMIS) will
probably not be in place or are inadequate.

Achieve – Develop performance metrics to measure vital organizational
metrics. Refer to the metrics often.
Avoidance Plan
Explain – Without a plan, an organization will
wonder aimlessly.
Predict – Too many plans are either shelved or
never make it to the light of day. There just
isn’t enough time.
Achieve – Create a plan for the project, gain
buy-in and refer to the plan often. Leadership
is about having a plan in place before you start.
Recipe for Leadership
Explain – An undisciplined team can not be
treated as adults.
Predict – When the boss is away, the mice
will play.

Achieve – Project management tools must
be developed and “used” and support staff
must be trained and empowered.
Attributes of a Leader
Simple – Can communicate to everyone at all levels
Credible – Trusts others and can be trusted
Predictive – Makes time to keep focused on the big picture

  • 8. Leadership vs. Management – Behavioral Aspect Explain – Before leadership strategies can be used the manager must have time to execute the work related to the project. Predict – With the explosive growth of communication and other modern time distractions, it is difficult to focus on leadership. Achieve – The project manager has to do it. They have to make time. A project manager has to think about what they will be doing each day to demonstrate leadership. Not weekly, but every day!
  • 9. Leadership Explain – Leadership can’t be dictated. It is not uncommon for project managers to totally lack leadership skills. Predict – Leadership skills will be adopted by those that make time for them. Achieve – Leaders become leaders when they recognize the passion that they have and how they can turn that passion into a successful formula for the organization.

It’s All About Data Explain – Without proper project data, it’s difficult to relax and lead an organization Predict – Company project management information systems (PMIS) will probably not be in place or are inadequate. Achieve – Develop performance metrics to measure vital organizational metrics. Refer to the metrics often.
  • 12. Avoidance Plan Explain – Without a plan, an organization will wonder aimlessly. Predict – Too many plans are either shelved or never make it to the light of day. There just isn’t enough time. Achieve – Create a plan for the project, gain buy-in and refer to the plan often. Leadership is about having a plan in place before you start.
  • 13. Recipe for Leadership Explain – An undisciplined team can not be treated as adults. Predict – When the boss is away, the mice will play. Achieve – Project management tools must be developed and “used” and support staff must be trained and empowered.
