We went from physical servers to the cloud and from running VMs in the cloud to running services in the cloud. And although the infrastructure got better and better, we still had to manage everything on our own. This is not the case anymore. Nowadays, we have the “serverless” services. There are many implementations to the idea. The most famous are the AWS Lambda and the Azure Functions. They provide a robust infrastructure for running your code in a scalable manner in a cloud environment. And since the solution is scalable, it is, by definition, a stateless solution. Does this mean that serverless is not a good solution? Is it just a cool gimmick? In this session, you are going to learn how we can manage state in a stateless, serverless environment on Azure, by utilizing Azure Durable Functions and how we can use the eco-system to build entire systems, completely serverless.

Continuous Delivery Pipeline creation for Linux is boring because it is so simple. All tools and approaches are well-known. However, if you are in Windows-land and do not want to pay for licensing cost of enterprise tools, achieving pipeline automation for Windows might be tricky. This talk will give an explanation of a sample CD pipeline using Windows/Cloud/Ansible and other tools. All examples will be shown on Google Cloud-based Windows VMs.

Security process should be integrated with SDLC well to be successful. While many companies have already moved from Waterfall to Agile methodologies security remains behind more often than not. We have demonstrated in our presentation how security can move to agile by utilizing open source tools, customizing them to meet our needs and to implement a continuos security testing using dynamic scanners as well as manual testing. It’s very important also to assure that false positives are not fed to the developers bug tracking systems and to assign a severity for each finding correctly. To make it happen we import all our findings to a security dashboard and review them before exporting to a bug tracking system.

AWS classifies cloud incidents across three domains: Service, Infrastructure and Application. There has been much previous discussion across the Service and Application domains, see for example the excellent SANS DFIR 2022 Keynote. This talk will focus on the unique challenges and opportunities of responding to incidents in the Infrastructure domain. Cloud Service Providers, such as AWS, GCP and Azure, often introduce artifacts of forensic value when developing features for automation and monitoring of resources. Typically, these artifacts are undocumented and exist purely for the provider's own troubleshooting, but they also provide valuable insight to an investigator analyzing malicious activity on a system. Frequently, this insight surpasses that of “provider-supported” forensic data sources. Most of the discourse around performing forensics in the cloud focuses on provider-level logging. While this is undoubtedly useful, practitioners understand that resource-level forensic analysis is crucial when responding to incidents affecting cloud infrastructure. And much of this knowledge remains opaque and undocumented. In this presentation, Chris Doman, CTO of Cado Security will present novel research of undocumented forensic artifacts from cloud service provider specific operating systems and tools. He will provide the audience with an overview of forensic techniques across cloud compute and serverless environments. He will also discuss native operating system artifacts, contrast them with their cloud equivalents and consider their usefulness in the context of the cloud. Attendees can expect to gain a unique perspective on resource-level cloud forensics and should leave the talk with a host of new data sources and knowledge for performing forensic analysis of cloud resources.

Does Behaviour Driven Development have a role in the infrastructure world? Enter Behaviour Driven Infrastructure where systems administrators can apply some simple open source tools and BDD principles to make infrastructure management more powerful, more insightful and deliver more value to their customers. The typical enterprise monitoring and configuration management set-up for a website is: - Is the Apache package installed and the appropriate version? - Is the Apache service running? - Can I connect to the HTTP port and is HTML returned? - Multiply this by a few hundred iterations of hosts and types of services and you’re probably looking at your typical Nagios, Puppet, Cfengine, Hyperic set-up. All this monitoring misses something critical though – we’re not actually monitoring that the service does what it should. Yes, it matters whether Apache is installed, the Apache service is running, and you can connect to HTTP but does this actually prove anything about the availability of the service we’re managing and providing for our customers? Nope… We need to demonstrate more than just a check that says the Apache server is up. We need to demonstrate that the service delivered by that infrastructure was available to our customers AND functioning as intended. Enter Behaviour Driven Infrastructure or BDI which applies the principles of Behavioural Driven Development to the management of infrastructure. In this presentation you’ll learn: - How Behaviour Driven Development works - What makes a behavioural test - How to install and use Cucumber to perform BDI - Practical examples of behavioural tests in Cucumber, and - How to integrate BDI into your work flow and your enterprise monitoring and configuration management frameworks.
