Arsene Wenger
By Ihab Itani & Rafael Demetriou
“I believe the target of anything in life
should be to do it so well that it
becomes an art.”
Introduction
 Nicknamed Le Professeur because of his studious
approach and encyclopedic knowledge of the world
game, Wenger possesses an Economics degree and can
speak seven languages.
 Wenger won the Premier League and FA Cup double in
his first full season in North London.
 He backed that up with another double in 2002
 Created the team of ‘Invincibles’ that remained
unbeaten throughout the entire 2003-04 season and of
course won the league
 One of the long serving managers along with Sir Alex,
Wenger has been in control of Arsenal since 1998.
Wenger’s Strategy
 Wenger has made a name of himself over the years
of bringing in underachieving players at little cost
and turning them into superstars ( Henry, Anelka,
Fabregas, Van Persie).
 Even though the players are young Wenger always
looks for quality.
 Long-term thinking ( trying to balance Arsenal’s
financial situation).
 Even though Arsenal sold big names to save up
money, Wenger always finds a way to have them
fighting for the top four (criticism).
.
Leadership and style
 Wenger leadership style is geared towards
people development, and he achieves the
overall goal. He creates and provides
development opportunities for his players.
 Creation of a unified team.
 Leader of the club not just the team ( Uefa
Financial rules)
 Wenger defines Arsenal ( Arsenal supporters
under the age of 20 don’t know Arsenal without
Wenger).
Taking over
 Wenger forced Arsenal to upgrade their training facilities.
 The medical facilities have been up graded as well. (
Equipment and more qualified staff).
 "Arsene insists that everything is done to the second. He
times everything. If you are doing a certain exercise for 30
seconds, it is 30 seconds not a second more or less."
 Strong diet restrictions. ( Heavy drinking and gambling)
 Despatched “deadwood”.
 One of his imminent projects was to make Arsenal the fore
front of youth- academy.
Style of play
 Wenger likes to deploy 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 and he is a
strong believer in having a strong midfield that
holds plenty of possession.
 His decisions are based on productivity, work
rate, ethical values, fitness, qualities.
Criticism
 7 years without any silverware
 Critics, fans, and former players growing
frustrated-calling for Wenger to either change his
strategies or walk out.
