SPORT IN BRITAIN
PROJECT DONE BY THE 7TH FORM
If the British people are asked to name
their favourite sports, they will name
football, cricket and tennis, though
golf and horse-riding, as well as
boating and rugby, are very popular
either. Britain invented and developed
many of the sports and games which
are now played in different countries.
FOOTBALL
The rules
• You know that football is an outdoor game for
two teams of eleven players. But do you know
that the goalkeeper is the only person who
can touch the ball with his hands, hold it and
throw it? The other players can only kick or
roll the ball. The winner is the team with most
goals at the end of the game.
Ancient games
The Ancient Greeks and Romans are known to
have played many ball games, some of which
involved the use of the feet. The Roman game
harpastum is believed to have been adapted
from a Greek team game known as episkyros
or phaininda, which is mentioned by a Greek
playwright, Antiphanes (388–311 BC) .
History of game
Football is a wonderful game! It was played in one form or another
more than a hundred years ago. First it was a very rude and hard
game. There were no rules. Footballers have been playing with
proper rules only since 1863. That year the Football Association (FA
in short) was started. Its first job was to get a set of rules for all
teams. The modern game was introduced to other countries by
British soldiers, seamen and businessmen. the greatest football
competition in Britain is the FA Cup. The first competition was
organized in the middle of the 19th century.
They are held every May .

TENNIS
The rules
• It is played on a rectangular court by either two players
(singles) or four (doubles).
• Players stand on opposite sides of a net and use a
stringed racket to hit a ball back and forth to each
other.
• Each player has a maximum of one bounce after it has
been hit by their opponent to return the ball over the
net and within the boundaries of the court. When a
player fails to do any of these three things, their
opponent wins a point. The first person to win six
games wins a set, but only if they are leading by two
clear games.
History
Tennis, or lawn tennis, is another popular game in
Britain. It was first played in England in 1872. The
first Wimbledon tennis championship was in
1877. At first, it was all-English. Now it is
international, and the last English champion was
Fred Perry in 1936. Nowadays every summer in
June, the British hold this famous International
Tennis Championship at Wimbledon, near
London. The youngest player at Wimbledon was
Kathy Rinaldi in 1981: she was only 14.

CRICKET
The Basic Rules of Cricket
• Cricket is played with two teams of eleven, with two
referees on an oval shaped field. A cricket bat is oblong
shaped with a narrow handle. In the middle of the field
is what is known as a pitch.
• A pitch is a hard, flat strip of dry ground around 18
meters long. Two batsman are at the pitch at a time,
both at different ends, with one facing the delivery of
the ball from the bowler.
• Teams score by getting runs. A run is completed when
a batsman hits the ball and then runs to the other end
of the cricket pitch, getting past the crease. The non
striking batsman has to run to the opposite end as well.
Cricket is an English
game. It is a difficult
game and is loved by
many people, but
others are bored by it.
Some games go on for
five days. It is played in
many countries which
were once a part of
the British Empire, but
nowhere else.
