Overview
From a business perspective, mobile devices are changing the way we operate.
It is also changing the way our clients and customers expect to interact with us.
The outline below is a brief “mobile concepts” session I recently held with a
management team, and summarizes basic considerations for using content in a
mobile environment and on the iPad.
Talking Points / Observations
1.
“Common iPad business tasks” document – tap this link to access
Google spreadsheet document
2.
Discussed concept of a business “network” drive vs. Goodreader
storage
a. A network drive is not local on your iPad; GoodReader (or another
content management app) is local and allows markups to
documents, etc. (if in PDF format).

b. Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. are “cloud” services that can be
connected to GoodReader
3.
Reviewed using/editing MS office documents and PDF on the iPad
a. iWorks suite is excellent for managing basic MS Office documents
i. Numbers, Pages and KeyNote
ii. Can export PDF’s from these apps
b. QuickOffice HD, CloudOn, OnLive are other options
4.
When clients or customers email documents, how do we
bookmark, make comments
a. More efficient to move mark up process to iPad and perform it
digitally
b. GoodReader, or other PDF annotation app is ideal for this process
c. Use a stylus for handwriting on documents
5.
Ease of presentations on the ipad?
a. Presentations on iPad
i. PDF in GoodReader (my preferred method – allows me to mark
up document.
ii. Powerpoint on device using KeyNote app
iii. Powerpoint on device using SlideShark app
6.
How would you recommend presenting information from the iPad?
a. Present to larger screen
i. AppleTV
ii. Projector connected to iPad – adaptors needed
b. Share iPad (breakfast meetings, small session meetings)
i. Or transfer digital document to their device and each manage
their own device (the user can then make notes, etc.)

7.
Structuring access to important documents, other content, or client
info
a. Apply 80/20 rule. Content you use 80% of the time is approximately
20% of the files – store that locally on the iPad
b. Non-critical information can be stored in cloud service (Box.com)
Considerations
1.
2.
Content on the iPad needs to be “optimized” for the mobile device
a. Most current documents transferred to the iPad “as is” will not be very
useful
b. PDF’s
i. Use bookmarks
ii. Provide active hyperlinks to useful resources
iii. Include active links for email addresses and phone numbers
Ask how can I leverage this device; but, more importantly, how can I
leverage it to enhance client impact (and meet/exceed their
expectations)
