Regional Scrum Gathering® India 2014 was conducted at Trident hotel, Hyderabad on 12th July 2014. Sivaram Athmakuri spoke on Baby steps to become Agile (for Bigger Organizations). Scrum is the most popular agile framework and practised by many companies. Whether it is an Organisation or Person, they get easily attracted by Scrum concepts afterthey understand the underlying concepts. Challenge is whether they can take these concepts and convince management in implementing full Scrum. Size of the Organisation matters in taking such crucial decisions. If Organisations are smaller (like Horse), they can move/change as they like. If organisation is huge/big (like Elephants), they can't move so easily... even if they want to move. Recent State of Scrum mentions that • 13% of those who started with Waterfall now use Scrum exclusively • Most ended up with a mix of Waterfall and Scrum • 8% went back to Waterfall This clearly says 87% of companies have challenges in using Scrum exclusively. BiggerOrganisations Agile Journey can be as mentioned below Water fall --> DSDM--->Scrum Dynamic systems development method (DSDM) is an agile project delivery framework, primarily used as a software development method. First released in 1994, DSDM originally sought to provide some discipline to the rapid application development (RAD) method. In 2007 DSDM became a generic approach to project management and solution delivery. DSDM is an iterative and incremental approach that embraces principles of Agile development, including continuous user/customer involvement. Scrum is an iterative and incremental agile software development framework for managing software projects and product or application development. It defines "a flexible, holistic product development strategy where a development team works as a unit to reach a common goal" My presentation covered • What is Scrum (High Level) • What is DSDM (Detailed) • Evaluate Project needs (whether needs Agile or not) • Evaluate Customer (whether suits for Agile or not) • Execute few Projects in DSDM • Based on Experience, Start Scrum Projects (by taking teams who executed using DSDM)

In traditionally planned projects – we typically try and understand all of the requirements up front in order to estimate cost and schedule. We then aggressively managed changes to requirements so we could deliver on our cost and schedule estimates. For agile we assume date is fixed and cost is also fixed (can only add so many developers to a project without slowing everything down) and we focus on delivering the most valuable requirements or Features. We don’t plan for too much at a time. We don’t want to plan too far ahead because it is wasted effort if we don’t actually do the work on those features. We want to add more detail, incrementally as we get closer to execution.

But, Stefano Rizzo asks: What if there are thousands of users with good ideas dispersed around the globe and around the clock? Can a Product Owner really represent all their interests? At Polarion, Stefano says they have used social media to successfully couple agile methods with more traditional requirements elicitation approaches. After hosting some user conferences, they created a community of users, project managers, and developers. Soliciting and nurturing their discussions regarding the product has created a lot of fuel for requirements definition and refinement process. Key benefits include the involvement of more stakeholders, a better company reputation, and the ability to harvest unusual requirements and unsolicited feedback that are helpful for the release strategy and product usability.

Traditionally, businesses like banking and telecom focused high on standardization and national regulation. The development lead times were long. Consequently, the solution providers developed capabilities to influence standards, develop products and interact with the end-service providers. In October 2009, I presented a well-received session entitled An Agile Engineering Environment (in 59 Minutes or Less) at an Agile conference in Chengdu, China. From 2009 – 2015 the environment presented in that session remained fundamentally unchanged as our primary internal development environment. By 2015, however, we began seeing the emergence of new tools which build upon the basic premises of that environment, but enable an even more robust environment to be established even more quickly and independently than the 59-minute environment realized in the 2009 session. In this session, we will briefly introduce the original configuration and see how modern tooling and techniques enable the improved environment to be established in a fraction of the time, enabling even greater agility in our engineering environment.

For geo-distributed teams that are in the “Forming”, and even, “Norming” stages, there is perceived chaos while envisioning and building v1 products. An Agile mindset believes that diverse teams with complementary skills are best equipped to thrive in today’s business environments. Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
