New – Arlington County Fair
The 2014 Arlington County Fair runs from Aug. 6-10 and is located just outside the
Hatfield Gate at the Thomas Jefferson Community Center, 3501 Second Street South,
Arlington, VA 22204. Admission is free, and shuttle service is provided from locations

New – Adjutant General’s Corps group to meet
The Potomac Chapter of the Adjutant General's Corp Regimental Association will
meet Aug. 20 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Sine Irish Pub on Pentagon Row (1301 South Joyce
Street, Arlington) for fellowship. The Chapter will provide light refreshments, and other
items can be ordered from the menu at the pub. Attendees may come in duty uniform
or civilian casual wear.

New – Army Substance Abuse Program training
Army Substance Abuse Program training will be provided Aug. 6 and 12 from 1 to 3
p.m. in Bldg. 230 on the Fort Myer portion of the joint base. Suicide prevention training
will be held Aug. 13 from 1 to 2 p.m. in Bldg. 230 on the Fort Myer portion of the joint

2. New – Feds Feed Families
Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall personnel support the Agriculture Department’s
annual Feds Feed Families food drive.
The campaign, which runs through August, is a voluntary effort undertaken by
federal employees, who bring nonperishable food items to their offices for distribution
to local food banks.
Bring your donations to several places on the Fort Myer portion of the joint base:
The Fitness Center, the Exchange, Bldg. 203, Bldg. 205 and Bldg. 59.
On the Fort McNair portion of the joint base, bring non-perishable food items to
Bldg. 39, the Shoppette, the State Department Federal Credit Union, Marshall Hall
(Bldg. 62) and Lincoln Hall (Bldg. 64).

Among the items on the “most-needed” list are low-sodium or no salt canned
vegetables, canned proteins (tuna, salmon, chicken, beans), canned fruits and soups,
condiments, multigrain cereals, individually packaged snacks and crackers, peanut
butter, brown and white rice and pasta. Families also need 100 percent fruit juices,
paper products, cleaning supplies and hygiene items – all the things any family needs.

August is National Immunization and Influenza Awareness Month. Vaccination
for influenza is the most important step you can take in the next few months to ensure
you are healthy this coming flu season. They are also vital in improving the health of
our Soldiers, Families and Retirees.
Army Medicine continues to play an important role in developing vaccines.
Our primary focus in developing vaccines has been to help keep our Soldiers safe from
disease when they deploy, thus ensuring a Ready and Healthy Force.
Command Sgt. Maj. Donna Brock and I thank all of you who have contributed to
this work to keep us healthy and for the contributions you will make tomorrow.
Finally, catching the flu can be extremely painful and uncomfortable. Remind

Résumé Writing Class Offered
The Career Resource Management Center, in Bldg. 29 on the Henderson Hall
portion of Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, offers “Résumé Writing 101: Private Sector
Résumé Tips & Marketable Formats” Wednesday, August 6, 9 – 11 a.m. This workshop
will assist in drafting a private sector résumé. Learn how to draft targeted résumés and
understand the key components needed to get selected for the right position. The
following topics will be covered: acceptable formats and design, prioritizing and

Virginia DMV to Go to visit JBM-HH Aug. 13
JBM-HH ACAP is sponsoring the DMV to Go mobile unit Aug. 13 from 9 a.m. to

Overture Concert to be held Aug. 23
Come enjoy this end of summer concert spectacular on historic Summerall Field

Fire safety reminder
The use of charcoal barbeque grills and gas fired grills on decks, balconies,
covered parking areas, patios, or under any building overhang is prohibited by the Joint
Base Myer-Henderson Hall Fire Department. All grills must be used a minimum of 15
feet from any building structure and must not block any walk ways/pathways. The
storage of fuel bottles from the gas fired grills inside any structure or on balconies is
prohibited. Charcoal grills may be stored on porches; decks, balconies and patios
provided the charcoal is completely extinguished and cold. For more information, call

Two civilian employees need annual leave assist
A Directorate of Public Works (planning division) employee, Myrtle Bowen, and a
Directorate of Resource Management (budge office) employee, Mary Jones Williams,
are approved recipients of the civilian personnel annual leave donor program. Due to
medical issues, they have exhausted both sick and annual leave.
Department of the Army civilian employees who would like to donate annual leave
to Williams must fill out Form OPM 630A, "Request to Donate Annual Leave to Leave
Recipient Under the Voluntary Leave Transfer Program (Within Agency)" at
www.opm.gov/forms/pdf_fill/opm630a.pdf.
If you are a federal government civilian employee outside the Department of the
Army and want to donate annual leave to Williams, you must complete OPM 630B,
"Request to Donate Annual Leave to Leave Recipient Under the Voluntary Leave

Family Readiness
New – Learn how to be a good babysitter
Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation’s Child and Youth Services is
hosting a 4-H Teen Babysitters program Monday, Aug. 11 through Friday, Aug. 15
from 1 to 4 p.m. each day at Cody Child Development Center on the Fort Myer portion
of the joint base.
6. Age requirement is 12 to 18 years. All military and Department of Defense civilian
dependents are eligible to take the class. There are 17 slots available; the class is free.

New – Triple P parenting classes
This seminar will cover being Confident, being socially skilled, planning ahead, keeping
commitments, keeping in touch, and taking care of others. The class is held Aug. 25

ACS Play Morning (Outdoor)
This playgroup is for preschool age children to provide time for play, physical

Relationship Enrichment: Healthy Communication

Baby Stages
This class will provide an overview of developmental milestones for children

“Boots to Business”
A “Boots to Business” workshop for aspiring military-to-civilian entrepreneurs is
offered Monday – Tuesday, August 11 – 12, 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., in Bldg. 29, Rm. 104, on
the Henderson Hall portion of Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall. This workshop
provides information on self-employment, learning to evaluate applicable skills and
personality traits needed for self-employment, identifying types of business ownership,
and researching the business market and competition, understanding the importance of

EFMP Information Session: Yoga Therapy
The MCCS Exceptional Family Member Program will host information sessions
on Yoga Therapy for Children with Special Needs. Sessions are in the Cpl. Terry L.
Smith Gymnasium. Two sessions are planned: on August 21, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., for
parents and service providers of children ages 5 – 11; and on Thursday, September 18,
11 a.m. – 1 p.m., for parents and service providers of children ages 12 - 18. Wear

GAT 2.0 for Spouses
Army spouses have access to the Global Assessment Tool (GAT 2.0) -- a
confidential, online self-assessment tool that measures the user's level of resilience,
overall health and well-being.
After completing the GAT 2.0, the spouse receives an assessment in each of the
five dimensions of strength: social, emotional, spiritual, family and physical, and an
assessment in the three elements of the Performance Triad -- sleep, activity and nutrition.
8. The GAT 2.0 arms Army spouses with the tools they need to stay strong throughout

MCCS Offers New Community Counseling Program
The new Community Counseling Program is designed to provide increased
access to counseling for Marines, sailors, and their families, and to focus on screening,
prevention, and intervention of stressors and problems to improve readiness and
quality of life. We offer individual, couple, family, child, and group counseling services.
All counselors are independently licensed and credentialed professionals who can work
with you to develop a plan and find solutions to meet your needs and help you

ACAP supports spouses in transition
Army Career and Alumni Program offers services to the spouses of military
personnel who are transitioning: both retiring or ETSing (Expiration of Term in Service).
Some of the services offered to transitioning spouses include one-on-one assistance
with a resume, a Veterans Affairs benefits briefing, Department of Labor Employment
Workshop (includes the interview process, dress for success, building a resume, salary
negotiation) and financial planning.
More services include classes on home buying, credit scores, investing, TRICARE,
finding and applying for federal jobs and much more.

Anger Management workshops offered
Marine & Family Programs offers anger management workshops weekly,
Wednesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. The workshops are designed to teach eight tools for
managing anger. Participants may start at any time, but must attend all eight sessions to
receive a certificate of completion.
Sessions are in Building 12’s conference room on the Henderson Hall portion of the
joint base. The workshops are open to active duty personnel, their family members, and

Stress workshops held Tuesdays
Marine & Family Programs offers workshops on coping with work and family stress
on an ongoing basis. The 12-session, evidence-based series, designed to teach strategies
for dealing with stressors, is held Tuesdays, from 2:30 to 4 p.m., in Bldg. 12’s conference
room on the Henderson Hall portion of the joint base. Topics include identifying
9. stressors, deep breathing and muscle relaxation, assertive communication, changing
yourself talk, eating right, exercise and developing a personal stress management plan.
The workshops are open to active duty personnel, their family members and military
retirees.

Traffic, Roads and Grounds
New – Columbia Pike Interchange
Virginia Department of Transportation has elected to keep the right lane of
eastbound Columbia Pike closed in the vicinity of S. Quinn Street from 9 a.m. each day
until 6 a.m. the following day until Aug. 8.
VDOT will also close the entrance to S. Quinn Street from Columbia Pike to all
traffic on Aug. 6-7 to expedite the installation of a new Arlington County sanitary sewer
manhole and pipe. Though the work will proceed from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day, the S.
Quinn Street intersection will remain closed in the overnight hours of Aug. 6.
By 9 p.m. on Aug. 7, the S. Quinn Street intersection will be reopened. We
apologize in advance for any inconvenience this work may cause.
On Aug. 6-7, no vehicular traffic will be permitted to enter or exit S. Quinn Street
from Columbia Pike. The most direct route will either be through S. Rolfe Street or S.
Queen Street and adjoining side streets. During the S. Quinn Street closure, an
Arlington County police officer will assist in directing vehicles out at S. Rolfe Street
during daytime hours.
Major road closures in the District through Aug. 7
Please be advised that portions of Main Ave. outside of the Fort Lesley J. McNair
portion of the joint base will have road closures during the 2014 U.S. Africa Leaders
Summit scheduled for Aug 4-7 in Washington, D.C.

Summerall parking lot closed Aug. 11-12
Summerall parking lot on the Fort Myer portion of the joint base will be closed Aug.
11 at 9 p.m. and will reopen at the completion of a ceremony to take place at Summerall
Field Aug. 12. All cars in the parking lot after the lot has been closed are subject to

10. Barrier Maintenance
There will be scheduled preventive maintenance on the gate barriers on the Fort
Myer and Fort McNair portions of JBM-HH Aug. 5 through 7. Traffic interference is
