The system(Zon System) was reading okay as we started removing and adding fuel to 
the truck tank, then the Generator tank. The minute we started adding fuel(+100liters) 
from the supplier, the differences started appearing.

The standard gauge tank/metrologic tool on the left showed that the fuel dispenser 
was faulty(difference of 280ml). We filled the tank on the right and again, the 
calibrated tank(cal) showed that the fuel dispenser displayed 20 liters added yet on 
the tank it was more than 1.5liters less(supl)!! Look at the below excerpts from the

CONCLUSION/RECOMENDATION 
Every Drop Counts – Fuel Calibration 
1. With the increasing pressures of fuel costs, it’s even more important to make every 
litre count. Does your diesel pump actually issue what it records? 
A few examples .... 
Filled a 20L 'Spectre" red jerrycan, which has a number of 'guide' calibrations moulded 
into the opaque plastic. I stopped at the top '20L' line and was amazed when I turned 
to see the fuel bowser displaying 27 Litres!!! The pump was definitely zeroed prior to 
starting by the console operator. When I questioned the accuracy and wanted to know 
when the pump was last checked for calibration - I simply got a blank stare from the 
junior console operator. I had to pay for 27 litres! 
The 'Sub' tank in our Nissan Patrol is shown as 30L in the vehicle specs. Most times it 
'clicks' of at 30.2 to 30.6 litres to fill the tank. There have been many instances where 
the bowser indicates figures up to 36 Litres!

With the increasing pressures of fuel costs, it’s even more important to make every 
litre count. 
Does your diesel pump actually issue what it records? 
With manual figures or fuel management systems, the figures will only be as good as 
the pump fitted.
CONCLUSION/RECOMENDATION 
2. ……… Varying ranges of equipment, from flowmeters (accuracy +/- 2%) to calibrated meters 
(+/- 0.5%), W&M’s equipment, direct drive or air separated units (alleviating air), all effect how 
accurate the recording shows. The pump meter gives a measure of fuel and drives the register to 
record fuel issued. Regular checks are needed to ensure ‘true’ figures are recorded. Weights and 
Measures calibrated measures are used to ‘test a measure’ against fuel drawn. A 20L certified 
measure checked against a registered 20L, enables a millimetre scale reading of plus /minus to be 
checked against ‘strike’ measure. Within +/- 50ml on 20L, is to W&M tolerances. Recalibration is 
required outside this. 
Prudent regular maintenance, recommended every six months, enables the fuel calibration to be 
kept as accurate as possible. 
3. We used the tank on the right twice to remove 40liters and the system showed exactly that. 
We returned it in and again our system showed the same. In terms of accuracy of our system, this 
are the facts: The Zon Control application & fuel tracking unit has a FUEL ALGORITHM plus the 
Fuel Sensors we use, uses a filtering algorithm Fuelmetrix to calculate the exact level of the fuel 
in the fuel tank. This algorithm provides reliable fuel level calculations even in extreme operating 
conditions. 
4. I would advise you change your fuel supplier or where you fuel . The supplier himself admitted 
their pumps to be faulty . Even if you don’t buy our system and change your fuel provider, how 
sure are you that where you go to fuel have calibrated their petrol station pumps when you have 
nothing to check & prove that? Our system doesn't only protect you internally but externally as 
well. “How safe is your fuel?”
