3. 1. In two paragraphs, relate factual information about the version of Carrie produced in 1976
and the new version in 2013. Give details of the director, release date, distributor, budget
and box office takings. Describe the plot and cast briefly
The original film, Carrie was produced in 1976. The director of the film was Brian De Palma. The storyline is
about a young, shy 17 year old girl called Carrie who discovers she has telekinesis and gets pushed to the limit
on the night of her school's prom by a humiliating prank. The film turned out to be very successful as it took a
total amount of 33,800,000. The film was so popular and successful that the actors in the film became so well
known that it boosted their career and suddenly everyone knew their names.
The remake of the film was made in 2013 and was directed by Kimberly Peirce. Chloe Grace Moretz starred as
Carrie because she was popular in the film industry at the time to their target audience. Even with the A-List
actress starring as the main role, it wasn't as successful as the original film with box office takings of
16,101,552.
2. Give Kimberley Peirce’s reasons for remaking Carrie. Define the target audience for the film.
I think that Kimberly Peirce decided to remake the film because there is a huge advance in technology since
1976. This is the reason for most films to produce remakes of older films. The audience would find the new use
of technology like CGI much more fascinating than the effects used in the original Carrie which would make the
remake overall better than the original.
I also think that the director decided to remake the film because she could cast actors that are a hundred
times more popular now than the cast were when the original film was created. This gave the film a better
chance of being successful as the older generation would want to watch the film to compare it to the 1976
version, and the younger generation would want to watch it because actors like Chloe Moretz plays the
leading role. Consequently, The newer version of Carrie had a better chance of becoming more successful than
the original.
3. Explain how some of Kimberley Pierce’s reasons for remaking Carrie could be to do with
trends, particularly amongst the film’s target audience
Another reason why the director decided to remake Carrie could also be to do with the recent trend of horror
movies. Recently, more and more people have been interested in horror films. This is because the audience
love to be scared and being able to control it within their own surroundings, whether its location or with
friends and family.
4. Consider the companies responsible for the making of both films. What is their relationship?
Describe the relationship and state why this is a financial factor.
There were two different distributors for both Carrie films. The 1976 version was distributed by United Artists
whereas the 2013 version was distributed by Screen Gems. The relationship between both of these companies
is that they have both the production companies for the Carrie films. The 2013 remake was made with Screen
Gems because there has been new advancements in technology since 1976 therefore the film could be made
with better special effects to appeal to both primary and secondary audience. Because there would be an
obvious difference in films, both companies would maximise their profits because the audience would pay to
watch both films to compare them each.
4. 5. Consider the products that tie in with the release of Carrie and give details of:
How synergy is a factor in the remake of the film
How the films soundtrack will appeal to the target audience (try to find if any artists
have released tracks individually to coincide with the release)
Synergy is important for any kind of film. It is another way to maximise profits as merchandise can be sold that
relates to the film. In this case, T-shirts, posters and toys in relation to the Carrie films could be sold in shop
which creates more profit for the film and it also promotes. If someone was to buy a Carrie T-Shirt, somebody
would wear it where other people will be able to see it which spreads the word of the film to different people
and therefore promotes the film. The biggest form of synergy for the Carrie films is the Stephan King novel that
re-wrote his novel to fit the film. The company would also then put images of the film with the book therefore
people can relate to what they have just watched.
Why have producers of the Carrie remake chosen Chloe Moretz to play the lead role?
Because it then appeals to two different age groups; young adults and adults. This is because Chloe
Moretz is popular within young adults from other films she has featured in, therefore the film will
appeal to young adults. Adults will also be appealed to the film because they will remember and
have watched the older film and will want to watch the remake.
