This document provides a history of the development of gaming from the 1960s to present. It describes the earliest computer games in the 1960s, the rise of video arcade games in the 1970s, the beginning of home console and PC gaming in the 1980s and 1990s, and the major consoles and handhelds of each generation including Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox through the 2000s and 2010s. Key events included the first video game in 1961, the first coin-operated arcade game in 1972, and the introduction of best-selling franchises like Mario, Gran Turismo and Halo.

2011.

Consoles
• Handheld
games

first
introduced

1970s.

first
handheld

Microvision,
which
was
released

1979.

handheld

Game
Boy,
released
in
1989.
• Since
then,
the
Game
Boy
has
become
a
series
of
different
consoles,
developing

years.
