How to set up your science notebook

Editor's Notes

  1. Scientist use notebooks in daily work and conversations
  2. Lewis and Clark explored the Western U.S. What kinds of things did they record? Measurements Observations and other information Drew pictures of what they saw
  3. Thomas Edison was an important inventor. What did he record? Wrote down ideas Drew sketches of new ideas
  4. Inventor, scientist, artist
  5. Franklin invented this clock, recorded and shared his ideas with others through his notebook – he never built it himself James Ferguson reviewed Franklin’s notebook to build a working model of the clock Students can share ideas with others using their notebooks
  6. Here is how we are going to set up our notebook You need liquid glue – carefully putting dots of glue to stick to the paper (liquid glue adheres more permanently than glue sticks)
  7. Use a “sample” notebook when introducing, if you have one
  8. This picture is from the guidelines for older students Yours may have pictures instead Glue it on top of the blank part of the Starters and prompts page
  9. Note – can also personalize covers – on cover can use markers…but, *** Make this a rule: you need to use crayons or map pencils in rest of notebook
  10. “ Walk through” Table of Contents with them Bookmarking device – like we used to do with assignment spirals Note this one is drawn on…have also seen students put Date outside pink border, and then use visible pink border from other side of page to draw page number line
  11. Tell students where you want to number pages – top or bottom on the outside corner Should start each new entry on the top of the next blank page This is not an interactive notebook – so do not need to leave adjacent page blank Most people do write on front and back of pages Students may use different numbers of pages for their entries…so clearly need T of Contents
  12. Organizational Tools – explicitly teach – using lists, charts, tables, graphs Emphasize here that you must allow time for student to have time to write – time for reflection. This is a mini-version of the KLEW Chart: students can use it to construct their own list from class discussion
  13. Although the learning changes, the way a student uses the notebook will remain the same all year
  14. Although this is from an older student, we may also glue in some printed charts and then write in them. You might make your own T charts or graphs
  15. Even though this example is from an older student, we may also read things in science and then have you make personal notes in your notebook We may work on summarizing in our Science notebooks
  16. ***Can cut and paste things – I will define the rules on what is and is not allowed TEACHER NOTE: TOOL: best to use packing tape to totally cover … safety and issues of molding would have to be looked at
