5. When mediation is not suitable
Mediation is not suitable in the following situations:
l where there are issues of domestic violence or child protection
l where one or both parties do not cooperate with full financial
disclosure
l whenever parties are not committed to the mediation process
l when one party loses faith in the mediator's impartiality

6. How long does mediation take?
On average 3-4 sessions are needed for cases
involving property and finance, and 1-3 for
those involving children. First information
and assessment meeting (MIAM) lasts
approximately 1 hour, the following
mediation sessions last 1 - 1½ hours.

take anywhere from several months to

7. How much does it cost?

8. Summaries and form FM1
Memorandum of Understanding and Financial Summary are two separate documents,
drafted by a family mediator upon the successful completion of mediation meetings,
which contain the matters and resolutions achieved, and which will act as the basis on
which solicitor will draft legally binding court orders. A financial summary can be
drafted at the start of the mediation process to document financial disclosure.
The Family Mediation Information and Assessment Form FM1 is compulsory in all family
proceedings (with some exceptions) to which the Practice Direction 3A applies. This
form is issued by mediator and should be filed with any application made to the court.

9. Is mediation stressful?

10. Who is the mediator?
Jen Rumble MNCS(Acc) DipCouns is professionally
qualified as a family mediator with the ADR Group, a
member of the Family Mediation Council, to the
standards approved by the Law Society and the Bar
Council. Jen mediates on all issues in separation and
divorce - arrangements for children and all matters
concerning family finance. She comes from a
professional background in psychotherapeutic
practice and brings to mediation her considerable
experience in working with distressed couples and
families, conflict and powerful emotions. Apart from
English she speaks Russian and Ukrainian fluently,
and has experience in working through interpreters.
She is a full member of the ADR Group and the
Family Mediators Association (FMA).
