The document discusses the reasons for creating a survey instrument for teachers at Whittier Elementary School. The survey aims to assess how teachers are using technology to teach math and reading to a diverse student population with many English language learners and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Specifically, the survey wants to find out the technologies used, if they are adequate for English learners, and teachers' opinions on providing students technology for home use. The survey also addresses why specific technology areas like math and reading software were chosen, since test scores at the school rank low. Finally, the document discusses how the survey addresses ISTE standards around facilitating student learning with technology, using technology for assessments, promoting digital citizenship, and engaging teachers in professional growth regarding

Jenn Cullen's Reasons For A Survey Instrument
1. My reasons for a Survey Instrument
How was this instrument tailored for the unique needs of your school?
I choose to write a survey for the teachers at Whittier Elementary School where I
did my student teaching. This school has a high population of students who come
from a low socio-economic background. Many students at the school are also
English language learners. First, I wanted to find out how teachers are using
technology in their classroom to teach math and reading to such a diverse
student population. Second, I wanted to find out if teachers are providing
adequate technology geared toward their English language learners. Finally, I
wanted to find out how the teachers feel about providing the students with
technology that they could use beyond the classroom, such as home use
laptops. To make the surveying process as convenient as possible, I would make
a paper version and online version of the survey so teachers and administrators
could fill them out at work or at home.
Why did you choose specific technology areas to assess in the survey? Compared
to all other schools in the Boise School District, Whittier Elementary always ranks
near the very bottom for academic test scores. First, I wanted to find out what
technology programs the school is currently using to teach reading and math.
Secondly, I want to find out if administrators and teachers at the school would be
willing to implement new, research-based math and reading software that have
been proven to improve math and reading abilities in elementary students. Third,
since the school has a high population of low income students I wanted to know if
scores would improve if students were provided pc's or laptops to use at home.
How does your survey address ISTE standards?
In my survey I hope to address the following ISTE standards:
1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
2. a. If Whittier School was provided with new, research-based, technologies that
are proven to improve student reading and math abilities would their test scores
increase?
2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
a. Are teachers using technology in their classrooms that will provide diverse
learning experiences for their diverse learning population?
b. Are teachers using technology in their classroom to assess student learning
and chart student progress?
3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
a. How can administrators and teachers partner with parents to provide students
with software and hardware that will increase their math and reading abilities at
home?
4. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility
a. Are teachers providing adequate technologies for both traditional and ELL
students in their classroom?
5. Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership
a. Are teachers willing to use new technologies in the classroom?
b. Are teachers willing to get the training needed to implement new
technology in the classroom?
