Editor's Notes
My name is Jennifer Brady and I am here to speak to you today about how utilizing the right managerial skills can lead you to become a better leader for your team. It will encourage strength amongst your group and lead you to success within your business.
I would like to ask you all to take a few moments and think back throughout your years of examples where you may have had a manager or leader who was intolerable. I’m sure there were a few flashbacks in your mind and some of you are most likely thinking wow I hated that job. Are you able to see how the negativity from this individual affected your work?
Now I want you all to think back to a time or times when you had a positive, strong leader guiding you. How much easier was it to get your work done. Didn’t you enjoy the work and office atmosphere much better? It is nice to feel appreciated by your colleagues and have that positive attitude. When everyone can work together in a professional and respectful manner it creates a foundation for success.
Every problem is an opportunity being mishandled. If you are able to execute the right skills you can eliminate most problems for you and your team. You must be able to face the problem head on and guide your team in the right direction. This is one quality that will make you a better, stronger leader.
Throughout the years I personally have had the chance to work with some great leaders and some not so great leaders. I have taken two courses; introduction to management and leadership and organizational behavior where I learned the do’s and do not’s of how to become a good leader and I also have four years of experience over seeing seven girls who worked under my direction at a clothing apparel company. Also I have had the chance to interview some of the best leader’s within the sporting industry. With that being said I would like to share with you some great skills I have learned to help you all become great leaders.
It is important to always learn with the mindset of having to teach what you learn to others. You will need to be able to effectively communicate to your employees or team members the information or tasks that are put forth. Not only is it important to communicate effectively but it is also important to be able to be a good listener. Listening to others helps you and helps your group. Sometimes there are ideas you may not think of but another individual has. Always remember there is no “I” in “Team”.
The way you treat people is a barometer to everyone on your team. Treating the individuals on your team with respect is a strong leadership skill. Just because you may have a higher position does not mean you are to mistreat people. If You want your team to be courteous, helpful and respectful to others you must then treat your team that way.
A strong leader must have patience and flexibility. Being a leader means you are leading other’s to a goal. You must be able to understand the people you are leading and be flexible with them so that they in turn can understand what is expected of them from you. They may seem like opposite ends of the spectrum, however, they are critical areas for future success.
You want to encourage your team to be creative, to provide ideas and feedback. Everyone has something to add to the project to make it bigger and better. Allow your team to think for themselves and to stretch their limits within the grasp of their abilities.
As a leader you want people to admire, you want them to look up to you and exemplify the same qualities that you have as a strong leader. Idealized influence is a main characteristic to being a good leader. You yourself must be an example of greatness and always keep a positive attitude.
Leaders must be able to continue to successfully lead through changes. One must be able to adapt to the ever changing world. In today’s world the market places are forever changing. New and better business models seem to rise all the time. You must be able to grasp these new changes and realize how you can apply this to your group.
No one wants to look for guidance from someone who does not care about the group’s goals. So you as a leader must do what you love and love what you do so that other’s can feel the same way.
Now lets just go over the key traits to a successful leader. Trait #1. Listen and Communicate Effectively.
