- Silk-screening, is a printing technique that uses a porous mesh screen that has an ink blocking stencil transferred onto it. - Silk-screening first emerged in the Japanese sung dynasty. Then moving west in 1907 in England it was first patent by Samuel Simon who created the fist press system. In 1914 silk-screening developed in America when a second patent was issued for John Pilsworth multi-color silk-screening pres. - A screen is what the design of the product is printed on. Squeegee’s are used to transfer ink to material. Conveyor Dryer is used to dry Ink and Flash Dryers are for more the one color jobs. A press like in the picture above is the unit that all material is printed on. Press system’s can range form a couple hundred dollars to thousands of dollars. A pressure washer is used to remove stenciling from the screen and an air dryer is used to dry the screen. Vinly plotters are used to print out designs. - A pressure washer is used to remove stenciling from the screen. They are very efficient because you can control the amount of pressure that is used on the screen. Pressure washer also do not take up a lot of space depending on the area they are used and the type of washer. Most importantly they are affordable. A washer specifically for screens can cost thousands of dollars compared to a pressure washer that can cost hundreds.
- Most exposure units are used to burn through the screens. Exposure units have set timers for 2 minutes of lighting to burn through the screens. They are also like an updated versions of how photography was developed in the past. This works by the light hitting a stencil. - Usually it takes 15-20 minutes for screens to dry before being able to print onto products. There are custom made air drying supplies specifically for screens. - Ink is used for the printing onto material. Emulsion is used for blocking the ink and creating space to let the ink through. Tracing paper is used to transfer designs onto screens with an exposure unit. Tape is used for the sides of the screen that have not been covered with emulsion. - Ink come in various types. There is ink that is used on clothing and can be air dried or heat dried. Most ink is heat dried and is run through an conveyer dryer. If a product has more the one color then the ink will be dried under a flash dryer first before going through a conveyer dryer. Emulsion is used for blocking the ink on the screen. There are different types of emulsion. One is call silicone emulsion which is predominantly used in photography. In silk-screening chromeblu emulsion is used.
- Putting a lot of pressure on the screen when transferring ink onto the shirt is a good technique to use. It reassures that the ink will be printed clearly onto the shirt. The work area should a cool because of the heat machines used, and it is easy for your work space to become unbearable because of the heat and movement. When Silk-screening the main elements of design that you use are line, shape, size and color. In order to design anything to be silk-screened you need to know the size and shape of the product in order to design a size and shape to fit the product.
