This is a draft curriculum for a five day workshop on strategy for nonprofit organizations (also uploaded by National Arts Strategies). I was looking to address two critical design questions: 1) Strategy has its roots in competition so how can we connect a strategy conversation to a nonprofit's first focus on creating value for its community? And 2) What is a useful workshop for staff at all levels, some of whom may be involved in formal strategic planning activities and many of whom will not? Our approach was to frame all conversations around the question, “How can you create the most value?” and focus on “strategic thinking” rather than strategic planning.
