know-how online and in networks

4. STAND OUT WHEN LOOKING FOR WORK
– YOU WILL SUCCEED BETTER ONLINE
• Build your web visibility
– The right kind of web visibility improves your
chances of landing your dream job
– With paper resumes, it is difficult to show what
kind of skills you have
– The web is full of opportunities to build job
applications that stand out
– You can substantiate your know-how online with
the help of photos, videos and texts
• For example YouTube provides an excellent opportunity
for creating a job application on video
5. • Check your online reputation
– It is very difficult for people in today's world
to live their lives without leaving traces online
– The traces you leave behind are significant in
terms of employment
– Although the laws in Finland prohibit
Googling employees, employers increasingly
look up what kind of traces job applicants
leave behind on the web
• For example, it is good to check the privacy
settings on Facebook at regular intervals. Status
updates are visible to everyone by default unless
visibility is limited
6. • Professional Networking pays off
– Established networks have always been
important in terms of job searching
– Professional networking should be started at
the very beginning of studies
• Fellow students may prove valuable when looking
for a job after graduation
– Networking on various community services is
not only professionally sensible but also easy
• For example LinkedIn, an online community aimed
at job searching, has chat rooms for different
industries, and they are frequented by companies'
recruiting managers who are looking for future
talent
