  1. Empowering Teachers, Schools and ParentsThis was my working title but it’s not really correct as its missing things, Music services used to just be about Teachers, Schools and Parents but thingsare changingwhat about pupils, academies, and charities plus a group of other organisations that get involved with music education. So a better title would perhaps be {Click to next slide}
  2. Empowering Teachers and CustomersThat’s still not correct, by just saying Teachers I’m missing out other people that work for the organisation. So what about{Click to next slide}
  3. Empowering PeopleThere we go I’m going to talk to you about empowering people, for 40 minutesSoWhy empower people? What exactly does it mean and how do you do it?I’m going to talk for a while and try and give you the answers to these questions. I am going to give you some reasons why and look at what it means and how you can use modern technology in this quest.{Click to next slide}
  4. So lets look a little be more intowhy we would want to empower people, the very phrase sounds like something from an American management courseIt almost makes you cringeBut let me explain itEmpowerment involves trusting others to make important decisions and to take action. Empowering customers enables them to make critical decisions concerning doing business with you. This goes beyond the normal decisions that a customer might make such as the quality, delivery time, reorder point, etc., that would normally be part of their buying process. Empowering the customer puts him or her in control of many of the decisions and actions that you might normally control.This way the customer is not totally dependent on you to get the product or service that you provide. Ultimately, everyone’s needs are met in a more effective and efficient manner.The objective of empowering the customer is to streamline the buying process as much as possible and provide you the opportunity to be of service to the customer in even more important and value-added ways. It is not simply “dumping” your work off onto the customer, nor is it an abdication of your responsibilities to the customer in any way.
  5. To make any business successful you need to ensure two things are correct.{Click}Offer value for moneyand{Click}Offer an Excellent Customer Service  Empowering people is a double edged sword,in letting your customers manage what they are doing with you and providing them with correct and up to date information will improve the way they feel about you and the service you provide. Providing your employees with a better picture of a situation and giving them the correct tools will allow them to provide a better service. Not only will the service improve but your costs will reduce.
  6. Add up how much time is spent processing {Click}applications, {Click}payments, {Click}customer queries {Click}think of the teacher having to hand write out his registers each term with the same names as he wrote last term{Click}{Relaxed work picture fades in}now think what a difference it would make if parents filled in their own applications, made their own payments, answered their own queries.
  7. Lets first of all look at the traditional system that’s tends to be in place across the country.We have the various stakeholders, Schools, Parents, Teachers, Pupils and the music service represented by the administrators.Notice here that the local administration are using some sort of administration software, could be Ensemble but could also be any other piece of software. This software stores the data locally.All communication with the other stakeholders is performed physically or verbally via paper, phone or perhaps email of fax. Note though that whatever the mechanism the communication has to be manually processed by the administration team. When volumes of paperwork and queries get high we occasionally see this.{Click for ambulance}
  8. So here we have a modern integrated system. We still have our administrators working with an administration tool but as you can see some or all of the data they are working with is now up on the cloud. I will talk about Cloud databases in a moment but they are basically a secure database that is managed for you bay a specialist provider that provide managed access to authorised users, in this case your stakeholders. Teachers, Parents etc.We then have a web portal and mobile apps that will control access and provide functionality.So if you compare this slide with the previous slide the big difference here is we are empowering your stakeholders by giving them the necessary tools to carry out tasks directly rather than expecting them to either verbally or via paper send instructions to the administration team for processing.
  9. BUT BUTBUT{Click}But our teachers wont use the internet, {Click}our parents can’t even fill in a form let alone apply online,{Click}they don’t have bank accounts, {Click}what about data protection. etcetc etc.{Click}There is always a case for not adopting modern technology and I know that working within the confirms of a local authority as many of you do, there is a culture of barriers to any change. Sometimes those barriers are there for very good reasons and sometimes its because they have always been there.
  10. But what I have just described is happening, {Click to display 1st List}it’s the way business is going and we have a number of private business clients and independent colleges that are committed to this approach because they can see {Click to display 2nd List}it will drastically reduce their cost base and improve their level of service allowing them to greatly expand.
  11. I often hear comments about how some teachers won’t even read emails let alone use a smart phone {Click for humorous pictures here}and about how some parents come into offices with cash because they don’t have a bank account. {Click for humorous pictures here}So it could be asked how you can employ all this modern technology. We therefore perhaps need to look at the evidence in terms of what consumers are looking for and how IT literate people areLets first have a look at Online Sales
  12. In 2009 42.6% of UK consumers buy something online at least once a week, and the average online spend per shopper is £81 per month.On line sales are now worth over £50 billionOnline sales increasing by over 20% year on yearWe all know that the economy isn't growing much so these sales must be at the cost of traditional selling
  13. Quote from the UK Office for National StatisticsIn other words todays consumer is expecting to drive their purchases more and more through the internet. If you embrace this fact then you can grow, if you don’t then you could suffer.Now what about the availability of computers{Next Slide}
  14. These are figures from 2009The survey also foundHouseholds with children were more likely to have Internet access at home than those without: 93 per cent of households with two adults and two or more children had Internet access at home
  15. 50% of adults enjoy the convenience and ease of online bankingConsumers are spending almost half of their waking hours watching TV, using their mobiles and other communications devicesThey are also using several types of media at the same time – with the average person cramming 8 hours 48 minutes of media into just over seven hours during the average day.
  16. So make of these statistics what you will but I think it says{Click}most of your customers are on the internet and use it regularly. {Click}Most teachers are computer literate; nearly all have mobile phones, half of which are smart phones. So yes you will have people that find it hard to adapt and some parents will want to send in a cheque but the vast percentage of your business stake holders will use the technology and expect it and each year that expectation will grow.One final note, the cheque guarantee scheme finishes on the 30th June this year and the plan is to have phased out cheques by 2018, that’s in just six years, in fact I think it will be sooner than that. You try to buy petrol today or go into a major retailer and use a cheque, you won’t get far.
  17. Parent ApplicationsTeacher PortalPupils Mobile ApplicationParents Mobile Application
  18. So what are they applying for?We see two models here{Click}Application that’s very similar to a paper application to request some tuition in which a parent/pupil is applying for some tuition in a subject you offer at a some venue. Such applications would have to be vetted in order to see if the actual teaching could take place, can more pupils in this subject be taught, does the teacher have the time etc. What's really being done here is an application to go on a waiting list is being entered.{Click}You then have the type of application where the lesson or course is all been defined and the parent/pupil is applying to join it. Such lessons would have specific times and durations, maximum numbers etc. The application needs to enter the pupil into the lesson/course.What we are going to do now is just run through a simply application so you can see the sort of process your customers would need to go through.
  19. You will have noticed that in the process we just went through there was no request for any money.{Click}For many music services to take money at this point may well be an issue but for others subject to less regulations and those free of council control or in the private sector than taking money at this point is simple and has obvious advantages.
  20. Number of Services out thereSage PayWorld PayYou need a Payment Gate and an Online BankCost are about 10p per transaction plus Credit Card 2.5% of transaction Debit Card 40pSo for an average invoice of around £100 the cost would be 50p when paid by debit card and £2.60 if paid by credit card.
  21. What do they do?That’s not a rhetorical question by the wayTeachKnow when and where and what they teach - DiaryWho they teach - Pupil ListsRecord what they did, did they do it, who turned up - Timesheet/RegisterRecord details of a session - Keep notesRecord progression - Record assessments Claim - Claim sheets/invoicesIts all paper based and a lot of it is duplication. Much of the data can’t be sharedE.G. When they work out their diary no one else knows, when they fill in a register no body else knows until the registers are submitted.
  22. The Teachers Portal{Click}Its Function is to get rid of Paper{Click}If we get rid of paper
  23. Smart phones explain{Click for Iphone picture}The iPhone when it was released in 2007 totally revolutionised the mobile phone market,Not just in its style and desirability but in its functionality. There were already smart phones out there, Microsoft had a windows based phone and so did a number of others, But it was apples approach to usability and the concept of the APP that totally changed the way smart phones have developed. {Click to next slide}
  24. Apple have continued to enhance the iPhone but we now have offerings from Google in the form of Android based phones, the Samsung Galaxy{Click for pic} being perhaps the most common, versions from Blackberry and Microsoft put there design in the bin, started again and came up with Windows Phone 7. {Click for pic} Not the first time they have plagiarised Apple.{Click to next slide}
  25. All these phones have a lot in common, they all use touch technology, they all have GPS so they know where they are and can interact with mapping software and most importantly can have software developed and distributed to them as APPs, Apple have iTunes, Google have ?, Microsoft have “The Marketplace”.
  26. SmartPhones{Click}There has been a surge in smartphone ownership, 15 million people have smartphones{Click}A third of adults access content or send emails on their mobile phones, among 15-24s this rises to nearly 70 per cent.{Click}Surfing the internet via mobile phones is the fastest growing mobile media activity with 1 million new users each year
  27. As to which is best, well that's subjective and up to personnel choice, in terms of total phones sold the {Click}iPhone is around 15% {Click}and so is Blackberry, {Click}Google's Android phones take about 35% of the market place {Click}and Microsoft about 5%. The rest of the market place is taken up with standard phones, the majority of which are Nokia’s. In factNokia is responsible for about 40% of total phone sales but have not kept up with software design and are losing market share. They have therefore signed an agreement with Microsoft to use Windows Mobile 7 on their new phones as from this Autumn. There is therefore a good chance that the Windows Mobile platform may become the dominant platform.We have taken the decision to develop software apps for the iPhone, Android and windows phone. We may at a later date release app’s for Blackberry.
  28. Today we can get the best of both worlds combining the PC and the Phone{Click}Apple have the Ipad{Click}A range of other manufacturers have there version of the Ipad running Android{Click}We have Tablet PC’s which combine a touch screen and a laptop and run Windows{Click}And you will see more and more touch screen versions of the standard PC
  29. So Will People use Mobile Technology{Click}Is it appropriate to ask teachers to use them{Click}Will parents want an app{Click}Will students want an appYou will have to make your own minds up on that, but go back five years and look what has happened to technology and life style in that time.I can’t predict the future, I don’t know what new technology and trends will come about over the next five years but I would but a pretty hefty bet on at Ladbrokes that those businesses that don’t adopt mobile technology soon will get left behind
  30. Empowering PeopleEarlier to day we asked why{Click}Why empower people? Reduced Costs and Improve Service{Click}What exactly does it mean and Giving tools and decision process to the People{Click}how do you do it?Embrace modern technology, recognise what people are capable of and what they want{Click to next slide}
