14:10 A Preliminary Study on Drilling Waste Management in
Saudi Arabia
The drilling operations and activities are associated with several
serious impacts on the surrounding environment. The improper
handling of the large quantities of drilling wastes produced from
the various drilling activities may pose serious threats to the
surrounding environment. This study aimed to investigate the issue
of drilling waste management in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. To
achieve this, data on the current oil and gas drilling activities were
collected from dfferent drilling contractors working in Eastern
Province of Saudi Arabia using questionnaire type. The survey
revealed that about 63.2% of drilling contractors use water-based
mud while 31.6 % are using the oil-based mud. The survey also
found that drilling contractors produce bewteen 500 to 4000 tons
of used drilling muds and between 300 to 3000 tons of the solids
cuttings.
