4. “So tell me…are there different types of Fetishes?” “There are many diverse kinds of fetishes, depending on the object being fetishized. Fetishes come in three varieties -- media, form and animate.”
5. Media Fetishes In a media fetish, material is what is obsessed over. Media fetishes include rubber, leather, latex, and silk.
6. Form Fetishes With a form fetish, it's the shape of the object that has great significance. Stiletto heels, knee-high boots and lingerie fall into this category.
8. Symptoms Early symptoms for a fetish involve touching the object of desire. The amount of time spent thinking about the fetish object may increase. Over time, the importance of the fetish object expands. In the extreme, it becomes a requirement for achieving sexual pleasure and gratification.
9. DSM-IV-TR The corresponding DSM-code for fetishism is 302.81 The diagnostic criteria for fetishism are as follows: Unusual sexual fantasies, drives or behavior occur over a time span of at least six months. Sometimes unusual sexual fantasies occur and vanish by themselves; in this case any medical treatment is not necessary. The affected person, her object or another person experience impairment or distress in multiple functional areas. Functional area refers to different aspects of life such as private social contacts, job, etc. It is sufficient for the diagnosis if one of the participants is being hurt or mistreated in any other way.
10. Classification of Sexual Fetishism A 5-tier classification of sexual fetishism Class I Fetishists: Desirers Slight preference for certain kinds of sex partners (females with large breasts, or blonde hair), sexual stimuli (a female undergarment) or sexual activity (oral sex). But this is not necessary for sexual arousal. Class II Fetishists: Cravers Strong preference for certain kinds of sex partners, sexual stimuli, or sexual activity. Class III Fetishists: Moderate Level Fetishists Sexual arousal and sexual performance are not possible without the specific stimuli. May feel the need to commit a crime such as theft or burglary in order to obtain the object of their fetishistic desire. They may be convicted for larceny, theft and even assault. Class IV Fetishists: High Level Fetishists The preferred stimulus (e.g., the high heeled shoe) takes the place of a sex partner. A partner is not necessary and not even desired. Sexual arousal and activity can take place, just with the preferred stimulus, the fetish. Class V Fetishists: Fetishistic murderers These fetishists may murder a person in order to obtain a fetishistic object belonging to the victim. In some cases, the fetishist will murder because he is interrupted and startled by someone during the theft. In other instances, the offender may have a fetish for a particular part of the body (breasts, genitals), and the fetish demands expression through his mutilation and destruction of the part that most fascinates them.
