  1. Module 7: Configuring and Managing the VMM Library Course 10215A Presentation: 60 minutes Lab: 60 minutes After completing this module, students will be able to: Describe the VMM Library. Manage profiles and templates. Make the VMM Library highly available. Required materials To teach this module, you need the Microsoft Office PowerPoint® file 10215A_07.ppt. Important It is recommended that you use PowerPoint 2002 or a later version to display the slides for this course. If you use PowerPoint Viewer or an earlier version of PowerPoint, all the features of the slides might not be displayed correctly. Preparation tasks To prepare for this module: Read all of the materials for this module. Practice performing the demonstrations and the lab exercises. Work through the Module Review and Takeaways section and determine how you will use this section to reinforce student learning and promote knowledge transfer to on-the-job performance. Make sure that students are aware that there are additional online resources for the module on the Course CD.
  2. Briefly present Module content. Make a short introduction for key topics covered in this module. Tell students that o ne of the main components of System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) is the Library . You can describe the Library as a catalog of resources that you can use for building virtual machines . Course 10215A
  3. Present the Lesson content. Explain students that you will introduce the Library in this lesson , and that you will show them how to manage the Library Server. Course 10215A
  4. Define the Library by using the definition from the slide. After that, discuss the terms Library Server and Library share. Also, spend some time talking about the library resources indexing. Tell students that when you create new virtual machines in VMM, you must use Library resources. Question: What is the primary purpose of Library? Answer: The main purpose of Library is to catalog and index various resources that you can use to build new virtual machines. Course 10215A
  5. Explain that the library contains the building blocks for creating new virtual machines . Without library resources, you need to perform the entire operating system installation for a virtual machine, and then configure all necessary settings. Describe the various Library resources. Students might be familiar with file-based resources, so spend more time describing the templates, profiles , and virtual machines that the Library stores . Course 10215A
  6. Define the Library server as a central repository of resources that you can use to create new virtual machines. Describe that the VMM Server is configured as a default Library server, and that this default library server might be the only one an organization ever needs. This typically is the case i n small and medium-sized environments. Emphasize that you can add more library servers and Library shares based on business needs . Describe the reasons that you would associate Library servers with specific host groups . Question: What is the purpose of library groups? Answer: Library groups enable you to organize library servers. Course 10215A
  7. Describe reasons for storing virtual machines in Library. Also, explain what happens when virtual machine is stored to Library, and what happens when you deploy it on a host. After that describe actions that can be performed while virtual machine is in Library. Question : Can you provide one usage scenario for stored virtual machines? Answer : An example is that you can store a virtual machine that is for a specific project and that you use only temporarily, from time to time. Course 10215A
  8. The p urpose of this demo nstration is to show students how they can add an additional library server to the VMM infrastructure, and how they can ali gn the Library server with a host group. 12. Present the content of the lesson. Explain that h ardware and guest operating system profiles are very important parts in rapid virtual machine deployment. Instead of configuring various virtual machine and operating system settings each time you deploy a new virtual machine, you can use preconfigured values from profiles. Both hardware profiles and guest operating system profiles are VMM Library resources. The virtual machine template also is a Library resource that consists of a hardware profile, virtual hard disk, and a guest operating system profile. Course 10215A
  13. Explain the purpose of hardware profiles. Do not spend time explaining which hardware specifications are in a profile, as the next topic discusses that . The main purpose of this topic is to explain profiles to students, and explain how and why to use them. Question : What is the main benefit of using hardware profiles in VMM? Answer : It enables you to perform rapid virtual machine deployment with consistent hardware configurations. Course 10215A
  14. Explain each component of a hardware profile . Question : If you want to map .ISO file to virtual machine DVD drive in hardware profile settings, where should you store .ISO file? Answer : You must store and index the .ISO file in Library, as it is the only place from where you can map .ISO file to DVD drive in hardware profile settings. Course 10215A
  15. Explain a g uest operating system profile. Emphasize that a g uest operating system profile provides standard settings for the operating systems on virtual machines . Also mention that guest operating system profiles are database objects that do not have any physical files associated with them , so they are not stored on Library Shares. After you create a template, no association is maintained between the template and the guest operating system profile that was used with it. Question: What is the purpose of using guest operating system profiles? Answer : The guest operating system profile contains some automated answers to operating system setup and other settings that can provide a consistent operating system environment when you are deploying new virtual machines. Course 10215A

Question: What are the components of a virtual machine template? Answer: H ardware profile, guest operating systems profile , and virtual hard disk. Course 10215A
  28. Course 10215A
  29. Review Questions 1. What is the VMM Library, and what kind of resources can you index in it? Answer: VMM Library is a catalog that gives access to file-based resources (such as Sysprep scripts, ISO images, and virtual hard disks) that are stored on your library servers, and to virtual machine templates, guest operating system profiles, and hardware profiles that reside in the VMM database. 2. Why do you create a hardware profile? Answer: You use hardware profiles to have consistent hardware configuration when creating new virtual machines and to speed up a virtual machine’s deployment process. 3. What is a guest operating system profile? What kind of information does it contain? Answer: A guest operating system profile is a collection of operating system settings that you can import into a virtual machine template to provide a consistent operating system configuration for virtual machines created from that template. It contain information such as computer name, administrator password, product key, and other data. How should you add a clustered file server as a Library server to VMM? Answer: To add a clustered file server as a Library server, you have to use the Client Access Point name that you define during the cluster’s creation. Common Issues Related to Desktop Application Support Point the students to possible troubleshooting tips for the issues that this section presents. Real-World Issues and Scenarios You can either discuss possible solutions for the scenarios at the end of the module or assign these scenarios as homework for the students. If you assign the scenarios as homework, you should provide some high-level hints that might help the students solve the problem stated in the scenarios. You also can do a follow-up debriefing on some of the scenarios that you assign as homework. You can create high-level hints for each scenario by using the following possible solutions for the scenarios: Scenario 1. Solution 1. Scenario 2. Solution 2. Scenario 3. Solution 3 . Tools Point out the location from which students can install each key tool. Let students review the function and usage of each tool on their own. Remind students that they can use this as a master list to help them gather all the tools required to facilitate their application support work. Course 10215A
