Choosing Books for Babies

Look for books with:
• PICTURES of familiar objects
• Strong rhythm, rich language and
  interesting sounds
• Simple Large illustrations
• Not a lot of text on the page
Introducing Books to
          Your Baby

• Pick the best time to read
• Stop if baby is restless or upset
• Treat books as toys to be played
  with
• Use expression to create interest
I LIKE BOOKS
         *Print Motivation*
• Begin reading books early
• Choose books with clear and
  simple pictures
• Let your child see you reading
  books, newspapers and
  magazines that you enjoy
I HEAR WORDS
      *Phonological Awareness*
• !!! Sing songs !!!
• Songs break words into smaller
  bits so children can hear the
  different sounds in words
• Say or sing nursery rhymes
I SEE WORDS
        *Print Awareness*
• Use board books to encourage
  your child to hold the book
• Point to the words in the book as
  you say them, especially words
  that are repeated
• Hold the book upside down… 
I KNOW LETTERS
         *Letter Knowledge*

• Begin with focusing on the first
  letter of child’s name
• Use your child’s finger to trace the
  shapes of letters.
• Play with letters (foam, plastic)
I KNOW WORDS
           *Vocabulary*
• Choose books that have things
  that you don’t see every day
• Name pictures as you point to
  them
• Learn together by reading about
  subjects your child likes
I CAN TELL A STORY
          *Narrative Skills*
• Narrate your actions to your baby.
  “Mommy is putting her shoes on”
• Re-read books you have read
   before
• Ask your child questions even
   when they can’t answer

Editor's Notes

  1. Children who love books will want to learn how to read. Children enjoying books IS print Motivation
  2. Playing with words and sounds through singing and rhymes. Helps children to sound out words on their own
  3. Noticing print on a page, reading from left to right knowing upside down from right side up
  4. Includes learning that each letter has it’s own shape, sound and name.
  5. Knowing the names of things. Books offer vocabulary that we do not use in conversation or hear in television.
  6. Being able to retell a story helps children understand what they read.
