The Pannonian Plain covers the northern third of the
country while the easternmost tip of Serbia extends into the
Wallachian Plain. The terrain of central part of the country, with
the region of Šumadija at its heart, consists chiefly of hills
traversed by the rivers. Mountains dominate the southern third
of Serbia. Dinaric Alps stretch in the west and the southwest
following the flow of the rivers Drina and Ibar. Carpathian
Mountains and Balkan Mountains stretch in north–south
direction in the eastern Serbia.
The Danube, the second largest European river, passes through
Serbia. It is joined by its biggest tributaries, the Great Morava,
Sava and Tisza rivers.
Climate
The climate of Serbia is under the influences of the landmass of
Eurasia and Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. With mean January
temperatures around 0 °C (32 °F), and mean July temperatures of 22 °C
(72 °F), it can be classified into humid subtropical climate. In the
north, the climate is more continental, with cold winters, and hot,
humid summers along with well distributed rainfall patterns. In the
south, summers and autumns are drier, and winters are relatively cold,
with heavy inland snowfall in the mountains.
Environment
There are 377 protected areas of Serbia, encompassing 4,947
square kilometers or 6.4% of the country. Those protected
areas include 5 national parks (Đerdap, Tara, Kopaonik, Fruška
Gora and Šar Mountain), 15 nature parks, 15 "landscapes of
outstanding features", 61 nature reserves, and 281 natural
monuments.
4. is the capital and the largest city in
Serbia, with a population of around 1.7 million. It is
located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers.
The name Belgrade was mentioned for the first time in 878,
and during its long and turbulent history the city has been
occupied by 40 different armies and rebuilt from its ashes
38 times.
In 1918, the city became the capital of the Kingdom of
Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, the capital of the Kingdom of
Yugoslavia
in 1929, and in 1945, the capital of socialist Yugoslavia.
In 2006, Belgrade once again became the capital of the
independent state of Serbia
Belgrade Fortress (Beogradska Tvrđava) is the oldest
cultural and historical landmark in Belgrade. Also of
interest to tourists are Skadarlija, the central bohemian
quarter; the Residence of Princess Ljubica (Konak Kneginje
Ljubice); Captain Miša’s Building (Kapetan Mišino Zdanje); the
Old Palace and New Palace (Stari Dvor and Novi Dvor); the
Serbian National Assembly building and the Cathedral of Saint
Sava (Hram Svetog Save).
is the 4th largest city in Serbia,
Situated in the heart of Serbia and its Šumadija
region. According to many things, we can say
first in Serbia. It was the first capital of modern
Serbian state, established the first secondary
school in Serbia, Licej, forerunner of the University
of Belgrade. It also had the first court, the first
theater, first newspapers, art gallery, museum, library.
is one of the oldest cities in the Balkans and
it is the third largest in Serbia. It is also notable as
the birthplace of Constantine the Great, the first
Christian Roman Emperor and the founder of
Constantinople. The most important cultural and
historical attractions in Niš are the Mediana – a
large 4th-century Roman estate; Nis Fortress – the
best-preserved Turkish fortress in the central Balkans,
built in 1723 and containing the remains of Roman
Naissus in its foundations; the Skull Tower (Ćele Kula).
One of the first impressions
the city makes is that it is a city of well-tended
beauty. Its architecture and spirit have been shaped
by many nations. Easy-going and surrounded by
fertile lowland, Fruška Mountain and the Danube,
the capital city of Vojvodina is a pearl amongst
the Serbian cities. It is also called the ‘Serbian
Athens’, the Danube River Gibraltar and is home to
south-east Europe’s largest music festival EXIT
which has earned a global reputation for its
diversity and cutting-edge music.

► GREETINGS - When celebrating birthdays, New Year or other holidays, we kiss
the person on the cheek three times, so don’t be surprised.
► SERBS in general are open and direct. Personal questions showing interest in
stranger’s life, politics, and money are sometimes the basis of conversation in
Serbia.
► SERBIAN NEW YEAR - We celebrate holidays under the old (Julian) calendar.
This means that Christmas is celebrated on January 7th. we celebrate New Year's eve
twice - regularly on December 31st, and we also celebrate Serbian New Year, January
13th.
► SLAVA - This is the day when each house (family) celebrates its own patron saint.
By tradition, the glory is celebrated in small circle of people, with family and close
friends.
