Research has examined both engineering demographics and factors improving or impeding diversity. However, media regularly emphasizes current lack of diversity in technology, while putting considerably less focus on specific actions to drive change. We will share some research data, as well as information about a number of initiatives to draw in young people - from elementary to college - who might otherwise never consider an engineering future, including: target demographic groups, what specifically each initiative is doing, and results. Learn how specific initiatives are making a difference – and what you can do to make a difference, too.

From Chattanooga Public Library as his first creative library in 2013 to 2 years working in New Zealand, Hoenke has come to learn that all areas of library service in the 21st century need creative thinkers and doers to continue to push the boundaries of what a library can be to a community ahead. Learn how to connect with, hire, and manage creative types; realize that everything we do in libraries these days involves some form of creativity or makerspace-type thinking (scissors=makerspace); see what it's like to lead the first ever makerspace in Wellington, New Zealand, and more!

Justin Hoenke shares his experiences moving from the super creative world of youth services in libraries to the still creative but not the same kind of creative world of leading a library. He discusses the pros and cons of moving into leadership and managing teams and how to use your creativity to engage your team and community.

This is a presentation I gave for the 2018 NLA/NSLA Joint Conference. Small and Rural Libraries are not just little libraries lost out in the middle of nowhere: they are the centers of their community, providing essential resources to so many Americans. Even though budgets these days are flat and libraries are being asked to do more, these libraries are the ones doing some of the most essential community based work in the country. Be it through their programs, their personalized services, or the simple day to day things they do for their guests, small and rural libraries are making an impact and helping many Americans navigate the many changes in our modern society. In this workshop, attendees will learn new strategies, program ideas, and customer service ideas for how their small and rural library can make the leap to the next level of library service for their community without busting the budget or needing more staff.

Libraries and Video Gamers: A Perfect Fit For All Communities by Justin Hoenke. If you’re reading this, chances are that you are attending the Pittsburgh Retro Gaming Convention, an event that brings the community of video game lovers together. You know what else brings community together? Libraries! The days of the old, quiet, and musty library are gone. Nowadays, libraries are vibrant community centers, full of life, all kinds of literature, and events for all ages. And guess what else? They have video games too! (well, at least the really good ones do). In this presentation, Librarian Justin Hoenke will share his experience about bringing video games into libraries. You’ll learn about how he created video game collections in public libraries all over the country and also how he created events that centered around gaming for all ages at the library. Gamers who are looking to take video games out into the community and do some community building should attend this event.

In late 2015, I had the honor of visiting New Zealand and Australia to share stories and ideas about public libraries with other librarians and politicians. My focus of these visits was to communicate how important it was for the modern public library to have real, authentic communication with their community members. While I did modified versions of this presentations for my audiences, the basic idea is all here in this presentation. -Keynote Speaker: LIANZA 2015 Conference, Wellington New Zealand, 2015. -Guest of the State Library of New South Wales, Sydney Australia, 2015. -Guest of the State Library of Queensland, Brisbane Australia, 2015. I also gave this presentation at the 2015 NYLA Conference in Lake Placid, NY. That was great too!

(This presentation was given with Engage3D Education Director James McNutt at the Fall Tenn-Share Conference in Nashville, TN on 9/20/13) In July 2013, fifty teens gathered on the 2nd Floor of the Chattanooga Public Library for four weeks to learn HTML, CSS, Python, and how to program robots in a program called DEV DEV:<summer />. It all started with a conversation in May 2013 between the Chattanooga Public Library, AIGA Chattanooga, and Engage 3D. The goal was to develop a technology/coding program for teens ages 12 – 18 that highlighted the importance of living in Chattanooga, one of a few cities in the Western hemisphere connected to a fiber optics network providing high speed gigabit internet access. Over the course of one month, the project quickly came together as a four week long camp developed by the library, Engage 3D, and AIGA Chattanooga with funding made possible by The Benwood Foundation, a private foundation in Chattanooga, Tennessee seeking to stimulate creative and innovative efforts to build and strengthen the Chattanooga community. Video games are now a part of libraries, but many questions have still been left unanswered. What is the true value of the video game as a storytelling device? What kind of digital literacy does a video game offer? And most importantly, what do we do once we have the video gamers in the library? Hoenke will share insights into the video gaming culture and show through examples how this medium is a form of digital literacy that librarians cannot miss out on.

Video Gaming in Libraries 101: ONE YEAR LATER - Justin Hoenke Video games are a new thing to libraries, but they’ve been well established in our culture for over 30 years. In order to reach out to all of our unique patron groups, video games in libraries should be embraced by librarians as a way to connect with our community. This presentation will follow up on last year’s video gaming in libraries 101 program and share real life stories of video gaming in libraries collected by Justin Hoenke at the Portland Public Library over the past year. Current trends in gaming, hot topics, and the future of video gaming in libraries will be discussed as well as an overview of how to start up a gaming collection for those that have yet to.

In order to reach out to all of our unique patron groups, video games in libraries should be embraced by librarians as a way to connect with our community. This presentation will focus on educating librarians on how to start a video gaming program at their public library. Taking a simple, cost effective approach, the aim of this presentation is to remove any worries about gaming in libraries and instead replace them with positive, forward thinking ideas. Wizards are very useful for creating a good user experience. In all businesses, interactive sessions are most beneficial. To improve the user experience, wizards in Odoo provide an interactive session. For creating wizards, we can use transient models or abstract models. This gives features of a model class except the data storing. Transient and abstract models have permanent database persistence. For them, database tables are made, and the records in such tables are kept until they are specifically erased.
