- As with any other topic, people look to libraries for help exploring the latest in technology and the Internet. We want to be of considerably greater help. No area is a better example of where we can fulfill our purpose of aiding lifelong learning.

- To highlight this last need in particular, I use the term “strivers” to refer to library patrons using the library to help land a job or advance in a career. Think of Will Smith in the movie “The Pursuit of Happyness,” a movie that I highly recommend and that is in our collection. And we also have the book, which is about a father who uses every resource at his disposal to rise out of homelessness.
- A public library is one of the chief ways that a community encourages personal and collective growth. So we’re happy to see a strong appetite for what we offer.

- Beyond those limitations, we have no handicapped access to our lower level. There is no easy and dignified way for disabled visitors to reach our children’s area. They are cut off from events like the Three Little Pigs,

- We must also point out that our block has very little parking.
- And only one handicapped space. Far too often, groups must look elsewhere. Unfortunately, they learn not to look to us for the needs that I’ve mentioned. I’m the one who usually gives the bad news, so I’m voicing these facility shortcomings for everyone who walks away disappointed. Far from seeking to divert support from other causes, we’re seeking support on their behalf.
- Again, the front steps are an example of the kinds of things that need attention in a 40-year-old public building. We were thrilled to have a volunteer materialize in the fall to patch a step that had developed a big hole. But last month, another entire chunk dropped off, and other cracks appeared. We now see that the steps are beyond patching and need to be replaced.

- In particular, we plan to stress audio-visual capabilities, since that would fit with our film collection and cultural emphasis, and because educators and community organizers today readily use audio and video.
- That leaves a void that our Library aims to fill by partnering our expertise with area technology providers. We envision friendly, comfortable sessions where patrons get to try new hardware, software and web services. The technology retailers gain because you’ll go to them if you like what you see.

Right now, it’s as big as a car, but surely it won’t be long before it’s as small as a toaster.
