8. Our current facility also limits our potential as …
9. Our core mission is to inspire and enable learning from infancy onward, most notably through promoting reading.
10. A venue that supports community causes.
11. … a site for public presentations. But this is only a shadow of the service that we could provide. Our desire is that when leaders of these valuable efforts have needs such as …
12. We also envision providing …
13. Our Library supports any number of community groups as we are able. For example, we provide display space and …
14. A friendly place to stay current with technology.
15. As with any other topic, people look to libraries for help exploring the latest in technology and the Internet. We want to be of considerably greater help. No area is a better example of where we can fulfill our purpose of aiding lifelong learning.
16. A friendly place to stay current with technology.
17. To highlight this last need in particular, I use the term “strivers” to refer to library patrons using the library to help land a job or advance in a career. Think of Will Smith in the movie “The Pursuit of Happyness,” a movie that I highly recommend and that is in our collection. And we also have the book, which is about a father who uses every resource at his disposal to rise out of homelessness.
18. A public library is one of the chief ways that a community encourages personal and collective growth. So we’re happy to see a strong appetite for what we offer.
19. Overall circulation has grown 43%.
20. Our current facility also limits our potential as …
21. Instead, we need to move tables aside and steal chairs from all over the building.
22. Here, meetings have to happen out in the open and risk disrupting other patrons.
23. The Board has never been better constituted to realize a bold vision. Today’s event is an example of a new step that may not have been possible in past years. This group: Has the benefit of past studies and discussions Recognizes that the Library stands at a critical juncture Has a good record of following through on its plans Includes fresh blood that’s vital during bold undertakings As well as the benefit of experience and familiarity with the Library’s past
24. Beyond those limitations, we have no handicapped access to our lower level. There is no easy and dignified way for disabled visitors to reach our children’s area. They are cut off from events like the Three Little Pigs,
25. … an appearance by Curious George,
26. … and a visit this past Tuesday by Barnum & Bailey clowns.
27. We must also point out that our block has very little parking.
28. And only one handicapped space. Far too often, groups must look elsewhere. Unfortunately, they learn not to look to us for the needs that I’ve mentioned. I’m the one who usually gives the bad news, so I’m voicing these facility shortcomings for everyone who walks away disappointed. Far from seeking to divert support from other causes, we’re seeking support on their behalf.
29. Again, the front steps are an example of the kinds of things that need attention in a 40-year-old public building. We were thrilled to have a volunteer materialize in the fall to patch a step that had developed a big hole. But last month, another entire chunk dropped off, and other cracks appeared. We now see that the steps are beyond patching and need to be replaced.
30. Other things that we’re watchful of or have presented problems are: Handicapped accessibility, as I’ve mentioned Our roof Our wiring
31. Our heating Flooding that’s occurred in the basement (though thankfully not for a while) Moisture
32. Our sidewalk Our sewer line Our air conditioning
33. Obsolete shelving Interior and exterior doors and Energy efficiency And, yes, I do realize that I’ve just driven down your bids for the building.
34. Our current facility also limits our potential as …
35. First of all …
36. Meeting space
37. We have no presentation space.
38. Meeting space
39. We have no kitchen space.
40. … we envision a facility built with change in mind. This doesn’t mean a sterile environment.
41. Places to sit alone and enjoy a book in the sun …
42. An attractive,
43. imaginative,
44. striking,
45. Or out of the sun …
46. A special someone.
47. In particular, we plan to stress audio-visual capabilities, since that would fit with our film collection and cultural emphasis, and because educators and community organizers today readily use audio and video.
48. That leaves a void that our Library aims to fill by partnering our expertise with area technology providers. We envision friendly, comfortable sessions where patrons get to try new hardware, software and web services. The technology retailers gain because you’ll go to them if you like what you see.
49. Many news stories have featured senior citizens enjoying them as a new way to stay active. We already deliver materials to seniors ...
50. … with generous spaces that include …
51. …state-of-the-art, continually-refreshed digital presentations that show off the best of the Hollidaysburg Area.
52. Video screens that highlight public servants in fields such as … the military law enforcement firefighting emergency services government education health spiritual guidance coaching and the arts
53. Leadership,
54. Performance,
55. And dedication to others.
56. A showcase for our many special places: Natural areas, buildings and other sites of significance and beauty.
57. And a means to celebrate the “ordinary” residents who provide the backbone of the community as: Family members Friends Volunteers and Workers
58. On the horizon is the ability to print books on the spot. You’re looking at the Espresso Book Machine, which promises: (quote) Library-quality paperbacks at low cost, identical to factory-made books, printed direct from digital file for the reader in minutes (unquote) Yes, a book vending machine that eliminates shipping and allows access to both the newest and the oldest texts. Right now, it’s as big as a car, but surely it won’t be long before it’s as small as a toaster.
59. I suppose virtual reality could come along and change everything.
60. … wireless power.
61. … along the lines of virtual keyboards and …
62. …a shared experiment in adaptable and green living.
63. Our current facility also limits our potential as …
64. Site available for purchase Centrally located within our service area Ability to control construction A developer who wants to work with us Space for current needs
65. Room to expand Adequate parking Easy access Likely to receive community support Attractive features to site or building
66. Visibility Proximity to schools Reasonable financial arrangements and a compatible neighborhood.
