2. United Students Government at Buffalo State College
The United Students Government (USG) of the University at Buffalo State represents the
interests of the students of the college and encourages their active participation in the campus
community.
The role of a government on any level is to protect the people that they govern; to ensure the
safety of the body that it represents.
The United Students Government at Buffalo State is calling for the Buffalo State faculty and staff to
protect the students at Buffalo State by recommending more lighting on campus. There are specific
areas on campus that need to be addressed.
On the pathway going towards the Student Apartment Complex (STAC) between the
Classroom building and the Technology building in construction, there is a circular area with
benches, trees and brick flooring. There is no lighting in this area and this creates a risk for
students that use this pathway at night, namely students that commute who utilize the
parking lots by STAC like lot M and L and students that reside in STAC.
The area alongside the Library going towards Bacon Hall is another area that needs to be
addressed. There are a few lamp posts that aren’t providing adequate lighting and this
poses a threat for students and faculty walking towards the parking lot behind Bacon Hall at
night.
The final area that needs to be addressed is the area between North Wing and Porter Hall.
There are a few lights in this area that don’t provide adequate lighting and needs to be
addressed because students like Crystal Goodwin have rec ognized this potential threat. This
issue, along with the area referenced earlier alongside the Library, can be addressed with
one simple action: switching the light bulbs in the lamp posts.
USG Senator Crystal Goodwin has proposed that on top of more lighting on campus in areas like
Porter Hall, the blue lights on campus need to be more effective. The blue lights would be a lot
more effective on campus if a sound came from them when triggered as a mechanism that can
ward off any potential threats. Senator Goodwin also proposes that a few more blue lights are
installed in the area around the Towers and Moore.
3. Attached to this document is a petition with 100 signatures of students that request lighting in the
area between the Classroom and Technology building, gathered by USG Senators Shenette
Richardson and Keshia Daniel. This is only a small sample of the students who have expressed a
necessity for lighting in this area. These students are requesting swift implementation because this
area is a major point of focus and safety needs to be assured as quickly as possible.
The United Students Government proposes that action is taken to ensure the safety of
the students here at Buffalo State with more lighting on campus. The students deserve to
feel a sense of security at the institution they pay a significant amount of money to attend.
