CREW COMPLIANCE
PROCEDURES
Campus Security
These guidelines have been produced to ensure cabin
crew are processed smoothly through the control
posts in line with the legislated requirements of the
EU and the UK Department for Transport.
Arriving at the Control Post
• When entering a control post all of your personal items/bags must be taken
through for screening. You are responsible for your own personal items / bags and
therefore cannot take responsibility for another crews members items/bags. Any
rubbish must be taken into the control post for disposal in the rubbish bins prior to
security screening.
• The driver of the vehicle should advance to the front of the queue, irrespective of
the crew they are transporting, to minimise the processing time. Once the driver
has been screened, they will advance the vehicle to the holding area in order for
the screened air crew to re-board.
• To minimise congestion, please exit the post as soon as you have recovered your
items.
Preparing for Security Checks
• Once in the control post, ensure that you and your personal belongings are ready
for screening.
• Every Control post has a liquid compliance bag stand where you can obtain clear
sealable bags.
– Each liquid item must be in a container of 100ml or less and this, in turn, must fit comfortably into a
1 litre, re sealable, clear plastic bag; referred to as a liquids compliance bag.
– Each person is allowed 1 liquids compliance bag.
– Essential/ prescription medication is excluded from this allowance and may be carried separately.
– Please ensure that the liquids compliance bag is removed from your hand luggage, sealed and
presented separately for x-ray screening.
– Essential medicines over 100ml in cabin baggage should be carried only in a sufficient amount for
your working day and evidence of this need must be provided; for example a letter from your doctor,
medical practitioner or a prescription label.
Non-Compliant Liquids
• Liquid containers found in cabin baggage, that do not have the size clearly marked
but are thought to be significantly larger than 100ml, must either be voluntarily
abandoned, or, if carrying hold baggage, the liquids are permitted to be placed in
hold baggage.
• Any loose liquid items under 100ml (except essential medication) which have not
been placed in the liquids compliance bag will be placed in a liquids compliant bag,
re-screened by x-ray and vapour detection equipment. This may result in a delay.
• Please be aware that hold bags containing liquids will be subjected to search if the
bag(s) get rejected for search due to concerns identified by the x ray operator or
the bag is chosen as a random selection.
Any bags screened as “hold bags” cannot be taken into the cabin of the aircraft and
the Captain of the flight should assume responsibility for this. Please note; this is a
legislative requirement and is subject to inspection by the DfT or EU.
Liquids, Gels, Creams and Pastes Explained
• Drinks– Bottles (plastic or glass), flasks, cans and cartons of drink must all be 100ml or
less if they are carried in cabin baggage. Items greater than 100ml can be carried in hold
baggage.
• Foodstuffs – Any fluid/liquid food products in packets, tubes, plastic or metal containers
including, but not limited to, syrups, jams, sauces, pastes or yoghurts are classified as
liquids with the 100ml rules applied. Any foodstuff over 100ml may be placed in hold
baggage only.
• Cosmetics/Toiletries – Perfumes, colognes, eau de toilette, liquid make up (such as
foundation, lip gloss, liquid eyeliner, mascara, nail polish), lotions, creams (such as
moisturisers, sun tanning products), toothpaste, deodorants, shaving foams and gels,
hair sprays (aerosols) and gels, must all be placed in a liquid compliance bag. The 100ml
rule is applied. Any cosmetics / toiletries over 100ml may be placed in hold baggage
only.
• Please remember, only 1 liquids compliance bag per person.
As a guide; if you can squeeze it, spray it, spill it, spread it, pour it, pump it or smear it, it
constitutes a Liquid, Gel or Paste.
Walkthrough Metal Detector(WTMD)
• Prior to proceeding through the WTMD, the following steps need to be taken into
consideration:
– Please remove any metallic items from your person including; mobile phones, watches with metal
bands, metal pens, wallets, belts with large metal buckles and large quantities of loose change.
– Have your Crew ID ready for inspection.
– Footwear may be removed and placed in a tray before proceeding through the WTMD. Blue plastic
socks are available on post if so desired to wear.
– Jackets and coats must be removed and placed in a tray for x-ray screening.
• Undertaking all of the above, will assist in progressing through the WTMD in a
smooth and efficient manner. Please note you will be asked for your consent to
search if you alarm the WTMD either as a metallic activation or randomised alarm.
Body Search
• Should the WTMD alarm upon entering through, the security officer will ask for
your consent to be searched.
– Before the search commences your Crew ID card will be visually inspected to ensure it’s validity.
– If consent is given, the security officer will carry out the search at the side of the WTMD following
the Heathrow. Where applicable, the officer may use a hand held metal detector in addition to the
hand search. Please follow the instructions asked by the security officer in ensuring the search is
completed in a compliant and efficient manner.
– As part of search procedures applied to the waistband area, the officer must insert their thumbs
inside of the waistband to complete the search. The officer will inform of this method being applied
prior to it commencing.
– You may request for the security officer to wear disposable gloves.
Please note if consent is not given for a search to be conducted, or is withdrawn during the search,
access will be refused.
Searching in Private
• Private search facilities are available on all control posts. This typically consists of a
room adjacent to the normal screening facilities with no windows and adequate
room to allow a search to be conducted.
• A search in private is available for both body and bag searching purposes and may
be requested by either security or yourself.
• A search in a private facility may be conducted when:
– The person does not wish to be searched in public view, for example on medical grounds, or if they
are carrying high value goods or other items which they do not wish to be seen by others, or for
cultural and religious reasons.
– The security officer believes further investigation is required following completion of the physical
body search process, for example, the security officer feels an item on the person and the person is
unable to reveal the item in public.
– The security officer is unable to satisfactorily resolve a Walk Through Metal Detector (WTMD) or
Hand Held Metal Detector (HHMD) alarm.
Searching in Private
• All persons undergoing a search in private may take a witness, and the security
officer will also take a witness of the same gender.
• In the private search facility, the security officer will explain the process that will
follow and invite the individual to read information contained on a consent form.
Once consent is granted for the search to commence, the form will require a
signature from the individual being searched.
Bag Search
• All cabin and hold baggage will be screened by x-ray.
• Cabin or hold baggage will be subject to a hand search as a result of a concern
raised by the x ray operator, or as a random selection.
• Large electrical items i.e. laptops/i-pads must be removed from cabin baggage and
separated for x-ray screening. If such items are present in hold baggage, they can
remain within the baggage, however, if the item obstructs the x ray operators
image of the bag to the extent that they are not satisfied the bag does not propose
a threat, the bag will be rejected for search.
• Small electrical items of less than 20cm, i.e. kindles or mini I pads are not required
to be removed from cabin baggage.
• Consent to search a person’s bag is always asked for, and the person will be asked
to open the bag. Emptying the contents of the bag is not required, if all of the
contents can be checked within the bag. A tightly packed bag will require the
removal of some of the items. Discretion to searching of personal items will always
be taken into account.
• Please note the CAA Dangerous Goods Regulations limits on aerosols allowed in
Hold Baggage are; 500ml maximum size for each canister. 2000ml maximum in
total per bag. (4 canisters in total).
Our Service
• It is our expectation that crews should be treated with courtesy and respect
throughout the search procedures whether they are compliant or not. When this
does not happen, the first point of contact should be the supervisor on post. If a
supervisor is not present, one should be asked for. If the matter raised is not
amicably resolved, then the issue can be escalated to a duty manager who will
respond when requested to do so.
• It is equally our expectation that crews respect and abide by our security
regulations. When this does not happen, information is noted and shared with
respective station managers. Abusive behaviour is not tolerated and any form of
threat either verbal or physical will, in every instance, require police attendance.
Depending on the severity of the threat, the individual could be barred from using
a control post to gain access and in severe circumstances, access to Heathrow can
be denied.
Our commitment
• For all other issues/enquiries please liaise with the contacts below:
• For Duty Manager support reference delays on post or incidents on the day, please
use the following contact number : 07836380369.
• For information regarding data on non compliance or literature on our security
procedures, please contact Devan Pillai at : devan_pillai@heathrow.com
• For support on any or all security or service related issues which require further investigating
or resolution, please contact Service Manager Irfan Khan at:
Email: Irfan_Khan@heathrow.com
Mobile: 07713075548
It is our intention to get Crews through our search procedures in a safe and efficient manner.
Thank You for your support in ensuring this happens. We look forward to working with you.

Air crew compliance procedures heathrow airport

  • 1. CREW COMPLIANCE PROCEDURES Campus Security These guidelines have been produced to ensure cabin crew are processed smoothly through the control posts in line with the legislated requirements of the EU and the UK Department for Transport.
  • 2. Arriving at the Control Post • When entering a control post all of your personal items/bags must be taken through for screening. You are responsible for your own personal items / bags and therefore cannot take responsibility for another crews members items/bags. Any rubbish must be taken into the control post for disposal in the rubbish bins prior to security screening. • The driver of the vehicle should advance to the front of the queue, irrespective of the crew they are transporting, to minimise the processing time. Once the driver has been screened, they will advance the vehicle to the holding area in order for the screened air crew to re-board. • To minimise congestion, please exit the post as soon as you have recovered your items.
  • 3. Preparing for Security Checks • Once in the control post, ensure that you and your personal belongings are ready for screening. • Every Control post has a liquid compliance bag stand where you can obtain clear sealable bags. – Each liquid item must be in a container of 100ml or less and this, in turn, must fit comfortably into a 1 litre, re sealable, clear plastic bag; referred to as a liquids compliance bag. – Each person is allowed 1 liquids compliance bag. – Essential/ prescription medication is excluded from this allowance and may be carried separately. – Please ensure that the liquids compliance bag is removed from your hand luggage, sealed and presented separately for x-ray screening. – Essential medicines over 100ml in cabin baggage should be carried only in a sufficient amount for your working day and evidence of this need must be provided; for example a letter from your doctor, medical practitioner or a prescription label.
  • 4. Non-Compliant Liquids • Liquid containers found in cabin baggage, that do not have the size clearly marked but are thought to be significantly larger than 100ml, must either be voluntarily abandoned, or, if carrying hold baggage, the liquids are permitted to be placed in hold baggage. • Any loose liquid items under 100ml (except essential medication) which have not been placed in the liquids compliance bag will be placed in a liquids compliant bag, re-screened by x-ray and vapour detection equipment. This may result in a delay. • Please be aware that hold bags containing liquids will be subjected to search if the bag(s) get rejected for search due to concerns identified by the x ray operator or the bag is chosen as a random selection. Any bags screened as “hold bags” cannot be taken into the cabin of the aircraft and the Captain of the flight should assume responsibility for this. Please note; this is a legislative requirement and is subject to inspection by the DfT or EU.
  • 5. Liquids, Gels, Creams and Pastes Explained • Drinks– Bottles (plastic or glass), flasks, cans and cartons of drink must all be 100ml or less if they are carried in cabin baggage. Items greater than 100ml can be carried in hold baggage. • Foodstuffs – Any fluid/liquid food products in packets, tubes, plastic or metal containers including, but not limited to, syrups, jams, sauces, pastes or yoghurts are classified as liquids with the 100ml rules applied. Any foodstuff over 100ml may be placed in hold baggage only. • Cosmetics/Toiletries – Perfumes, colognes, eau de toilette, liquid make up (such as foundation, lip gloss, liquid eyeliner, mascara, nail polish), lotions, creams (such as moisturisers, sun tanning products), toothpaste, deodorants, shaving foams and gels, hair sprays (aerosols) and gels, must all be placed in a liquid compliance bag. The 100ml rule is applied. Any cosmetics / toiletries over 100ml may be placed in hold baggage only. • Please remember, only 1 liquids compliance bag per person. As a guide; if you can squeeze it, spray it, spill it, spread it, pour it, pump it or smear it, it constitutes a Liquid, Gel or Paste.
  • 6. Walkthrough Metal Detector(WTMD) • Prior to proceeding through the WTMD, the following steps need to be taken into consideration: – Please remove any metallic items from your person including; mobile phones, watches with metal bands, metal pens, wallets, belts with large metal buckles and large quantities of loose change. – Have your Crew ID ready for inspection. – Footwear may be removed and placed in a tray before proceeding through the WTMD. Blue plastic socks are available on post if so desired to wear. – Jackets and coats must be removed and placed in a tray for x-ray screening. • Undertaking all of the above, will assist in progressing through the WTMD in a smooth and efficient manner. Please note you will be asked for your consent to search if you alarm the WTMD either as a metallic activation or randomised alarm.
  • 7. Body Search • Should the WTMD alarm upon entering through, the security officer will ask for your consent to be searched. – Before the search commences your Crew ID card will be visually inspected to ensure it’s validity. – If consent is given, the security officer will carry out the search at the side of the WTMD following the Heathrow. Where applicable, the officer may use a hand held metal detector in addition to the hand search. Please follow the instructions asked by the security officer in ensuring the search is completed in a compliant and efficient manner. – As part of search procedures applied to the waistband area, the officer must insert their thumbs inside of the waistband to complete the search. The officer will inform of this method being applied prior to it commencing. – You may request for the security officer to wear disposable gloves. Please note if consent is not given for a search to be conducted, or is withdrawn during the search, access will be refused.
  • 8. Searching in Private • Private search facilities are available on all control posts. This typically consists of a room adjacent to the normal screening facilities with no windows and adequate room to allow a search to be conducted. • A search in private is available for both body and bag searching purposes and may be requested by either security or yourself. • A search in a private facility may be conducted when: – The person does not wish to be searched in public view, for example on medical grounds, or if they are carrying high value goods or other items which they do not wish to be seen by others, or for cultural and religious reasons. – The security officer believes further investigation is required following completion of the physical body search process, for example, the security officer feels an item on the person and the person is unable to reveal the item in public. – The security officer is unable to satisfactorily resolve a Walk Through Metal Detector (WTMD) or Hand Held Metal Detector (HHMD) alarm.
  • 9. Searching in Private • All persons undergoing a search in private may take a witness, and the security officer will also take a witness of the same gender. • In the private search facility, the security officer will explain the process that will follow and invite the individual to read information contained on a consent form. Once consent is granted for the search to commence, the form will require a signature from the individual being searched.
  • 10. Bag Search • All cabin and hold baggage will be screened by x-ray. • Cabin or hold baggage will be subject to a hand search as a result of a concern raised by the x ray operator, or as a random selection. • Large electrical items i.e. laptops/i-pads must be removed from cabin baggage and separated for x-ray screening. If such items are present in hold baggage, they can remain within the baggage, however, if the item obstructs the x ray operators image of the bag to the extent that they are not satisfied the bag does not propose a threat, the bag will be rejected for search. • Small electrical items of less than 20cm, i.e. kindles or mini I pads are not required to be removed from cabin baggage. • Consent to search a person’s bag is always asked for, and the person will be asked to open the bag. Emptying the contents of the bag is not required, if all of the contents can be checked within the bag. A tightly packed bag will require the removal of some of the items. Discretion to searching of personal items will always be taken into account. • Please note the CAA Dangerous Goods Regulations limits on aerosols allowed in Hold Baggage are; 500ml maximum size for each canister. 2000ml maximum in total per bag. (4 canisters in total).
  • 11. Our Service • It is our expectation that crews should be treated with courtesy and respect throughout the search procedures whether they are compliant or not. When this does not happen, the first point of contact should be the supervisor on post. If a supervisor is not present, one should be asked for. If the matter raised is not amicably resolved, then the issue can be escalated to a duty manager who will respond when requested to do so. • It is equally our expectation that crews respect and abide by our security regulations. When this does not happen, information is noted and shared with respective station managers. Abusive behaviour is not tolerated and any form of threat either verbal or physical will, in every instance, require police attendance. Depending on the severity of the threat, the individual could be barred from using a control post to gain access and in severe circumstances, access to Heathrow can be denied.
