Reflection on ESOL Modifications, specifically performance standard 4:I made a connection between my learning opportunity and ESOL performance standard 4, “Use knowledge of the cultural characteristics of Florida’s LEP population to enhance instruction.” Before beginning to interact with the puppeteers, we used our first day to observe how they interacted with each other and how Coach John interacted with them as well. Without witnessing this interaction beforehand, I am not sure how we would have communicated with the puppeteers. In planning out our lessons and methods, without the observation our methods would not have been productive. After having this opportunity I know that when working with ESOL students the methods and strategies that I will incorporate in my lessons will benefit all of my students. From this experience I know that even though I may have students that have the same speak the same language or have a similar learning disability, they may come from very different cultures. To assume that these students will be able to communicate and learn in the same way is not likely.Reflection on ESOL Modifications, specifically performance standards 12:ESOL performance standard 12, “apply content-based ESOL approaches to instruction,” helps every child in the classroom, including the ESE child. When we were planning out our lessons and methods, we incorporated many different strategies to help instruct the puppeteers. We used music, pictures, visuals, hands-on activities, and hand gestures to name a few. Though many of the puppeteers were not able to fully communicate in using the different ESOL modifications we were able to communicate and understand each other, which I found remarkable.
