What is Design?

• An electronic system using computers for
designing new parts or products or for
modifying existing ones.
• Computer-aided design (CAD) is the use of
computer systems to assist in the creation,
modification, analysis, or optimization of a
design.

4. Introduction of CAD
• CAD consit’s of a powerful desktop computer
and graphics software that enables designer
to manipulate geometric shapes.
• It replaces the traditional drafting work done
by a draftsman on a drafting board.

5. Advantages of CAD
• Saves time and money.
• Eliminates prototype model building to prove the designs.
• Allows designers to determine costs and test such variables as
stress, tolerance, product variability, interchangeability and
serviceability.
• Low cost of design.
• Eliminates manual drafting completely.
• Easy to manipulate.
• Makes review of numerous options in designs possible before
final commitments are made.
• Faster development, better products and accurate flow of
information to other departments.
• Product cost can be determined at the design stage itself.

6. CAM
• Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) is the
use of computer systems to plan, manage, and
control the operations of a manufacturing
plant through direct or indirect computer
interface with plant’s resources.
• When CAD information is translated into
instructions for CAM the result of these two
technologies is referred to as CAD/CAM
system.

• AutoCAD (CAD)
– Computer Aided Design or Computer Aided Drafting

– But now it has solid modeling and 3D tools
– Has supported custom objects through its C++ API

customization and automation
