Using New Media and SNS

 Even though image and multimedia are becoming
increasingly prevalent, text still dominates especially in
educational setting and academia. It is rare to see a
theoretical piece in any form other than a traditional
print paper. Even with attempts to incorporate new
technologies and literacies in classes, as teachers we
fail to employ these literacies in novel ways .

 Rather, we take an already existing genre and require
the content to be presented with the new technology as
its form rather than seeing the new technology as a
new literacy or genre in itself. For example, when
presenting with PowerPoint software we rely mostly on
  text formatted in point form.
Using New Media and SNS

 In the attempt to stay current, educators are beginning to
incorporate social media tools more frequently in their
  classes.

 Blogs and SNS’s are being used more regularly to encourage
curriculum based discourse outside of classroom walls or in
  the class.

 we are approaching these SNS’s and blogs in the same
manner as carefree methods. I mean, we now encourage our
students or we students to provide more conversational text
that is the norm with social media, and the inclusion of
visuals and multimedia is almost existing widely in the
  modern school or institutions.
Educational Institution and Using SNS

 We have already become members of 'Facebook' or another
Internet network. These kinds of interactive web-based
networks are called Social Networking Services (SNS). SNS
focuses on the building of online social networks that enable us
to share interests and activities and/or find others who are
interested in exploring similar interests and activities.

 SNS provides various ways for members to interact, such as
email/messaging, chatting, video chatting, voice chatting, file
sharing (sharing pictures, video and music files), blogging
(writing a personal diary), forum/discussion groups etc.

 In our class, we usually run our course through Facebook as
tool of SNS and sharing an advanced multicultural discourse.
When we attempt the class, we feel free from a burden of
traditional throat-telling method and this new method crafts us
to the new smart techno-educational system.
Educational Institution and Using SNS

 Using SNS, in class room, especially Facebook is significant
for us due to the several reasons:
(i) easy to submit our homework (ii) it makes us 'Collective
intelligence‘ among the various knowledge (iii) 'social
constructionism', which is one of the mainstays of learning
lecture from the professor, in this learning, we do not only
receive information, but learn actively through the process of
exchanging ideas with each other or the process of
participating in a social and cultural activity (iv) this style has
not given a chance to participate in social activities on the web.
But also I think, it enables us to interact and learn by
participating in activities on the web, so it has the potential to
be an educational resource. In order to maximize the benefit of
using this idea as a resource, we need to be actively involved
in the multiple mind, and not just observing or gathering
information but also teaching something to others.
Using SNS in Everyday Life

 Society exists in a digital age, where everything in our lives is
spread out across as much media as possible and this media is
shaped by everyone. In my personal case in Korea (though I m low-
tech chap) it is a part of my everyday life and i do the same in the
internet as in real life, probably in a more efficient, faster and
  cheaper way.

 On the other hand, communication using the internet as a channel
is becoming increasingly popular. One of them, (SNS) such as
Facebook with the proliferation comes to me giving an impact on
everyday life as an understanding in what people do and how they
  do with me.

 SNS also offer the chance of communication in cases where mobility
is often a hindrance to social interaction.

 Sometime when I feel I m helplessness to do something that SNS
makes me able to stay in touch with existing relations and friends,
as well as get in touch with people who have similar issues and they
  eventually help me.
Using SNS in Everyday Life

 I saw in society, SNS can provides a unique, convenient
communication tool that does not require speaking verbally and
as such may empower some people with hearing loss, it helps to
level the doing something. This is also the case with people who
have psychological disorders who may also have limited mobility.

 Personally for me, extra benefit to communicating through SNS
is the promotion of education and news. I can share information
via links, reviews and applications or seeking some information
for education, updates of news or support something.

 I can enjoy educational opportunities where lesson topics,
research, creative ideas, and interactive discussions are at our
  fingertips.

 Finally, I could be listed in technological skills as the top lesson,
followed by creativity, being open to new or diverse views and
  communication skills through the SNS.
If I were an Instructor or a Professor……

 I could encourage students to explore the common SNS site freely
and to become an active participant in the communication by
reading and posting messages or homework and even they could
keep some comments or suggestions on other's essays and
interesting topics in a different way.

 I may introduce our site activities which helps students to read
our online or SNS course, especially from Facebook and even I
may expect some of the constructive comments from my student.

 I hope from my teaching methods, students will be able to:

 Read and respond to personal profiles and comments.
 Develop their own profiles and self-introductions with a real
  purpose.
 Develop inter-cultural awareness by interacting in a global
  community and global culture.
 Access technological ides, attitudes and values in multiple culture.
