       The Great American Cleanup
            March 3rd Kick Off
The Great American Cleanup started with a Kick Off on
March 3rd at Melton Lake Park where a tent was set up to
hand out t-shirts, water bottles and other fun
environmental material. Several volunteers grabbed a trash
grabber and orange vest to help clean up the park. Students
from Oak Ridge High School's environmental club the Eco-
Cats and student volunteers from the high school "Key
Club" organized a cleanup on Emory Valley Trail and Emory
Valley Greenway. The group was led by teachers,
 DeniSobek and Beth Adler.

5th Annual Earth Day was a
               Huge SuccessfulCelebration
We thank the citizens and the businesses, the City of Oak Ridge, and city council for their support of
the 5th Annual 2012 Earth Day festival. It has always been our goal to be an event that the
community enjoys but that also gives back substantially. It included over 60 exhibitors covering
diverse topics including alternative energy, native plants, fitness and outdoor activities, general
wellness, and more. Of the 371 pounds of festival waste generated, 72% was either recycled or
composted. Events included: Dock Dogs Spare the Big Air Challenge, a competition of dogs diving
and retrieving in a huge pool. Erase Your Trace Recycling Extravaganza that provided a drop off
point for numerous reusable, recyclable, or difficult to dispose of items. The Green Mile was a free
kid’s one-mile foot race open to all area school-age children and designed to encourage kids to get
active. A children’s scavenger hunt was an educational and active event. Trashformations was a
kid’s art exhibit working with students and teachers from area schools to present a creative exhibit
of art using trash. The Bike Rodeo educated children on bike safety. Soles4Souls Used Shoe
collected almost 5,000 pairs of gently used shoes to benefit those in need. Earth Day is brought to
the community by the following dedicated organizations: Keep Anderson County Beautiful, SAIC,
Children's Museum of Oak Ridge, Anderson County Health Department, Anderson County Solid
Waste Management, Oak Ridge City Schools and the Coordinated Health Program, Oak Ridge
Universalist Unitarian Church, EQAB and First United Methodist Church, as well as several
individuals.

  • 2. KEEP ANDERSON COUNTY BEAUTIFUL SUMMER 2012 5th Annual Earth Day was a Huge SuccessfulCelebration We thank the citizens and the businesses, the City of Oak Ridge, and city council for their support of the 5th Annual 2012 Earth Day festival. It has always been our goal to be an event that the community enjoys but that also gives back substantially. It included over 60 exhibitors covering diverse topics including alternative energy, native plants, fitness and outdoor activities, general wellness, and more. Of the 371 pounds of festival waste generated, 72% was either recycled or composted. Events included: Dock Dogs Spare the Big Air Challenge, a competition of dogs diving and retrieving in a huge pool. Erase Your Trace Recycling Extravaganza that provided a drop off point for numerous reusable, recyclable, or difficult to dispose of items. The Green Mile was a free kid’s one-mile foot race open to all area school-age children and designed to encourage kids to get active. A children’s scavenger hunt was an educational and active event. Trashformations was a kid’s art exhibit working with students and teachers from area schools to present a creative exhibit of art using trash. The Bike Rodeo educated children on bike safety. Soles4Souls Used Shoe collected almost 5,000 pairs of gently used shoes to benefit those in need. Earth Day is brought to the community by the following dedicated organizations: Keep Anderson County Beautiful, SAIC, Children's Museum of Oak Ridge, Anderson County Health Department, Anderson County Solid Waste Management, Oak Ridge City Schools and the Coordinated Health Program, Oak Ridge Universalist Unitarian Church, EQAB and First United Methodist Church, as well as several individuals.
